    An empirical evaluation of techniques for parallel simulation of message passing networks

    209 p.[EN]In the field of computer design, simulation is an essential tool to validate and evaluate architectural proposals. Conventional simulation techniques, designed for their use in sequential computers, are too slow if the system to simulate is large or complex. The aim of this work is to search for techniques to accelerate simulations exploiting the parallelism available in current, commercial multicomputers, and to use these techniques to study a model of a message router. This router has been designed to constitute the communication infrastructure of a (hypothetical) massively parallel computer. Three parallel simulation techniques have been considered: synchronous, asynchronous-conservative and asynchronous-optimistic. These algorithms have been implemented in three multicomputers: a transputer-based Supernode, an Intel Paragon and a network of workstations. The influence that factors such as the characteristics of the simulated models, the organization of the simulators and the characteristics of the target multicomputers have in the performance of the simulations has been measured and characterized. It is concluded that optimistic parallel simulation techniques are not suitable for the considered kind of models, although they may provide good performance in other environments. A network of workstations is not the right platform for our experiments, because the communication demands of the parallel simulators surpass the abilities of local area networks—the granularity is too fine. Synchronous and conservative parallel simulation techniques perform very well in the Supernode and in the Paragon, specially if the model to simulate is complex or large—precisely the worst case for traditional, sequential simulators. This way, studies previously considered as unrealizable, due to their exceedingly high computational cost, can be performed in reasonable times. Las ténicas convencionales de simulación, diseñadas para su utilización en computadores secuenciales, son demasiado lentas si el sistema a simular es grande o complejo. El objetivo de esta tesis es buscar técnicas para acelerar estas simulaciones, aprovechando el paralelismo disponible en multicomputadores comerciales, y usar esas técnicas para el estudio de un modelo de encaminador de mensajes. Este encaminador está diseñado para formar infraestructura de comunicaciones de un hipotético computador masivamente paralelo. En este trabajo se consideran tres técnicas de simulación paralela: síncrona, asíncrona-conservadora y asíncrona-optimista. Estos algoritmos se han implementado en tres multicomputadores: un Supernode basado en Transputers, un Intel Paragon y una red de estaciones de trabajo. Se caracteriza la influencia que tienen en las prestaciones de los simuladores aspectos tales como los parámetros del modelo simulado, la organización del simulador y las características del multicomputador utilizado. Se concluye que las técnicas de simulación paralela optimista no resultan adecuadas para trabajar con el modelo considerado, aunque pueden ofrecer un buen rendimiento en otros entornos. La red de estaciones de trabajo no resulta una plataforma apropiada para estas simulaciones, ya que una red local no reúne condiciones para la ejecución de aplicaciones paralelas de grano fino. Las técnicas de simulación paralela síncrona y conservadora dan muy buenos resultados en el Supernode y en el Paragon, especialmente si el modelo a simular es complejo o grande—precisamente el peor caso para los algoritmos secuenciales. De esta forma, estudios previamente considerados inviables, por ser demasiado costosos computacionalmente, pueden realizarse en tiempos razonables.     Compilation techniques for multicomputers

    This thesis considers problems in process and data partitioning when compiling programs for distributed-memory parallel computers (or multicomputers). These partitions may be specified by the user through the use of language constructs, or automatically determined by the compiler. Data and process partitioning techniques are developed for two models of compilation. The first compilation model focusses on the loop nests present in a serial program. Executing the iterations of these loop nests in parallel accounts for a significant amount of the parallelism which can be exploited in these programs. The parallelism is exploited by applying a set of transformations to the loop nests. The iterations of the transformed loop nests are in a form which can be readily distributed amongst the processors of a multicomputer. The manner in which the arrays, referenced within these loop nests, are partitioned between the processors is determined by the distribution of the loop iterations. The second compilation model is based on the data parallel paradigm, in which operations are applied to many different data items collectively. High Performance Fortran is used as an example of this paradigm. Novel collective communication routines are developed, and are applied to provide the communication associated with the data partitions for both compilation models. Furthermore, it is shown that by using these routines the communication associated with partitioning data on a multicomputer is greatly simplified. These routines are developed as part of this thesis. The experimental context for this thesis is the development of a compiler for the Fujitsu AP1000 multicomputer. A prototype compiler is presented.     On Extracting Course-Grained Function Parallelism from C Programs

