Irregulars: Guerrilla and Ranchero Warfare in South Texas and Northern Mexico during the Mexican - American War

    Get PDF
The overall outcome of the Mexican - American War (1846-1848) was determined largely by regular military forces. There was, however, another war within this war waged by irregulars, guerrillas, and rancheros from Mexico, as well as by Texas Rangers and elements within the U.S. volunteers. Although these forces were important to both sides in the war effort, people most often remember them for the atrocities they committed

Through the analysis of the Corrido de Joaquín Murrieta, this article studies the mechanisms through which identity fictions and symbolic capital (Bourdieu) are created. In this case the elements mentioned above have its origins in a resistance movement that reacts to the violence and imposition exercised by one nation upon another. The legend of Joaquín Murrieta was born after the conflict between Mexico and The United States (1846-1848). He is a hero for the Mexicans and a bandit for the latter. In this study we will trace the story of the character in its different variations in diverse cultural products and analyze how he became a hero avenger and is part of the national imaginary as a representative not only of the Mexicans but also of other minority and oppressed groups. Corrido de Joaquín Murrietari buruzko ikerlanetik abiatuta, artikulu honek agerian utzi nahi ditu fikzio identitario eta ondasun sinbolikodunak sortzeko erabiltzen diren mekanismoak (Bourdieu). Gure kasuan, horien jatorria nazio batek beste bati eragiten dizkion indarkeriaren eta inposaketaren aurkako erresistentzia-mugimendu bat da. Mexikoren eta Ameriketako Estatu Batuen arteko gatazka dela medio (1846-1848) sortu zen Joaquín Murrietaren kondaira eta, mexikarrek heroitzat jotzen duten bitartean, estatubatuarrek bidelapur bat dela uste dute. Ikusiko dugu, batetik, nola uztartu zuten pertsonaia horren istorioa zenbait kultura produkturekin eta, bestetik, nola bihurtu zuten heroi justiziazale moduko bat, eta baita imaginario nazionalean irudi bera izaten jarraitzen duela ere. Gainera, heroi justiziazale zorrotz hori mexikarren ordezkaritzat edukitzeaz gain, hainbat talde gutxitu eta zapalduen ordezkaritzat jotzen dute

This paper examines fragments from the life of Narain Sing as a means of exploring punishment, labour, society and social transformation in the aftermath of the Anglo–Sikh Wars (1845–1846, 1848–1849). Narain Sing was a famous military general who the British convicted of treason and sentenced to transportation overseas after the annexation of the Panjab in 1849. He was shipped as a convict to one of the East India Company's penal settlements in Burma where, in 1861, he was appointed head police constable of Moulmein. Narain Sing's experiences of military service, conviction, transportation and penal work give us a unique insight into questions of loyalty, treachery, honour, masculinity and status. When his life history is placed within the broader context of continuing agitation against the expansion of British authority in the Panjab, we also glimpse something of the changing nature of identity and the development of Anglo–Sikh relations more broadly between the wars of the 1840s and the Great Indian Revolt of 1857–1858

"We Knew no North, no South": U.S.-Mexican War Veterans and the Construction of Public Memory in the Post-Civil War United States, 1874-1897

    Get PDF
In 1874, American veterans of the U.S.–Mexican War 1846–1848 formed the National Association of Veterans of the Mexican War (NAVMW). Until the organization’s demise in 1897, NAVMW members crafted and celebrated a vision of their war with Mexico as a national triumph which had united Americans from all sections of the Union in a common cause. This article examines how, by promoting this particular memory of the war to the American public, NAVMW members sought to remind their countrymen of their shared national history, and so aid the process of reconciliation between North and South in the post-Civil War era
