Age-related depletion of estrogens and androgens is associated with an increase in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain pathology and diminished cognitive function. Here we investigated AD-associated molecular and cellular changes in brains of aged hypogonadal (hpg) male and female mice. hpg Mice have a spontaneous, inactivating genetic mutation in the GnRH gene resulting in lifelong deficiency of gonadotropins and gonadal sex hormones. Western blot analysis revealed low levels of amyloid precursor protein and high levels of presenilin 1, amyloid precursor protein C-terminal fragment, and beta-amyloid 42 in brains of aged male, but not female, hpg mice. Changes were confined to the hippocampus and were not evident in the cerebellum or other brain tissues. Male hpg mice tended to have lower levels of IL-1 beta protein than male littermate controls. Immunohistochemical staining of the basal forebrain revealed that male hpg mice had lower choline acetyltransferase levels per neuron compared with controls. These AD-like changes specific to male hpg mice supports a link between androgen depletion and the development of AD pathology

Contempt's Evaluative Presentation and Connection to Accountability

In this chapter, I defend a novel account of contempt’s evaluative presentation by synthesizing relevant psychological work (Rozin et al. 1999; Fischer and Roseman 2007; Fischer 2011; Hutcherson and Gross 2011) with philosophical insights (Mason 2003; Bell 2005; Abramson 2009; Bell 2013). I then show how a concern about contempt’s status as an emotion involved in holding people accountable can be helpfully addressed. Finally, I gesture at an account of why, when we feel contemptuous toward people, our accountability responses involve withdrawal and exclusion rather than approach and confrontation

Cinara tujafilina (del Guercio, 1909) - a new aphid record for Malta (Aphididae, Lachninae)

    Get PDF
The aphidofauna of the Maltese archipelago is currently composed of some one hundred recorded species (Mifsud & Pérez Hidalgo, 2011; Mifsud et al. 2011) of which only six species are associated with conifers. Of these, three species belong to the genus Cinara: C. maghrebica, C. palaestinensis (both recorded on Pinus halepensis) and C. cupressi (recorded on Cupressus sempervirens). Identification of a recently captured single alate viviparous female of Cinara, based on Binazzi & Scheurer (2009) and Nieto Nafría et al., (2003), proved to be Cinara (Cupressobium) tujafilina (del Guercio, 1909), a species not previously recorded from Malta.peer-reviewe

Vulnerability assessment of storm surges in the coastal area of Guangdong Province

    Get PDF
Being bordered by the South China Sea and with long coastline, the coastal zone of Guangdong Province is often under severe risk of storm surges, as one of a few regions in China which is seriously threatened by storm surges. This article systematically analyzes the vulnerability factors of storm surges in the coastal area of Guangdong (from Yangjing to Shanwei). Five vulnerability assessment indicators of hazard-bearing bodies are proposed, which are social economic index, land use index, eco-environmental index, coastal construction index, and disaster-bearing capability index. Then storm surge vulnerability assessment index system in the coastal area of Guangdong is established. Additionally, the international general mode about coastal vulnerability assessment is improved, and the vulnerability evolution model of storm surges in the coastal area of Guangdong is constructed. Using ArcGIS, the vulnerability zoning map of storm surges in the study region is drawn. Results show that there is the highest degree of storm surge vulnerability in Zhuhai, Panyu, and Taishan; second in Zhongshan, Dongguan, Huiyang, and Haifeng; third in Jiangmen, Shanwei, Yangjiang, and Yangdong; fourth in Baoan, Kaiping, and Enping; and lowest in Guangzhou, Shunde, Shenzhen, and Longgang. This study on the risk of storm surges in these coastal cities can guide the land use of coastal cities in the future, and provide scientific advice for the government to prevent and mitigate the storm surge disasters. It has important theoretical and practical significance