    To efficiently utilize the emerging heterogeneous multi-core architecture, it is essential to exploit the inherent coarse-grained parallelism in applications. In addition to data parallelism, applications like telecommunication, multimedia, and gaming can also benefit from the exploitation of coarse-grained function parallelism. To exploit coarse-grained function parallelism, the common wisdom is to rely on programmers to explicitly express the coarse-grained data-flow between coarse-grained functions using data-flow or streaming languages. This research is set to explore another approach to exploiting coarse-grained function parallelism, that is to rely on compiler to extract coarse-grained data-flow from imperative programs. We believe imperative languages and the von Neumann programming model will still be the dominating programming languages programming model in the future. This dissertation discusses the design and implementation of a memory data-flow analysis system which extracts coarse-grained data-flow from C programs. The memory data-flow analysis system partitions a C program into a hierarchy of program regions. It then traverses the program region hierarchy from bottom up, summarizing the exposed memory access patterns for each program region, meanwhile deriving a conservative producer-consumer relations between program regions. An ensuing top-down traversal of the program region hierarchy will refine the producer-consumer relations by pruning spurious relations. We built an in-lining based prototype of the memory data-flow analysis system on top of the IMPACT compiler infrastructure. We applied the prototype to analyze the memory data-flow of several MediaBench programs. The experiment results showed that while the prototype performed reasonably well for the tested programs, the in-lining based implementation may not efficient for larger programs. Also, there is still room in improving the effectiveness of the memory data-flow analysis system. We did root cause analysis for the inaccuracy in the memory data-flow analysis results, which provided us insights on how to improve the memory data-flow analysis system in the future

    Exploiting parallelism in n-D convex hull algorithms

    PhD ThesisThe convex hull is a problem of primary importance because of its applications in computational geometry. A number of sequential and parallel algorithms for computing the convex hull of a finite set of points in the lower dimensions are known. In compar- ison, the general n-D problem is not as well understood and parallel algorithms are not so prevalent because the 2-D and 3-D methods are not easily extended to the general case. This thesis presents parallel algorithms for evaluating the general n- D convex hull problem (where 2-D and 3-D are special cases) using Swart's sequential algorithm. One of our methods combines a gift-wrapping technique with partitioning and merge algorithms > where the original list is split into p 1 partitions followed by the computation of the subhulls using the sequential n-D gift-wrapping method. The partial hulls are then combined using a fanin tree. The second method computes the convex hull in parallel by wrapping around the edges until a complete facial lattice structure of the polytope is generated. Several parameterised versions of the proposed algorithms have been implemented on the shared memory and message passing architectures. In the former, performance on an Encore Multimax using Encore Parallel Threads and the more lightweight Microthread programming utilities are examined. In the latter, performance on a transputer based machine using CS- Tools is discussed.     A design methodology for portable software on parallel computers

    This final report for research that was supported by grant number NAG-1-995 documents our progress in addressing two difficulties in parallel programming. The first difficulty is developing software that will execute quickly on a parallel computer. The second difficulty is transporting software between dissimilar parallel computers. In general, we expect that more hardware-specific information will be included in software designs for parallel computers than in designs for sequential computers. This inclusion is an instance of portability being sacrificed for high performance. New parallel computers are being introduced frequently. Trying to keep one's software on the current high performance hardware, a software developer almost continually faces yet another expensive software transportation. The problem of the proposed research is to create a design methodology that helps designers to more precisely control both portability and hardware-specific programming details. The proposed research emphasizes programming for scientific applications. We completed our study of the parallelizability of a subsystem of the NASA Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) data processing system. This work is summarized in section two. A more detailed description is provided in Appendix A ('Programming Practices to Support Eventual Parallelism'). Mr. Chrisman, a graduate student, wrote and successfully defended a Ph.D. dissertation proposal which describes our research associated with the issues of software portability and high performance. The list of research tasks are specified in the proposal. The proposal 'A Design Methodology for Portable Software on Parallel Computers' is summarized in section three and is provided in its entirety in Appendix B. We are currently studying a proposed subsystem of the NASA Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data processing system. This software is the proof-of-concept for the Ph.D. dissertation. We have implemented and measured the performance of a portion of this subsystem on the Intel iPSC/2 parallel computer. These results are provided in section four. Our future work is summarized in section five, our acknowledgements are stated in section six, and references for published papers associated with NAG-1-995 are provided in section seven

