    Design of CORDIC-based Digital Protective Relay

    Protective relays are used to show the current status of a given power system. It is used to determine whether parameters like voltage or current violate any trip or reset specification or condition. In this project, overcurrent time invariant model of protective relay is implemented using CORDIC algorithm. Here we use CORDIC algorithm to implement the relay flowchart. All of the arithmetic calculations and relaying algorithms can be managed by a CORDIC processor. As CORDIC algorithm is simple to implement, it has a very low FPGA footprint and it negates any need of multipliers as well. In this project: 1) A basic implementation of sine/cosine calculation of CORDIC using VHDL in Xilinx ISE 10.1 is implemented to check the accuracy 2) Various modules needed to calculate the protective relay status of trip or reset condition were developed 3) A final implementation of overcurrent relay was done and accuracy checked

    Timing Signals and Radio Frequency Distribution Using Ethernet Networks for High Energy Physics Applications

    Timing networks are used around the world in various applications from telecommunications systems to industrial processes, and from radio astronomy to high energy physics. Most timing networks are implemented using proprietary technologies at high operation and maintenance costs. This thesis presents a novel timing network capable of distributed timing with subnanosecond accuracy. The network, developed at CERN and codenamed “White- Rabbit”, uses a non-dedicated Ethernet link to distribute timing and data packets without infringing the sub-nanosecond timing accuracy required for high energy physics applications. The first part of this thesis proposes a new digital circuit capable of measuring time differences between two digital clock signals with sub-picosecond time resolution. The proposed digital circuit measures and compensates for the phase variations between the transmitted and received network clocks required to achieve the sub-nanosecond timing accuracy. Circuit design, implementation and performance verification are reported. The second part of this thesis investigates and proposes a new method to distribute radio frequency (RF) signals over Ethernet networks. The main goal of existing distributed RF schemes, such as Radio-Over-Fibre or Digitised Radio-Over-Fibre, is to increase the bandwidth capacity taking advantage of the higher performance of digital optical links. These schemes tend to employ dedicated and costly technologies, deemed unnecessary for applications with lower bandwidth requirements. This work proposes the distribution of RF signals over the “White-Rabbit” network, to convey phase and frequency information from a reference base node to a large numbers of remote nodes, thus achieving high performance and cost reduction of the timing network. Hence, this thesis reports the design and implementation of a new distributed RF system architecture; analysed and tested using a purpose-built simulation environment, with results used to optimise a new bespoke FPGA implementation. The performance is evaluated through phase-noise spectra, the Allan-Variance, and signalto- noise ratio measurements of the distributed signals

