Advances in Rotating Electric Machines
It is difficult to imagine a modern society without rotating electric machines. Their use has been increasing not only in the traditional fields of application but also in more contemporary fields, including renewable energy conversion systems, electric aircraft, aerospace, electric vehicles, unmanned propulsion systems, robotics, etc. This has contributed to advances in the materials, design methodologies, modeling tools, and manufacturing processes of current electric machines, which are characterized by high compactness, low weight, high power density, high torque density, and high reliability. On the other hand, the growing use of electric machines and drives in more critical applications has pushed forward the research in the area of condition monitoring and fault tolerance, leading to the development of more reliable diagnostic techniques and more fault-tolerant machines. This book presents and disseminates the most recent advances related to the theory, design, modeling, application, control, and condition monitoring of all types of rotating electric machines

Control strategies for blended braking in road vehicles. A study of control strategies for blended friction and regenerative braking in road vehicles based on maximising energy recovery while always meeting the driver demand.
In HEV and EV, higher fuel economy is achieved by operating the ICE and electric motor in the most efficient region and by using regenerative braking. Such a braking system converts, transfers, stores and reuses kinetic energy which would otherwise be dissipated as heat through friction brakes to the environment. This research investigates the control of braking for a mixed-mode braking system in a these vehicles based on the proportion of braking energy that can be stored.
Achieving mixed-mode braking requires the ‘blending’ of the two systems (regenerative and friction), and in brake blending, the electric motor/generator (M/G) and the hydraulic actuation pressure are controlled together to meet the driver’s braking demand. The research presented here has established a new robust dynamic modelling procedure for the design of combined regenerative and hydraulic braking systems. Direct torque control and pressure control were selected as the control criteria in both brakes.
Two simulation models have been developed in Matlab/Simulink to generate analysis the performance of the control strategy in the blended braking system. Integration of the regenerative braking system with ABS has also been completed, based on two conditions, with and without the deactivation of the regenerative braking. Verification of the models is presented, based on experimental work on two EVs manufactured by TATA Motors; the ACE light commercial vehicle and the VISTA small passenger car. It is concluded that braking demand and vehicle speed determine the operating point of the motor/generator and hence the regenerative braking ratio
Flux switching machine design for high-speed geared drives
Electrical machines capable of high-speed operation are key technology used in many modern applications, such as gas turbine electrical systems, high-speed fly-wheels, turbochargers, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines. The use of geared high-speed machines to replace low-speed high torque drives has not been adequately researched to-date. The rationale of this thesis is to investigate a candidate high speed machine, namely flux switching machines to be used together with new types of core material with mechanical gearing to deliver high-torque and low speeds. Modern developments in advanced material technology have produced new magnetic materials capable of dealing with high resulting in very low losses in high speed machines. However, such metals typically have low mechanical strength, and they are found to be brittle. In order to manufacture electromechanical device with such new materials, it has to be reinforced with a mechanically strong structure. The use of multiple types of magnetic materials referred as a MMLC has been proposed in this thesis for high-speed machine design. In this research, a generic method using magnetic equivalent circuit to model flux switching machines (FSMs) is investigated. Moreover modeling, based on machine dimensions for multiphase FSMs having any pole and slot number has been introduced. The air-gap permeance modeling to simplify the magnetic circuit calculation of FSMs was also investigated in this thesis. It is shown that the permeability of magnetic material can be adjusted with the use of MMLC material. Using this feature, the FSM mathematical model is used to show the impact on electromagnetic performance using MMLCs and is shown to be beneficial. In order the evaluate the weight benefits of using geared high speed FSMs, the planetary gear systems are studies and their design constraints have been identified. An abstract form of weight estimation for given torque and speed requirements has been developed and validated using commercially available planetary gear specifications. FSMs together with gear boxes have been considered and it is shown that significant weight savings can be achieved at higher diameter and at high speeds

A comparative analysis and optimisation of thermo-mechanical energy storage technologies
Electrical Energy Storage (EES) can decouple energy production from its consumption and is urgently needed by both conventional energy system for load leveling and renewable energy system for intermittency smoothing. Currently, Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) and Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) are the main technologies employed, but they both suffer from high capital cost, geographical constraints and environmental issues. Therefore, many innovative concepts of EES technologies have been proposed recently, including the Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES), Pumped Thermal Energy Storage (PTES), Isothermal Compressed Air Energy Storage (I-CAES) and Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES). All of these EES store electricity in the forms of thermal or mechanical energy, and are most suitable for large-scale energy storage. As a result, they have received intensive treatment from both the industry and academia, but a comparative study and optimization of these large-scale thermo-mechanical energy storage systems from a thermo-economic perspective has so far been lacking, which forms the major part of this thesis.
In this thesis, a complete set of system models have been developed for each EES technology, incorporating both thermodynamic and economic factors with due consideration for the constraints and variation ranges of each parameter. Then parametric studies are carried out for each system to analyze the impact of each parameter on the system performance (e.g., efficiency and unit cost). Loss and cost distributions are given for the representative cases, and the detailed explanation and potential improvement are also provided. After that, thermoeconomic optimizations are carried out for each individual system, and the trade-off between efficiency and unit cost as well as the main factors controlling this trade-off are revealed. Finally, these optimized systems are compared with each other, and new EES systems that combined the merits of existing ones are proposed as well. The results show that A-CAES and I-CAES tend to have higher system efficiency and lower unit cost than PTES and LAES, but the PTES and LAES enjoys higher energy density and more siting freedom. More information about the component efficiency and cost is required for an accurate comparison between A-CAES and I-CAES, and between PTES and LAES
Epidemiology of Injury in English Women's Super league Football: A Cohort Study
INTRODUCTION: The epidemiology of injury in male professional football has been well documented (Ekstrand, Hägglund, & Waldén, 2011) and used as a basis to understand injury trends for a number of years. The prevalence and incidence of injuries occurring in womens super league football is unknown. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence and incidence of injury in an English Super League Women’s Football squad. METHODS: Following ethical approval from Leeds Beckett University, players (n = 25) signed to a Women’s Super League Football club provided written informed consent to complete a self-administered injury survey. Measures of exposure, injury and performance over a 12-month period was gathered. Participants were classified as injured if they reported a football injury that required medical attention or withdrawal from participation for one day or more. Injuries were categorised as either traumatic or overuse and whether the injury was a new injury and/or re-injury of the same anatomical site RESULTS: 43 injuries, including re-injury were reported by the 25 participants providing a clinical incidence of 1.72 injuries per player. Total incidence of injury was 10.8/1000 h (95% CI: 7.5 to 14.03). Participants were at higher risk of injury during a match compared with training (32.4 (95% CI: 15.6 to 48.4) vs 8.0 (95% CI: 5.0 to 10.85)/1000 hours, p 28 days) of which there were three non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The epidemiological incidence proportion was 0.80 (95% CI: 0.64 to 0.95) and the average probability that any player on this team will sustain at least one injury was 80.0% (95% CI: 64.3% to 95.6%) CONCLUSION: This is the first report capturing exposure and injury incidence by anatomical site from a cohort of English players and is comparable to that found in Europe (6.3/1000 h (95% CI 5.4 to 7.36) Larruskain et al 2017). The number of ACL injuries highlights a potential injury burden for a squad of this size.
