    The influence of digitisation and timing errors on the estimation of tidal components at Split (Adriatic Sea)

    International audienceThe paper comprises the calculations of amplitudes and phases of tidal harmonic constituents, performed on hourly sea level data recorded at the Split tide gauge in the period 1957-2001. Interannual changes in all constituents have been detected, stronger in phases than in amplitudes. For example, the estimated change in M2 amplitude and phase is 22% (1.31 cm) and 24.9° between the 1962?1978 and 1957?1961 periods, respectively. Some of the differences are generated artificially throughout the measurements (clock errors, positioning and stretching of a chart) and within the digitising procedure, rather than by natural processes and changes (e.g. changes in mean sea level). This is the reason why the M2 and K1 amplitudes were recomputed with 3?4 mm larger values using newer software, thereby decreasing their standard deviation by 60?70% in the 1986?1995 period. Artificial errors may be reduced by the upgrading of digitising software; however, most of the errors still remain in the series. These errors may have repercussions when trying to explain some unusual findings: the energy of de-tided sea level series at the M2 tidal period (12.4 h) has been assumed previously to be a result of nonlinear coupling, but it may be caused, at least partly, by timing errors in the time series

    Parameter tuning for enhancing inter-subject emotion classification in four classes for vr-eeg predictive analytics

    The following research describes the potential in classifying emotions using wearable EEG headset while using a virtual environment to stimulate the responses of the users. Current developments on emotion classification have always steered towards the use of a clinical-grade EEG headset with a 2D monitor screen for stimuli evocations which may introduce additional artifacts or inaccurate readings into the dataset due to users unable to provide their full attention from the given stimuli even though the stimuli presentated should have been advantageous in provoking emotional reactions. Furthermore, the clinical-grade EEG headset requires a lengthy duration to setup and avoiding any hindrance such as hairs hindering the electrodes from collecting the brainwave signals or electrodes coming loose thus requiring additional time to work to fix the issue. With the lengthy duration of setting up the EEG headset, the user may expereince fatigue and become incapable of responding naturally to the emotion being presented from the stimuli. Therefore, this research introduces the use of a wearable low-cost EEG headset with dry electrodes that requires only a trivial amount of time to set up and a Virtual Reality (VR) headset for the presentation of the emotional stimuli in an immersive VR environment which is paired with earphones to provide the full immersive experience needed for the evocation of the emotion. The 360 video stimuli are designed and stitched together according to the arousal-valence space (AVS) model with each quadrant having an 80-second stimuli presentation period followed by a 10-second rest period in between quadrants. The EEG dataset is then collected through the use of a wearable low-cost EEG using four channels located at TP9, TP10, AF7, AF8. The collected dataset is then fed into the machine learning algorithms, namely KNN, SVM and Deep Learning with the dataset focused on inter-subject test approaches using 10-fold cross-validation. The results obtained found that SVM using Radial Basis Function Kernel 1 achieved the highest accuracy at 85.01%. This suggests that the use of a wearable low-cost EEG headset with a significantly lower resolution signal compared to clinical-grade equipment which utilizes only a very limited number of electrodes appears to be highly promising as an emotion classification BCI tool and may thus spur up open up myriad practical, affordable and cost-friendly solutions in applying to the medical, education, military, and entertainment domains

Huang, C. Weng, Pooling spaces and non-adaptive pooling designs, Discrete Mathematics 282 (2004) 163–169] for a systematic way of constructing pooling designs; note that geometric lattices are among pooling spaces. This paper attempts to draw possible connections from finite geometry and distance regular graphs to pooling spaces: including the projective spaces, the affine spaces, the attenuated spaces, and a few families of geometric lattices associated with the orbits of subspaces under finite classical groups, and associated with d-bounded distance-regular graphs

    Literature Review of the Effectiveness of Using Aggregate Planing in the Msme Industry

    This research investigates the effectiveness of using Aggregate Planning in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) industry. Through a literature review using national and international scientific journal articles from 2018-2023, this research identified three main approaches to aggregate planning: Level Strategy, Chase Strategy, and Mixed Strategy. Level Strategy maintains production levels at a constant level, using inventory as a buffer to deal with fluctuations in demand. Chase Strategy adjusts production directly to market demand, minimizing inventory and carrying costs. Mixed Strategy, a combination of Chase Strategy and Level Strategy, combines the flexibility of Chase Strategy with the stability of Level Strategy to optimize production and inventory costs. This research describes how MSMEs in the children's clothing industry implement these three strategies. In Level Strategy, production is kept at a constant level, using inventory as a buffer. In the Chase Strategy, production is matched directly to demand, reducing inventory and carrying costs. In Mixed Strategy, the combination of strategies allows flexible response to demand fluctuations, minimizing inventory costs. The calculation results show that using Mixed Strategy allows companies to optimize production, reduce inventory costs, and respond quickly to variations in market demand. The total costs during this period were the result of production costs, inventory costs, overtime costs, and worker salaries, reaching a total of IDR 124,900,000. This research provides insight into how MSMEs can utilize aggregate planning with various strategies to increase their operational efficiency and flexibility in facing market dynamics

In this paper, we propose another method and obtain a family of pooling designs with surprisingly high degree of error correction based on a finite set. Given the numbers of items and pools, the error-tolerant property of our designs is much better than that of Macula's designs when the size of the set is large enough

    IoT: smart garbage monitoring using android and real time database

    Every single day, garbage is always produced and sometimes, due to the unbalance between high volume produced and the garbage volume transported to the landfill; it then leads to the buildup. To prevent any negative impact on environment, a system is needed to support the waste management process. Smart Garbage Monitoring System consists of two parts: portable garbage can and monitoring application using android smartphone. The use of ultrasonic sensor, GPS and GSM Module on the garbage can aims to provide the data on the garbage and send it to the real time database, in which the data will be processed by the monitoring application on smartphone to determine the time of garbage transport purposely to prevent any buildup. The system doesn't need a server to process, because the entire process of will be run by android application on a smartphone. Test results showed the capability of the system in monitoring the garbage can with the minimum distance between the wastes by three meters. The information on the height level of garbage can be synchronized in real time to smartphone, with an average delay on the EDGE network of 4.57 seconds, HSPA+ of 4.52 seconds and LTE of 3.85 seconds

    The Walking Brain: factors influencing human gait

    Human walking is a standardized, repeatable and rhythmic locomotor act, with biomechanical patterns reported as roughly common to all healthy individuals. However, some gait patterns could be affected by cognitive, social and cultural factors. This mini-review aims at investigating top-down related differences in walking healthy patterns due to the above factors. The reviewed literature reported that socio-economic factors are at the basis of differences in pedestrian walking speed, related to the pace of life: faster speed was found in industrialized countries than in developing ones. Furthermore, it was suggested that the ancient division between men and women in hunters and gatherers, respectively, could be at the basis of gender visual differences and, in turn, in upper body movements during walking, with women walking with a more stable head. Interestingly, changes in gait speed did not affect cortical resources needed for spatial cognition, whereas a cognitive task may affect the gait speed. The most reliable parameters, poorly affected by psycho-social factors, resulted the symmetry of limb movements and the ratio between stance and swing duration. The latter was found close to the irrational number called golden ratio, providing a fractal structure to human gait cycle. Both these parameters are at the basis of the harmony of human walking, a feature maintained also in presence of top-down driven gait modifications
