Les élites intellectuelles, pour compenser les faiblesses de la puissance économique et militaire de leur pays, auraient alors conçu le projet de faire rayonner leur langue et leur civilisation à travers le monde, un projet universaliste initié de façon consensuelle peu après la défaite de Sedan afin de contrer l'attraction des universités et de la culture du concurrent allemand. Née au seuil des années 1880, cette "action culturelle extérieure", lancée à l'initiative d'organismes privés tels que l'Alliance française sous le regard bienveillant, voire l'aide sonnante et trébuchante de l'État, aurait été de plus en plus récupérée par les pouvoirs publics après la Grande Guerre, tout particulièrement par le Quai d'Orsay, une politique de propagande extérieure désormais suivie par tous les gouvernements de droite comme de gauche. Este artigo tem como objeto de análise os discursos acerca do desenvolvimento socioemocional, veiculados por meio das revistas de ‘educação familiar’ publicadas em Portugal, entre 1945 e 1958, período em que se assiste a uma maior preocupação, por parte de médicos e educadores, com a preservação da saúde mental da criança. A análise realizada permitiu compreender que o desenvolvimento socioemocional é construído, pelos colaboradores das revistas, como algo problemático, cuja normalidade é constantemente ameaçada pelas ações incorretas dos pais. Tal constitui um poderoso argumento para uma crescente intervenção dos peritos psi na vida familiar, que se vão constituir, durante a segunda metade do século XX, em elementos centrais do processo de governação da parentalidade e da infância

Nation-building by education statistics and data: a comparative perspective on school surveys in Switzerland, France, and Scotland

Survey-generated data and numbers displayed in statistics play a relevant role in nation-building. They do not simply reflect logical or nationally relevant knowledge related to the topic of the survey but are used for educational policy decisions and political governance and follow specific cultural concepts and categories, containing ideologies of social order accordingly. The Swiss example illustrates the importance attached to the “hard facts” during the planning phase of school reforms. The French case shows that the means of getting a statistical picture of the state of French primary education represented an important political gesture to create national awareness and mobilization in support of primary education. The Scottish educational statistics from the 1820s and 1830s show how education not only was used as an identifying feature for the Scottish nation, but also involved the danger of putting this nation at risk. Overall, the chapter illustrates how differently and context-dependently numbers and surveys were used to approach the common goal of strengthening national identity through schooling

Curated Landscapes: The Evolution of the Postcard Shot

This research examines traveling landscape-objects in tourist environments and their impact on cultural identity in America. Traveling landscape-objects include any form of tourist paraphernalia or representation of cultural landscapes. For these purposes, I studied different forms of tourist representation of the Natchez Trace Parkway, an entity of the National Park Service. Research areas include the content, location, and changing medium of traveling landscape-objects, while also addressing their meaning, frequency, quality, role in non-representational arenas, and the future of tourist representations. Methods include detailed cataloguing and analysis of over one thousand images of various shapes and forms ⎯ ranging from early illustrations of the Natchez Trace Parkway, to historic photographs, postcards and finally digital images found on flickr.com. Results suggest that we can identify prominent cultural landscape icons by acknowledging where tourists collected the most representations or traveling landscape-objects. In addition, the form or medium of traveling landscape-objects affects their meaning, frequency, and quality in that tourists value the tactile quality of representations. Lastly, the intrinsic value of representations (even in non-representational arenas) is confirmed, and their future secured
