Natural hazards are physical phenomena active in geological times, whereas technological hazards result from actions or facilities created by humans. In our time, combined natural and man-made hazards have been induced. Overpopulation and urban development in areas prone to natural hazards increase the impact of natural disasters worldwide. Additionally, urban areas are frequently characterized by intense industrial activity and rapid, poorly planned growth that threatens the environment and degrades the quality of life. Therefore, proper urban planning is crucial to minimize fatalities and reduce the environmental and economic impacts that accompany both natural and technological hazardous events

    Rapid prototyping (RP) technology has been widely known and appreciated due to its flexible and customized manufacturing capabilities. The widely studied RP techniques include stereolithography apparatus (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), three-dimensional printing (3DP), fused deposition modeling (FDM), 3D plotting, solid ground curing (SGC), multiphase jet solidification (MJS), laminated object manufacturing (LOM). Different techniques are associated with different materials and/or processing principles and thus are devoted to specific applications. RP technology has no longer been only for prototype building rather has been extended for real industrial manufacturing solutions. Today, the RP technology has contributed to almost all engineering areas that include mechanical, materials, industrial, aerospace, electrical and most recently biomedical engineering.     Integrated self-consistent macro-micro traffic flow modeling and calibration framework based on trajectory data

    Calibrating microscopic car-following (CF) models is crucial in traffic flow theory as it allows for accurate reproduction and investigation of traffic behavior and phenomena. Typically, the calibration procedure is a complicated, non-convex optimization issue. When the traffic state is in equilibrium, the macroscopic flow model can be derived analytically from the corresponding CF model. In contrast to the microscopic CF model, calibrated based on trajectory data, the macroscopic representation of the fundamental diagram (FD) primarily adopts loop detector data for calibration. The different calibration approaches at the macro- and microscopic levels may lead to misaligned parameters with identical practical meanings in both macro- and micro-traffic models. This inconsistency arises from the difference between the parameter calibration processes used in macro- and microscopic traffic flow models. Hence, this study proposes an integrated multiresolution traffic flow modeling framework using the same trajectory data for parameter calibration based on the self-consistency concept. This framework incorporates multiple objective functions in the macro- and micro-dimensions. To expeditiously execute the proposed framework, an improved metaheuristic multi-objective optimization algorithm is presented that employs multiple enhancement strategies. Additionally, a deep learning technique based on attention mechanisms was used to extract stationary-state traffic data for the macroscopic calibration process, instead of directly using the entire aggregated data. We conducted experiments using real-world and synthetic trajectory data to validate our self-consistent calibration framework

    Electromagnetic imaging and deep learning for transition to renewable energies: a technology review

    Electromagnetic imaging is a technique that has been employed and perfected to investigate the Earth subsurface over the past three decades. Besides the traditional geophysical surveys (e.g., hydrocarbon exploration, geological mapping), several new applications have appeared (e.g., characterization of geothermal energy reservoirs, capture and storage of carbon dioxide, water prospecting, and monitoring of hazardous-waste deposits). The development of new numerical schemes, algorithms, and easy access to supercomputers have supported innovation throughout the geo-electromagnetic community. In particular, deep learning solutions have taken electromagnetic imaging technology to a different level. These emerging deep learning tools have significantly contributed to data processing for enhanced electromagnetic imaging of the Earth. Herein, we review innovative electromagnetic imaging technologies and deep learning solutions and their role in better understanding useful resources for the energy transition path. To better understand this landscape, we describe the physics behind electromagnetic imaging, current trends in its numerical modeling, development of computational tools (traditional approaches and emerging deep learning schemes), and discuss some key applications for the energy transition. We focus on the need to explore all the alternatives of technologies and expertise transfer to propel the energy landscape forward.     Review of advanced road materials, structures, equipment, and detection technologies

    As a vital and integral component of transportation infrastructure, pavement has a direct and tangible impact on socio-economic sustainability. In recent years, an influx of groundbreaking and state-of-the-art materials, structures, equipment, and detection technologies related to road engineering have continually and progressively emerged, reshaping the landscape of pavement systems. There is a pressing and growing need for a timely summarization of the current research status and a clear identification of future research directions in these advanced and evolving technologies. Therefore, Journal of Road Engineering has undertaken the significant initiative of introducing a comprehensive review paper with the overarching theme of “advanced road materials, structures, equipment, and detection technologies”. This extensive and insightful review meticulously gathers and synthesizes research findings from 39 distinguished scholars, all of whom are affiliated with 19 renowned universities or research institutions specializing in the diverse and multidimensional field of highway engineering. It covers the current state and anticipates future development directions in the four major and interconnected domains of road engineering: advanced road materials, advanced road structures and performance evaluation, advanced road construction equipment and technology, and advanced road detection and assessment technologies