    Automatic visual recognition using parallel machines

    Invariant features and quick matching algorithms are two major concerns in the area of automatic visual recognition. The former reduces the size of an established model database, and the latter shortens the computation time. This dissertation, will discussed both line invariants under perspective projection and parallel implementation of a dynamic programming technique for shape recognition. The feasibility of using parallel machines can be demonstrated through the dramatically reduced time complexity. In this dissertation, our algorithms are implemented on the AP1000 MIMD parallel machines. For processing an object with a features, the time complexity of the proposed parallel algorithm is O(n), while that of a uniprocessor is O(n2). The two applications, one for shape matching and the other for chain-code extraction, are used in order to demonstrate the usefulness of our methods. Invariants from four general lines under perspective projection are also discussed in here. In contrast to the approach which uses the epipolar geometry, we investigate the invariants under isotropy subgroups. Theoretically speaking, two independent invariants can be found for four general lines in 3D space. In practice, we show how to obtain these two invariants from the projective images of four general lines without the need of camera calibration. A projective invariant recognition system based on a hypothesis-generation-testing scheme is run on the hypercube parallel architecture. Object recognition is achieved by matching the scene projective invariants to the model projective invariants, called transfer. Then a hypothesis-generation-testing scheme is implemented on the hypercube parallel architecture

    Directions in parallel programming: HPF, shared virtual memory and object parallelism in pC++

    Fortran and C++ are the dominant programming languages used in scientific computation. Consequently, extensions to these languages are the most popular for programming massively parallel computers. We discuss two such approaches to parallel Fortran and one approach to C++. The High Performance Fortran Forum has designed HPF with the intent of supporting data parallelism on Fortran 90 applications. HPF works by asking the user to help the compiler distribute and align the data structures with the distributed memory modules in the system. Fortran-S takes a different approach in which the data distribution is managed by the operating system and the user provides annotations to indicate parallel control regions. In the case of C++, we look at pC++ which is based on a concurrent aggregate parallel model

    Limits to parallelism in scientific computing

    The goal of our research is to decrease the execution time of scientific computing applications. We exploit the application\u27s inherent parallelism to achieve this goal. This exploitation is expensive as we analyze sequential applications and port them to parallel computers. Many scientifically computational problems appear to have considerable exploitable parallelism; however, upon implementing a parallel solution on a parallel computer, limits to the parallelism are encountered. Unfortunately, many of these limits are characteristic of a specific parallel computer. This thesis explores these limits.;We study the feasibility of exploiting the inherent parallelism of four NASA scientific computing applications. We use simple models to predict each application\u27s degree of parallelism at several levels of granularity. From this analysis, we conclude that it is infeasible to exploit the inherent parallelism of two of the four applications. The interprocessor communication of one application is too expensive relative to its computation cost. The input and output costs of the other application are too expensive relative to its computation cost. We exploit the parallelism of the remaining two applications and measure their performance on an Intel iPSC/2 parallel computer. We parallelize an Optimal Control Boundary Value Problem. This guidance control problem determines an optimal trajectory of a boat in a river. We parallelize the Carbon Dioxide Slicing technique which is a macrophysical cloud property retrieval algorithm. This technique computes the height at the top of a cloud using cloud imager measurements. We consider the feasibility of exploiting its massive parallelism on a MasPar MP-2 parallel computer. We conclude that many limits to parallelism are surmountable while other limits are inescapable.;From these limits, we elucidate some fundamental issues that must be considered when porting similar problems to yet-to-be designed computers. We conclude that the technological improvements to reduce the isolation of computational units frees a programmer from many of the programmer\u27s current concerns about the granularity of the work. We also conclude that the technological improvements to relax the regimented guidance of the computational units allows a programmer to exploit the inherent heterogeneous parallelism of many applications
