Review: Time and Space in American Literary History

In one of the 26 contributing essays to Finding Colonial Americas, Kevin Hayes reconstructs the reading experience of the early eighteenth-century historian Thomas Prince, who scrupulously read the Virginia texts of John Smith and consulted French historiographic as well as English and colonial American historical texts before writing his own history of New England. The essay wonderfully illustrates the dependence of this local history on a transregional and intercontinental network of texts. The many books Prince consulted helped him to define the temporal mode of his history as well as its spatial shape, for among Prince\u27s sources was Pierre Le Mayne\u27s 1695 Of the Art Both of Writing and Judging of History, which distinguishes between history- a continued Relation, that has all its Parts fastned together, as those of the Body or regular Edifice - and annals - a collection whose Parts not being joyn\u27d, without Correspondence, without Union, are only rude Heaps of Materials (Le Mayne 54; qtd. in Finding Colonial Americas 367-68). While this distinction between history and annals might seem somewhat simplistic, it is also quite thought-provoking in the context of the two titles under review here and their implicit engagement with forms ofliterary historical narrative. Emory Elliott\u27s Cambridge Introduction to Early American Literature and Carla Mulford and David Shields\u27s edited collection Finding Colonial Americas offer representations of the scope and shape of colonial American literature and culture that are as different in their form as in their content. In fact, while one is quite clearly a completed story, the other might more accurately be called an unfinished map, such that reading these two books together generates critical and fascinating questions about the temporal and spatial frameworks that have organized (or may yet organize) American literary history and have determined (or may yet determine) colonial America\u27s place in that history

Literature in Transition : European aesthetics and the early American novel

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to account for the strangely double nature of the early American novel. For twenty-first-century readers, novels such as Hugh Henry Brackenridge's Modem Chivalry, Susanna Rowson's Charlotte Temple or Charles Brockden Brown's Wieland seem firmly embedded in a premodern culture that subordinates the rights of art under those of religion, morality, and education. In their persistent didacticism, their claims to truthfulness and social utility, and their long authorial digressions, these texts perform those kinds of heteronomous functions Romantic theorizing and literary practice of the early nineteenth century would seek to reject in their quest for literary autonomy. Yet a closer look at early American novels also reveals elements of modern artistic practice that exist side by side with premodern residues. Brackenridge, for instance, repeatedly insists that his work is but an exercise in style devoid of ideas, praises originality and the figure of the genius, consistently privileges form over subject matter, and ridicules the excessive didacticism of his contemporaries. In such passages, we can see a modern consciousness at work. Tensions between these modern impulses and a premodern sensibility pervade both early novels and aesthetics, another invention of the eighteenth century. This paper discusses those tensions from a systems-theoretical perspective

katedra: KTV; přílohy: CD; rozsah: 53The aim of the thesis was to determine the optimal way of diagnosing energy release of organism for requirements of Laboratory of sports motorics of Technical University of Liberec. The all-day energy release was devided into several sections according to the degree of intensity of moving activity of the observed object. The suitable method for diagnosing energy release of the section was chosen with dependence on intensity of strain. We use a method of multiple of basal metabolism for sleep and then method of indirect ?calorimetry? based on determination of total oxygen consumption. The consumption is found out from a heart frequency average estimated or measured immediately. The new methodology was initially verified with using one subject and the results were compared to a questionnaire method which is currently the most widespread way of estimation the energy release. Huge differences were proved, especially for activities done with higher intensity. The questionnaire method strongly underestimates energy release. What concerns verification of the metohodology described the thesis can be used for nutritive and fitness cinsultancy especially of active sportsmen.Cílem bakalářské práce bylo stanovení optimálního způsobu určování energetického výdeje pro potřeby Laboratoře sportovní motoriky Technické univerzity v Liberci. V případě verifikace popsané metodiky dalším výzkumem najde práce uplatnění v nutričním a kondičním poradenství zejména aktivních sportovců

“Escape”: Ragtime and American National Identity in the Process of “Mobility”

    Get PDF
Ragtime represents the difficult transformation of the modern national identity of American. Doctorow portrays early twentieth-century American society in the process of modernization as an “era of mobility”, and uses the magician Houdini’s “escape” as a lead to connect a series of “escapes” of many characters, which not only deconstructs the “myth of progress” but also shows that the American nation has lost its “center” of cohesion. By using the fluid representation of “escape”, Doctorow conveys a double reflection on the identity of the American nation: first, he denies the significance of “escape” for the construction of cultural identity. On the other hand, he recognizes the pragmatic values and conciliatory political attitude contained in “escape” as a roundabout and resourceful survival strategy, and reshapes the ideal of “melting pot”, revealing an optimistic outlook on American national identity, and ultimately calling for a hybrid and integrative American national identity

American studies and the new historicism

    Get PDF
This essay argues that one major reason American studies has proved resistant to the New Historicism is that its model of pouvoir-savoir, derived from Foucault, works more readily for cultures dominated by centralized power (e.g., Greenblatt's studies of Shakespeare and Renaissance court culture). In the United States, with a tradition of weak and decentralized state power, the relations described by Foucault are more difficult to conceptualize. The other major reason, the essay suggests, is that the "American self' model — a Hegelian notion of "collective consciousness" that dominated American studies from Perry Miller through Bercovitch's Puritans Origins of the American Self — had a certain positive ideological value within American intellectual culture. The essay treats as a representative instance the work of Myra Jehlen, whose American Incarnation was the last major achievement of the "American self approach, and who is today the leading spirit of the Rutgers "new Americanists.
