Co-Bridges: Pair-wise Visual Connection and Comparison for Multi-item Data Streams
In various domains, there are abundant streams or sequences of multi-item data of various kinds, e.g. streams of news and social media texts, sequences of genes and sports events, etc. Comparison is an important and general task in data analysis. For comparing data streams involving multiple items (e.g., words in texts, actors or action types in action sequences, visited places in itineraries, etc.), we propose Co-Bridges, a visual design involving connection and comparison techniques that reveal similarities and differences between two streams. Co-Bridges use river and bridge metaphors, where two sides of a river represent data streams, and bridges connect temporally or sequentially aligned segments of streams. Commonalities and differences between these segments in terms of involvement of various items are shown on the bridges. Interactive query tools support the selection of particular stream subsets for focused exploration. The visualization supports both qualitative (common and distinct items) and quantitative (stream volume, amount of item involvement) comparisons. We further propose Comparison-of-Comparisons, in which two or more Co-Bridges corresponding to different selections are juxtaposed. We test the applicability of the Co-Bridges in different domains, including social media text streams and sports event sequences. We perform an evaluation of the users' capability to understand and use Co-Bridges. The results confirm that Co-Bridges is effective for supporting pair-wise visual comparisons in a wide range of applications
Explorative Visual Analysis of Rap Music
Detecting references and similarities in music lyrics can be a difficult task. Crowdsourced knowledge platforms such as Genius. can help in this process through user-annotated information about the artist and the song but fail to include visualizations to help users find similarities and structures on a higher and more abstract level. We propose a prototype to compute similarities between rap artists based on word embedding of their lyrics crawled from Genius. Furthermore, the artists and their lyrics can be analyzed using an explorative visualization system applying multiple visualization methods to support domain-specific tasks
Towards the Internet of Smart Trains: A Review on Industrial IoT-Connected Railways
[Abstract] Nowadays, the railway industry is in a position where it is able to exploit the opportunities created by the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and enabling communication technologies under the paradigm of Internet of Trains. This review details the evolution of communication technologies since the deployment of GSM-R, describing the main alternatives and how railway requirements, specifications and recommendations have evolved over time. The advantages of the latest generation of broadband communication systems (e.g., LTE, 5G, IEEE 802.11ad) and the emergence of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for the railway environment are also explained together with the strategic roadmap to ensure a smooth migration from GSM-R. Furthermore, this survey focuses on providing a holistic approach, identifying scenarios and architectures where railways could leverage better commercial IIoT capabilities. After reviewing the main industrial developments, short and medium-term IIoT-enabled services for smart railways are evaluated. Then, it is analyzed the latest research on predictive maintenance, smart infrastructure, advanced monitoring of assets, video surveillance systems, railway operations, Passenger and Freight Information Systems (PIS/FIS), train control systems, safety assurance, signaling systems, cyber security and energy efficiency. Overall, it can be stated that the aim of this article is to provide a detailed examination of the state-of-the-art of different technologies and services that will revolutionize the railway industry and will allow for confronting today challenges.Galicia. The State of the Art in Multilayer Network Visualization
Modelling relationship between entities in real-world systems with a simple graph is a standard approach. However, realityis better embraced as several interdependent subsystems (or layers). Recently, the concept of a multilayer network model hasemerged from the field of complex systems. This model can be applied to a wide range of real-world data sets. Examples ofmultilayer networks can be found in the domains of life sciences, sociology, digital humanities and more. Within the domainof graph visualization, there are many systems which visualize data sets having many characteristics of multilayer graphs. This report provides a state of the art and a structured analysis of contemporary multilayer network visualization, not only forresearchers in visualization, but also for those who aim to visualize multilayer networks in the domain of complex systems, as wellas those developing systems across application domains. We have explored the visualization literature to survey visualizationtechniques suitable for multilayer graph visualization, as well as tools, tasks and analytic techniques from within applicationdomains. This report also identifies the outstanding challenges for multilayer graph visualization and suggests future researchdirections for addressing them
Hillview:A trillion-cell spreadsheet for big data
Hillview is a distributed spreadsheet for browsing very large datasets that
cannot be handled by a single machine. As a spreadsheet, Hillview provides a
high degree of interactivity that permits data analysts to explore information
quickly along many dimensions while switching visualizations on a whim. To
provide the required responsiveness, Hillview introduces visualization
sketches, or vizketches, as a simple idea to produce compact data
visualizations. Vizketches combine algorithmic techniques for data
summarization with computer graphics principles for efficient rendering. While
simple, vizketches are effective at scaling the spreadsheet by parallelizing
computation, reducing communication, providing progressive visualizations, and
offering precise accuracy guarantees. Using Hillview running on eight servers,
we can navigate and visualize datasets of tens of billions of rows and
trillions of cells, much beyond the published capabilities of competing
systems
Supporting Methodology Transfer in Visualization Research with Literature-Based Discovery and Visual Text Analytics
Unsupervised Human Activity Recognition Using the Clustering Approach: A Review
Currently, many applications have emerged from the implementation of softwaredevelopment and hardware use, known as the Internet of things. One of the most importantapplication areas of this type of technology is in health care. Various applications arise daily inorder to improve the quality of life and to promote an improvement in the treatments of patients athome that suffer from different pathologies. That is why there has emerged a line of work of greatinterest, focused on the study and analysis of daily life activities, on the use of different data analysistechniques to identify and to help manage this type of patient. This article shows the result of thesystematic review of the literature on the use of the Clustering method, which is one of the mostused techniques in the analysis of unsupervised data applied to activities of daily living, as well asthe description of variables of high importance as a year of publication, type of article, most usedalgorithms, types of dataset used, and metrics implemented. These data will allow the reader tolocate the recent results of the application of this technique to a particular area of knowledg