    Embedded electronic systems driven by run-time reconfigurable hardware

    Abstract This doctoral thesis addresses the design of embedded electronic systems based on run-time reconfigurable hardware technology –available through SRAM-based FPGA/SoC devices– aimed at contributing to enhance the life quality of the human beings. This work does research on the conception of the system architecture and the reconfiguration engine that provides to the FPGA the capability of dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to synthesize, by means of hardware/software co-design, a given application partitioned in processing tasks which are multiplexed in time and space, optimizing thus its physical implementation –silicon area, processing time, complexity, flexibility, functional density, cost and power consumption– in comparison with other alternatives based on static hardware (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). The design flow of such technology is evaluated through the prototyping of several engineering applications (control systems, mathematical coprocessors, complex image processors, etc.), showing a high enough level of maturity for its exploitation in the industry.Resumen Esta tesis doctoral abarca el diseño de sistemas electrónicos embebidos basados en tecnología hardware dinámicamente reconfigurable –disponible a través de dispositivos lógicos programables SRAM FPGA/SoC– que contribuyan a la mejora de la calidad de vida de la sociedad. Se investiga la arquitectura del sistema y del motor de reconfiguración que proporcione a la FPGA la capacidad de reconfiguración dinámica parcial de sus recursos programables, con objeto de sintetizar, mediante codiseño hardware/software, una determinada aplicación particionada en tareas multiplexadas en tiempo y en espacio, optimizando así su implementación física –área de silicio, tiempo de procesado, complejidad, flexibilidad, densidad funcional, coste y potencia disipada– comparada con otras alternativas basadas en hardware estático (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). Se evalúa el flujo de diseño de dicha tecnología a través del prototipado de varias aplicaciones de ingeniería (sistemas de control, coprocesadores aritméticos, procesadores de imagen, etc.), evidenciando un nivel de madurez viable ya para su explotación en la industria.Resum Aquesta tesi doctoral està orientada al disseny de sistemes electrònics empotrats basats en tecnologia hardware dinàmicament reconfigurable –disponible mitjançant dispositius lògics programables SRAM FPGA/SoC– que contribueixin a la millora de la qualitat de vida de la societat. Uniquely, the devices use an optimised form of Power Line Communication to enable a low latency communication network.     The precision pointing control system (PPCS) is an integrated system for precision attitude determination and orientation of gimbaled experiment platforms. The PPCS concept configures the system to perform orientation of up to six independent gimbaled experiment platforms to design goal accuracy of 0.001 degrees, and to operate in conjunction with a three-axis stabilized earth-oriented spacecraft in orbits ranging from low altitude (200-2500 n.m., sun synchronous) to 24 hour geosynchronous, with a design goal life of 3 to 5 years. The system comprises two complementary functions: (1) attitude determination where the attitude of a defined set of body-fixed reference axes is determined relative to a known set of reference axes fixed in inertial space; and (2) pointing control where gimbal orientation is controlled, open-loop (without use of payload error/feedback) with respect to a defined set of body-fixed reference axes to produce pointing to a desired target

    Artificial neural networks and their applications to intelligent fault diagnosis of power transmission lines

    Over the past thirty years, the idea of computing based on models inspired by human brains and biological neural networks emerged. Artificial neural networks play an important role in the field of machine learning and hold the key to the success of performing many intelligent tasks by machines. They are used in various applications such as pattern recognition, data classification, stock market prediction, aerospace, weather forecasting, control systems, intelligent automation, robotics, and healthcare. Their architectures generally consist of an input layer, multiple hidden layers, and one output layer. They can be implemented on software or hardware. Nowadays, various structures with various names exist for artificial neural networks, each of which has its own particular applications. Those used types in this study include feedforward neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and general regression neural networks. Increasing the number of layers in artificial neural networks as needed for large datasets, implies increased computational expenses. Therefore, besides these basic structures in deep learning, some advanced techniques are proposed to overcome the drawbacks of original structures in deep learning such as transfer learning, federated learning, and reinforcement learning. Furthermore, implementing artificial neural networks in hardware gives scientists and engineers the chance to perform high-dimensional and big data-related tasks because it removes the constraints of memory access time defined as the von Neuman bottleneck. Accordingly, analog and digital circuits are used for artificial neural network implementations without using general-purpose CPUs. In this study, the problem of fault detection, identification, and location estimation of transmission lines is studied and various deep learning approaches are implemented and designed as solutions. This research work focuses on the transmission lines’ datasets, their faults, and the importance of identification, detection, and location estimation of them. It also includes a comprehensive review of the previous studies to perform these three tasks. The application of various artificial neural networks such as feedforward neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and general regression neural networks for identification, detection, and location estimation of transmission line datasets are also discussed in this study. Some advanced methods based on artificial neural networks are taken into account in this thesis such as the transfer learning technique. These methodologies are designed and applied on transmission line datasets to enable the scientist and engineers with using fewer data points for the training purpose and wasting less time on the training step. This work also proposes a transfer learning-based technique for distinguishing faulty and non-faulty insulators in transmission line images. Besides, an effective design for an activation function of the artificial neural networks is proposed in this thesis. Using hyperbolic tangent as an activation function in artificial neural networks has several benefits including inclusiveness and high accuracy