The Continuing Outburst of V1647~Orionis: Winter/Spring 2011 Observations

We present optical and near-IR observations of the young eruptive variable star V1647 Orionis which illuminates McNeil's Nebula. In late 2003, V1647 Ori was observed to brightened by around 5 mag to r'=17.7. In early 2006 the star faded back to its quiescent brightness of r'~23, however, in mid-2008 it brightened yet again by ~5 mag. Our new observations, taken in early 2011, show V1647 Ori to be in an elevated photometric state with an optical brightness similar to the value found at the start of the 2003 and 2008 outbursts. Optical images taken between 2008 and 2011 suggest that the star has remained in outburst from mid 2008 to the present. H-alpha and the far-red CaII triplet lines remain in emission with H-alpha possessing a significant P Cygni profile. A self-consistent study of the accretion luminosity and rate using data taken in 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2011, indicates that when bright, V1647 Ori has values of 16+-2 Lsun and 4+-2x10^-6 Msun/yr, respectively. We support the premise that the accretion luminosity and rate both declined by a factor 2-3 during the 5mag fading in 2007. However, a significant parts of the fading was due to either variable extinction or dust reformation. We discuss these new observations in relation to previous published data and the classification schemes for young eruptive variables.Comment: accepted, A

The Need for Culturally-Based Palliative Care Programs for African American Patients at End-of-life

    Get PDF
Patients facing life-threatening illness often experience unnecessary and preventable suffering including extreme and prolonged pain, psychological distress, as well as unsatisfactory communication with doctors, all of which result in enormous strain on patients and caregivers (Chochinov et al., 2009; Kamal et al., 2011; Morrison & Meier, 2011). It is common for needs in the physical, psychosocial and spiritual domains to be unmet (Zhukovsky, 2000). As a result, the last few weeks and months of life, and that of their loved ones, may be additionally burdened with physical, emotional and spiritual suffering. Palliative care programs, interdisciplinary care focused on relief of pain and other symptoms in support of best possible quality of life for patients with serious illness and their families, or consultations with palliative care experts where such team programs are not available, have been shown to reduce symptoms, alleviate suffering, improve doctor-patient communication and satisfaction with care, improve family satisfaction, and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of hospital services (Bakitas et al., 2009a; Bakitas et al., 2009b; Casarett et al., 2008; Lagman, Rivera, Walsh, LeGrand, & Davis, 2007; Morrison & Meier, 2011; O’Hara et al., 2010), as well as to be associated with hospital cost savings (Morrison et al., 2008; Morrison et al., 2011; Penrod et al., 2010). Palliative care consultations for inpatients have successfully identified unrecognized symptoms and unmet problems (Abrahm, Callahan, Rossetti, & Pierre, 1996; Bailey et al., 2005; Bascom, 1997; Kuin et al., 2004; Manfredi et al., 2000), and have been associated with lower use of ICUs (Elsayem et al., 2006; Norton et al., 2007), lower likelihood of dying in ICU (Elsayem et al., 2006), lower costs of care (Penrod et al., 2006; Smith et al., 2003), and improvement in care processes, including medication prescribing and documenting patient goals for care(Bailey et al., 2005; Higginson et al., 2002; Higginson et al., 2003)

A Change in the Lightcurve of Kuiper Belt Contact Binary (139775) 2001 QG298

    Get PDF
New observations show that the lightcurve of Kuiper belt contact binary (139775) 2001 QG298 has changed substantially since the first observations in 2003. The 2010 lightcurve has a peak-to-peak photometric of range \Deltam{2010}=0.7\pm0.1 mag, significantly lower than in 2003, \Deltam{2003}=1.14\pm0.04 mag. This change is most simply interpreted if 2001 QG298 has an obliquity near 90 deg. The observed decrease in \Deltam is caused by a change in viewing geometry, from equator-on in 2003 to nearly 16 deg (the orbital angular distance covered by the object between the observations) off the equator in 2010. The 2003 and 2010 lightcurves have the same rotation period and appear in phase when shifted by an integer number of full rotations, also consistent with high obliquity. Based on the new 2010 lightcurve data, we find that 2001 QG298 has an obliquity {\epsilon}=90\pm30 deg. Current estimates of the intrinsic fraction of contact binaries in the Kuiper belt are debiased assuming that these objects have randomly oriented spins. If, as 2001 QG298, KBO contact binaries tend to have large obliquities, a larger correction is required. As a result, the abundance of contact binaries may be larger than previously believed.Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal (2011 July 18
