    Reconfigurable FPGA Architecture for Computer Vision Applications in Smart Camera Networks

    Smart Camera Networks (SCNs) is nowadays an emerging research field which represents the natural evolution of centralized computer vision applications towards full distributed and pervasive systems. In this vision, one of the biggest effort is in the definition of a flexible and reconfigurable SCN node architecture able to remotely update the application parameter and the performed computer vision application at run­time. In this respect, we present a novel SCN node architecture based on a device in which a microcontroller manage all the network functionality as well as the remote configuration, while an FPGA implements all the necessary module of a full computer vision pipeline. In this work the envisioned architecture is first detailed in general terms, then a real implementation is presented to show the feasibility and the benefits of the proposed solution. Finally, performance evaluation results underline the potential of an hardware software codesign approach in reaching flexibility and reduced processing time

    FPGA-based smart camera mote for pervasive wireless network

    International audienceSmart camera networks raise challenging issues in many fields of research, including vision processing, communication protocols, distributed algorithms or power management. The ever increasing resolution of image sensors entails huge amounts of data, far exceeding the bandwidth of current networks and thus forcing smart camera nodes to process raw data into useful information. Consequently, on-board processing has become a key issue for the expansion of such networked systems. In this context, FPGA-based platforms, supporting massive, fine grain data parallelism, offer large opportunities. Besides, the concept of a middleware, providing services for networking, data transfer, dynamic loading or hardware abstraction, has emerged as a means of harnessing the hardware and software complexity of smart camera nodes. In this paper, we prospect the development of a new kind of smart cameras, wherein FPGAs provide high performance processing and general purpose processors support middleware services. In this approach, FPGA devices can be reconfigured at run-time through the network both from explicit user request and transparent middleware decision. An embedded real-time operating system is in charge of the communication layer, and thus can autonomously decide to use a part of the FPGA as an available processing resource. The classical programmability issue, a significant obstacle when dealing with FPGAs, is addressed by resorting to a domain specific high-level programming language (CAPH) for describing operations to be implemented on FPGAs

    Enhancing Real-time Embedded Image Processing Robustness on Reconfigurable Devices for Critical Applications

    Nowadays, image processing is increasingly used in several application fields, such as biomedical, aerospace, or automotive. Within these fields, image processing is used to serve both non-critical and critical tasks. As example, in automotive, cameras are becoming key sensors in increasing car safety, driving assistance and driving comfort. They have been employed for infotainment (non-critical), as well as for some driver assistance tasks (critical), such as Forward Collision Avoidance, Intelligent Speed Control, or Pedestrian Detection. The complexity of these algorithms brings a challenge in real-time image processing systems, requiring high computing capacity, usually not available in processors for embedded systems. Hardware acceleration is therefore crucial, and devices such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) best fit the growing demand of computational capabilities. These devices can assist embedded processors by significantly speeding-up computationally intensive software algorithms. Moreover, critical applications introduce strict requirements not only from the real-time constraints, but also from the device reliability and algorithm robustness points of view. Technology scaling is highlighting reliability problems related to aging phenomena, and to the increasing sensitivity of digital devices to external radiation events that can cause transient or even permanent faults. These faults can lead to wrong information processed or, in the worst case, to a dangerous system failure. In this context, the reconfigurable nature of FPGA devices can be exploited to increase the system reliability and robustness by leveraging Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration features. The research work presented in this thesis focuses on the development of techniques for implementing efficient and robust real-time embedded image processing hardware accelerators and systems for mission-critical applications. Three main challenges have been faced and will be discussed, along with proposed solutions, throughout the thesis: (i) achieving real-time performances, (ii) enhancing algorithm robustness, and (iii) increasing overall system's dependability. In order to ensure real-time performances, efficient FPGA-based hardware accelerators implementing selected image processing algorithms have been developed. Functionalities offered by the target technology, and algorithm's characteristics have been constantly taken into account while designing such accelerators, in order to efficiently tailor algorithm's operations to available hardware resources. On the other hand, the key idea for increasing image processing algorithms' robustness is to introduce self-adaptivity features at algorithm level, in order to maintain constant, or improve, the quality of results for a wide range of input conditions, that are not always fully predictable at design-time (e.g., noise level variations). This has been accomplished by measuring at run-time some characteristics of the input images, and then tuning the algorithm parameters based on such estimations. Dynamic reconfiguration features of modern reconfigurable FPGA have been extensively exploited in order to integrate run-time adaptivity into the designed hardware accelerators. Tools and methodologies have been also developed in order to increase the overall system dependability during reconfiguration processes, thus providing safe run-time adaptation mechanisms. In addition, taking into account the target technology and the environments in which the developed hardware accelerators and systems may be employed, dependability issues have been analyzed, leading to the development of a platform for quickly assessing the reliability and characterizing the behavior of hardware accelerators implemented on reconfigurable FPGAs when they are affected by such faults

    A framework for the design, prototyping and evaluation of mobile interfaces for domestic environments

