Plots of the Future History of 20th Century Russian Literature in “The Chronicle of the Life and Work of S. A. Esenin”
The article is a review of the book "The chronicle of the life and work of S. A. Esenin. V.5. 1925 – mid-1926. In two books. Book 2". It analyzes Esenin’s chronicle of the last days of his life, his creative connections with his contemporaries (Mayakovsky, Klyuyev, Kazin, Budantsev, Voronsky, etc.) and Esenin’s participation in the literary group of imaginists in the early 1920s. It should be noted that many valuable materials about the life and creative work of the poet, as well as about the literary process of the mid-1920s, are published for the first time. The chronicle contains references to foreign publications about Esenin, confirming the extent of the poet’s fame and recognition throughout the world. The reviewer concludes that The chronicle... provides an opportunity to determine the main plots of the history of the Russian literature of the 20th century. The story about the relationships between A. K. Voronsky and Esenin is one of the recurrent plots of Book 2 of Volume 5 of The chronicle... . It is noted that the previously unknown diary of I. V. Evdokimov revealed his contribution to the publication of the collected works of Esenin. The chronicle… reports the participation of the almost forgotten writer S. F. Budantsev in the events aimed to immortalize the memory of the poet. The review of the final book of The chronicle... makes it possible to conclude that the study of the literary biography and creative activity of the poet does not close the topic, but, on the contrary, convincingly demonstrates the prospects for its further development and opens up new vistas for reconstructing a reliable history of the Russian literature of the first half of the 1920s.
The United States of America in Nikolay Chernyshevsky’s What Is to Be Done? and Sergey Yesenin’s Biography: the Way over the Ocean and the Folklore Motif of Wanderings
The article discusses possible sources of Yesenin’s acquaintance with Nikolay Chernyshevsky’s novel What Is to Be Done? and its critical evaluation. Deep comprehension of the the novel on a subconscious level could lead to the fact that the poet’s personal life began to resemble the fate of literary heroes. Yesenin's trip with Isadora Duncan through Western Europe and the United States of America is to some extent reminiscent of Chernyshevsky's characters’ travels abroad; descriptions of their travels in the novel influenced the poet’s attitude to the way of life in different countries. In his autobiographies, Yesenin mentions his trips to America and Western Europe – the fact that emphasizes the importance of these continents in his biography and work; letters from different countries indicating geographic places of stay find parallels with the toponymy in Chernyshevsky’s novel. There is a certain similarity the names in Chernyshevsky’s novel and in Yesenin’s works: Charles and Charin, Jim. Mentioning Ryazan and Tambovskaya guberniia in connection with Lopukhov-Beaumont should have attracted Yesenin’s attention, who was a native of Ryazan region that he praised in his poems; he also wrote about the neighboring Tambov province. Political and economic questions of America raised by Chernyshevsky, Yesenin considered in his Iron Mirgorod

On the influence of the novel What Is to Be Done? by N. G. Chernyshevsky on the work of S. A. Yesenin
The article discusses the origins of Sergei Yesenin’s acquaintance with the novel What Is to Be Done? by N. G. Chernyshevsky: this happened in Spas-Klepikovskaya second-class teacher’s school in 1909-1912. The work was read among the intellectuals, and students outside of school hours argued about it and embraced the ideals of the “new people”. Later Yesenin encountered Chernyshevsky’s novel at the lectures on Russian literature by P. N. Sakulin at Moscow City People’s University named after A. L. Shanyavsky. As a result, a number of elements of Chernyshevsky’s poetics were associatively reflected in Yesenin’s long and short poems as well as in his story Yar. In the works of Yesenin figurative echoes with Chernyshevsky are noticeable. The main ideological moments that worried both writers include: the wonderful future of the Fatherland, the conscious creative arrangement of the earthly paradise in the country. Among artistic means, the writers used the epithet “new”, applied it to the re-interpretation of the biblical laws of human society in terms of freedom, equality and brotherhood. Both writers considered this epithet to be the main element in describing both the process of building a just state system, and in characterizing the creators of a better life. Understanding the importance of the nuances of psychology for each person, Chernyshevsky and Yesenin developed the concept of mystery. Chernyshevsky used the successfully found philosophical solution to create reliable everyday pictures, and Yesenin endowed it with further biblical and mythological meanings, asserting the “mystery” as a comprehensive postulate of sophianism. In his personal life, Yesenin in his youth followed the example of the everyday habits of Rakhmetov, but without repeating the entire line of behavior of Chernyshevsky’s literary character. Yesenin gave his main characters in the story At the White Water (<1915>) unusual names that appear in minor characters and characters mentioned in passing in Chernyshevsky’s novel. However, in order not to assert the comprehensive nature of Yesenin’s borrowings of Chernyshevsky’s creative findings, the article presents other possible sources of names and biographical foundations for some of the poet’s behavioral lines