    An object-based image analysis approach for detecting urban impervious surfaces

    Impervious surfaces are manmade surfaces which are highly resistant to infiltration of water. Previous attempts to classify impervious surfaces from high spatial resolution imagery with pixel-based techniques have proven to be unsuitable for automated classification because of its high spectral variability and complex land covers in urban areas. Accurate and rapid classification of impervious surfaces would help in emergency management after extreme events like flooding, earthquakes, fires, tsunami, and hurricanes, by providing quick estimates and updated maps for emergency response. The objectives of this study were to: (1) compare classification accuracy between pixel-based and OBIA methods, (2) examine whether the object-based image analysis (OBIA) could better detect urban impervious surfaces, and (3) develop an automated, generalized OBIA classification method for impervious surfaces. This study analyzed urban impervious surfaces using a 1-meter spatial resolution, four band Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quad (DOQQ) aerial imagery of downtown New Orleans, Louisiana taken as part of post Hurricane Katrina and Rita dataset. The study compared the traditional pixel-based classification with four variations of the rule-based OBIA approach for classification accuracy. A four-class classification scheme was used for the analysis, including impervious surfaces, vegetation, shadow, and water. The results show that OBIA accuracy ranges from 85.33% through 91.41% compared with 80.67% classification accuracy from using the pixel-based approach. OBIA rule-based method 4 utilizing a multi-resolution segmentation approach and derived spectral indices such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), and the Spectral Shape Index (SSI) was the best method, yielding a 91.41% classification accuracy. OBIA rule-based method 4 can be automated and generalized for multiple study areas. A test of the segmentation parameters show that parameter values of scale ≤ 20, color/shape ranging from 0.1 - 0.3, and compactness/smoothness ranging from 0.4 - 0.6 yielded the highest classification accuracies. These results show that the developed OBIA method was accurate, generalizable, and capable of automation for the classification of urban impervious surfaces

    Modeling Older Driver Behavior on Freeway Merging Ramps

    Merging from on-ramps to mainline traffic is one of the most challenging driving maneuvers on freeways. The challenges are further heightened for older drivers, as they are known to have longer perception-reaction times, larger acceptance gaps, and slower acceleration rates. In this research, VISSIM, a microscopic traffic simulation software, was used to evaluate the influence of the aging drivers on the operations of a typical diamond interchange. First, drivers were recorded on video cameras as they negotiated joining the mainline traffic from an on-ramp acceleration lane at two sites along I-75 in Southwest Florida. Several measures of effectiveness were collected including speeds, gaps, and location of entry to the mainline lanes. This information was used as either model input or for verification purposes. Two VISSIM models were developed for each site – one for the existing conditions and verification, and another for a sensitivity analysis, varying the percentage of older drivers and Level of Service (from A to E), to determine their influence on ramp operational characteristics. According to the results, there was a significant difference in driving behavior between older, middle-aged, and younger drivers, based on the measures of effectiveness analyzed in this study. Additionally, as the level of service and percentage of older adult motorists increased, longer queues were observed with slower speeds on the acceleration lanes and the right-most travel lane of the mainline traffic

    Google the earth: what's next?

    Sensing the Earth has proven to be a tremendously valuable tool for understanding the world around us. Over the last half-century, we have built a sophisticated network of satellites, aircraft, and ground-based remote sensing systems to provide raw information from which we derive and improve our knowledge of the Earth and its phenomena. Through remote sensing, our basic scientific knowledge of the Earth and how it functions has expanded rapidly in the last few decades. Applications of this knowledge, from natural hazard prediction to resource management, have already proven their benefit to society many times over. Today maps and satellite imageries have become an integral part of the developmental process and have also triggered new business opportunities. Maps are essential at all stages of infrastructure development, resource planning and the disaster management cycle. Satellite imagery/data can be used for everything from ground truthing and change detection, to more sophisticated analyses, including feature extraction and natural hazard prediction. As imagery has become more accessible and more affordable in recent years, there is also a growing convergence of imagery and geographic information system (GIS) applications. Geospatial scientists and analysts thus, need to be able to easily access imagery and move seamlessly between GIS and image processing applications to derive the most information possible from them. Technologically, the challenge is to design sensors that exhibit high sensitivity to the parameters of interest while minimizing instrument noise and impacts of other natural variables. The scientific challenge is to develop retrieval algorithms that describe the physical measurement process in sufficient detail, yet are simple enough to allow robust inversion of the remotely sensed signals. Considering the exponential growth of data volumes driven by the rapid progress in sensor and computer technologies in recent years, the future of remotely sensed data should ideally be in automated data processing, development of robust and transferable algorithms and processing chains that require little or no human intervention. In meeting the above mentioned challenges, some research works have been done at Universiti Putra Malaysia. These works cover all aspects of the remote sensing process, from instrument design, image processing, image analysis to the retrieval of geophysical parameters and their application in natural resources planning and disaster management. Some of the major research efforts include feature extraction from satellite imagery; spatial decision support system for oil spill detection, monitoring and contingency planning; fish forecasting; UAV-based remote imaging and natural disaster management and early warning systems for floods and landslides. This lecture concludes that through remote sensing, our basic scientific knowledge of the Earth and how it functions have expanded rapidly in the last few decades. Applications of this knowledge, from natural hazard prediction to resource management, have already proven to be beneficial to society many times over. As the demand for even faster, better and more temporally and spatially variable information grows dramatically, this lectures answers the question of what remote sensing will be like in the coming decades and the new capabilities and challenges that will emerg
