    Monitoring distributed systems with distributed polyLarva

    polyLarva is a language-agnostic runtime verification tool, which converts a polyLarvaScript into a monitor for a given system. While an implementation for polyLarva exists, the language and its compilation have not been formalised. We therefore present a formal implementation-independent model which describes the behaviour of polyLarvaScript, comprising of the uLarvaScript grammar and of a set of operational semantics. This allows us to prove important properties, such as determinism, and also enables us to reason about ways of re-designing the tool in a more scalable way. We also present a collection of denotational mappings for uLarvaScript converting the constructs of our grammar into constructs of a formal actor-based model, thus providing an Actor semantics for uLarvaScript. We are also able to prove certain correctness properties of the denotational translation such as that the denoted Actors behave in a way which corresponds to the behaviour described by our implementation-independent model. We finally present distPolyLarva, a prototype implementation of the distributed polyLarva tool, which implements the new actor-based semantics over a language that can natively handle distribution and concurrency called Erlang.peer-reviewe

    Higher levels of process synchronisation

    Four new synchronisation primitives (SEMAPHOREs, RESOURCEs, EVENTs and BUCKETs) were introduced in the KRoC 0.8beta release of occam for SPARC (SunOS/Solaris) and Alpha (OSF/1) UNIX workstations [1][2][3]. This paper reports on the rationale, application and implementation of two of these (SEMAPHOREs and EVENTs). Details on the other two may be found on the web [4]. The new primitives are designed to support higher-level mechanisms of SHARING between parallel processes and give us greater powers of expression. They will also let greater levels of concurrency be safely exploited from future parallel architectures, such as those providing (virtual) shared-memory. They demonstrate that occam is neutral in any debate between the merits of message-passing versus shared-memory parallelism, enabling applications to take advantage of whichever paradigm (or mixture of paradigms) is the most appropriate. The new primitives could be (but are not) implemented in terms of traditional channels, but only at the expense of increased complexity and computational overhead. The primitives are immediately useful even for uni-processors - for example, the cost of a fair ALT can be reduced from O(n) to O(1). In fact, all the operations associated with new primitives have constant space and time complexities; and the constants are very low. The KRoC release provides an Abstract Data Type interface to the primitives. However, direct use of such mechanisms still allows the user to misuse them. They must be used in the ways prescribed (in this paper and in [4]) else their semantics become unpredictable. No tool is provided to check correct usage at this level. The intention is to bind those primitives found to be useful into higher level versions of occam. Some of the primitives (e.g. SEMAPHOREs) may never themselves be made visible in the language, but may be used to implement bindings of higher-level paradigms (such as SHARED channels and BLACKBOARDs). The compiler will perform the relevant usage checking on all new language bindings, closing the security loopholes opened by raw use of the primitives.     Embedding object-oriented design in system engineering

    The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a collection of techniques intended to document design decisions about software. This contrasts with systems engineering approaches such as for exampleStatemate and the Yourdon Systems Method (YSM), in which the design of an entire system consisting of software and hardware can be documented. The difference between the system- and the software level is reflected in differences between execution semantics as well as in methodology. In this paper, I show how the UML can be used as a system-level design technique. I give a conceptual framework for engineering design that accommodates the system- as well as the software level and show how techniques from the UML and YSM can be classified within this framework, and how this allows a coherent use of these techniques in a system engineering approach. These ideas are illustrated by a case study in which software for a compact dynamic bus station is designed. Finally, I discuss the consequences of this approach for a semantics of UML constructs that would be appropriate for system-level design

    Adding superimposition to a language semantics

    Given the denotational semantics of a programming language, we describe a general method to extend the language in a way that it supports a form of emph{superimposition}~---~just in the sense of aspect-oriented programming. In the extended language, the programmer can superimpose additional or alternative functionality (aka advice) onto points along the execution of a program. Adding superimposition to a language semantics comes down to three steps: (i) the semantic functions are elaborated to carry advice; (ii) the semantic equations are turned into `reflective' style so that they can be altered at will; (iii) a construct for binding advice is integrated. We illustrate the approach by representing semantics definitions as interpreters in Haskell

    Statically checking confidentiality via dynamic labels

    This paper presents a new approach for verifying confidentiality for programs, based on abstract interpretation. The framework is formally developed and proved correct in the theorem prover PVS. We use dynamic labeling functions to abstractly interpret a simple programming language via modification of security levels of variables. Our approach is sound and compositional and results in an algorithm for statically checking confidentiality

Here I examine these differences, and suggest that certain forms of unconventional computation are needed to model physical processes and complex systems.     Modular language processors as framework completions

    Journal ArticleThe conceptual and specificational power of denotational semantics for programming language design has been amply demonstrated. We report here on a language implementation method that is similarly semantically motivated, but is based upon object-oriented design principles, and results in flexible and evolvable language processors. We apply this technique to the area of object-oriented (O-O) languages, in the form of a general metalevel architecture for objects and inheritance that facilitates the development of compilers and interpreters for 0-0 languages. This development strategy maintains architectural modularity by mapping conceptual language design decisions to isolatable parts of resulting language processors. Our architecture, which is presented as an OO framework, is characterized by (i) support for a broad set of modularity features including encapsulation and strong typing, and (ii) an "unbundled" view of inheritance, semantic features of which are decomposed by means of a set of module combination operations (combinators). We describe an implementation of our framework in C++, and assess its utility by constructing a compiler for a simple 0 - 0 extension to the programming language C. We further argue the flexibility of the resulting processor by outlining the incorporation of several significant extensions to the basic module language. We claim that the use of such a framework for compiler construction has many advantages, including a systematic language development method, processor software reuse, language extensibility, and potential for interoperability among languages.
