Do Funerals Matter? The Purposes and Practices of Death Rituals in Global Perspective (Book Review)
Reviews the book, Do Funerals Matter? The Purposes and Practices of DeathRituals in Global Perspective by William G. Hoy (see record 2013-10676-000). The purpose of this book, “is to assist in acknowledging the need for those [funeral] rites and understanding them” (p. 3). In the 10 chapters in this 208-page text, Hoy examines such topics as funeral practice history, common symbols, value of community, rituals and heritage, inclusion of the physical body in ceremonies, trends in funeral practices and businesses, and clinical values of funeral practices. Hoy’s book offers a brief history of funeral rituals and traditions, with greatest emphasis on the last 100 years. This survey of history and practice is clearly not comprehensive, yet it provides enough breadth of the various funeral expressions to effectively illustrate the book’s stated requirement for practitioners to be aware of diverse practices and needs of those dealing with death. This book is a valuable introduction for students going into the helping fields, for educators in helping fields, and for clinicians working with those dealing with death and funeral issues. The benefits will be especially valuable for clinical counselors and psychologists, hospice workers, chaplains, and spiritual counselors. Do funerals matter? Yes, and providers of all kinds will be better equipped to help their populations with this relevant resource from Hoy
The Legends of Saint Augustine of Canterbury: The Myth Illuminates the Man
At the behest of Pope Gregory the Great (c. 540- 604), Augustine (later called Augustine of Canterbury) embarked on a mission that would end with Britain reentering the Christian fold. Most historical records record Augustine\u27s deeds, but say little directly his character or his personality. This paper examines some indirect inferences we can gather from legends and traditions, in the hope of producing a better understanding of Augustine the man, that we might properly understand his deeds in the context of a living, breathing person. The paper also explores the plausibility of these legends

Explorations between philosophy and history
This introduction summarizes the basic ideas behind the articles collected in Przekraczanie granic: eseje z filozofii historii i teorii historiografii [Bordercrossings: essays on the philosophy of history and theory of historiography]. The first basic idea is the idea that the writing of history has a “border crossing” character, meaning that history writing involves border crossings, first, between history and philosophy and, second, between history and “politics” in a broad sense. The second basic idea is that the dialectical mechanism of “inversion” (of “negation” and of “the unity of opposites”) is fundamental for our understanding of debates in the philosophy of history and in historiography. The third idea is that interesting prejudices and other assumptions in both philosophy and in history are found by contrast, not by analysis (Feyerabend). Analysis of controversies is therefore the most fruitful point of departure in the philosophy of history and in historiography. Because all key ideas in the humanities are “essentially contested concepts” (Gallie), controversies are the “normal” discursive condition in the humanities

The bare bones of social commentary in Kathy Reichs' fiction
Detective fiction has popularly been considered a light form of literary entertainment. However, many of this genre’s practitioners underline the way that their novels engage with contemporary social issues, as a close reading of the texts may reveal. Kathy Reichs’ fiction is no exception. In this sense, her Brennan series may be analysed as prompting the reader to set out on a journey of discovery in different ways. This article argues that content and form work hand in hand at the service of Kathy Reichs’ social feminist agenda and that just as the many times bare bones found at the crime scene point to both the victim’s and criminal’s identity, they eventually become suggestive of how our contemporary society works. Blurring the difference between fact and fiction, Kathy Reichs’ forensic detective novels expose the bare bones of an array of current societal miseries and appeal to the reader’s complicity for the need of social change.