    The idea of the smart home has been discussed for over three decades, but it has yet to achieve mass-market adoption. This thesis asks the question Why is my home not smart? It highlights four main areas that are barriers to adoption, and concentrates on a single one of these issues: usability. It presents an investigation that focuses on design, prototyping and evaluation of mobile interfaces for domestic environments resulting in the development of a novel framework. A smart home is the physical realisation of a ubiquitous computing system for domestic living. The research area offers numerous benefits to end-users such as convenience, assistive living, energy saving and improved security and safety. However, these benefits have yet to become accessible due to a lack of usable smart home control interfaces. This issue is considered a key reason for lack of adoption and is the focus for this thesis. Within this thesis, a framework is introduced as a novel approach for the design, prototyping and evaluation of mobile interfaces for domestic environments. Included within this framework are three components. Firstly, the Reconfigurable Multimedia Environment (RME), a physical evaluation and observation space for conducting user centred research. Secondly, Simulated Interactive Devices (SID), a video-based development and control tool for simulating interactive devices commonly found within a smart home. Thirdly, iProto, a tool that facilitates the production and rapid deployment of high fidelity prototypes for mobile touch screen devices. This framework is evaluated as a round-tripping toolchain for prototyping smart home control and found to be an efficient process for facilitating the design and evaluation of such interfaces

    Indexing of fictional video content for event detection and summarisation

    This paper presents an approach to movie video indexing that utilises audiovisual analysis to detect important and meaningful temporal video segments, that we term events. We consider three event classes, corresponding to dialogues, action sequences, and montages, where the latter also includes musical sequences. These three event classes are intuitive for a viewer to understand and recognise whilst accounting for over 90% of the content of most movies. To detect events we leverage traditional filmmaking principles and map these to a set of computable low-level audiovisual features. Finite state machines (FSMs) are used to detect when temporal sequences of specific features occur. A set of heuristics, again inspired by filmmaking conventions, are then applied to the output of multiple FSMs to detect the required events. A movie search system, named MovieBrowser, built upon this approach is also described. The overall approach is evaluated against a ground truth of over twenty-three hours of movie content drawn from various genres and consistently obtains high precision and recall for all event classes. A user experiment designed to evaluate the usefulness of an event-based structure for both searching and browsing movie archives is also described and the results indicate the usefulness of the proposed approach

    An IoT system for smart building combining multiple mmWave FMCW radars applied to people counting

    In contemporary society, the pressing challenge of preserving user privacy clashes with the imperative for smart buildings to efficiently manage their resources, particularly in the context of occupancy monitoring for optimized energy utilization. This paper delves into the application of millimiter wave (mmWave) frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar technology for occupancy monitoring. mmWave FMCW radar, unlike conventional methods that often require the use of identifiable tags or involve image analysis, operates without the need for such identifiers, mitigating privacy concerns. However, challenges arise when attempting to cover extensive indoor spaces due to the limited range of individual mmWave FMCW radar devices. The present work proposes the use of a flexible software architecture to integrate the measurements of several mmWave FMCW radar devices, so that the whole behaves as a single sensor. To validate the proposal, an example of use in a real environment in an indoor space monitored with three mmWave FMCW radar devices is also presented. The example details the whole process, from the physical installation of the devices to the use of the different software modules that allow the integration of the data into a common internet of things (IoT) management platform such as Home Assistant.     An Image Enhancement Approach to Achieve High Speed Using Adaptive Modified Bilateral Filter for Satellite Images Using FPGA

    For real time application scenarios of image processing, satellite imaginary has grown more interest by researches due to the informative nature of image. Satellite images are captured using high quality cameras. These images are captured from space using on-board cameras. Wrong ISO setting, camera vibrations or wrong sensory setting causes noise. The degraded image can cause less efficient results during visual perception which is a challenging issue for researchers. Another reason is that noise corrupts the image during acquisition, transmission, interference or dust particles on the scanner screen of image from satellite to the earth stations. If quality degraded images are used for further processing then it may result in wrong information extraction. In order to cater this issue, image filtering or denoising approach is required. Since remote sensing images are captured from space using on-board camera which requires high speed operating device which can provide better reconstruction quality by utilizing lesser power consumption. Recently various approaches have been proposed for image filtering. Key challenges with these approaches are reconstruction quality, operating speed, image quality by preserving information at edges on image. Proposed approach is named as modified bilateral filter. In this approach bilateral filter and kernel schemes are combined. In order to overcome the drawbacks, modified bilateral filtering by using FPGA to perform the parallelism process for denoising is implemented

    Adaptive Prognostic Malfunction Based Processor for Autonomous Landing Guidance Assistance System Using FPGA

    The demand for more developed and agile urban taxi drones is increasing rapidly nowadays to sustain crowded cities and their traffic issues. The critical factor for spreading such technology could be related to the safety criteria that must be considered. One of the most critical safety aspects for such vertical and/or Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL) drones is related to safety during the landing stage, in which most of the recent flight accidents have occurred. This paper focused on solving this issue by proposing decentralized processing cores that could improve the landing failure rate by depending on a Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) and additional Digital Signal Processing (DSP) elements. Also, the proposed system will enhance the safety factor during the landing stages by adding a self-awareness feature in case a certain sensor malfunction occurs using the proposed Adaptive Prognostic Malfunction Unit (APMU). This proposed coarse-grained Autonomous Landing Guidance Assistance System (ALGAS4) processing architecture has been optimized using different optimization techniques. The ALGAS4 architecture has been designed completely using VHDL, and the targeted FPGA was the INTEL Cyclone V 5CGXFC9D6F27C7 chip. According to the synthesis findings of the INTEL Quartus Prime software, the maximum working frequency of the ALGAS4 system is 278.24 MHz. In addition, the proposed ALGAS4 system could maintain a maximum computing performance of approximately 74.85 GOPS while using just 166.56 mW for dynamic and I/O power dissipation.Comment: Published in: IEEE Access ( Volume: 12) - Page(s): 2113 - 212
