Linguistic Equivalence of the Hebrew Term Eden in Slavic Translations of the Bible

The authors study different equivalents of the Hebrew word Eden in selected old and new Slavic translations of the Bible. The equivalents of this lexeme have been excerpted from several Slavic translations of the Bible, which were selected on the basis of diverse criteria. The translations are presented chronologically and old translations are opposed to the new ones. They represent three groups of Slavic languages: West Slavic, East Slavic and South Slavic and are connected with the base of translation, i.e. the original text and/or Greek or Latin text. They can also be classified according to religious denomination and the strategy of the translation.The observation of those equivalents enables us to see not only their variety and mutual influence among translations but also the struggle of Slavic translators with a very difficult language matter. Many factors were important in that struggle: genetic and structural distances between Semitic and Slavic languages, different perceptions of reality in distant cultures, the discrepancy between biblical and Slavonic realities and the influence of religious denomination. Another important factor was the state of biblical knowledge at the time – incomparably poorer in the case of the oldest Slavic translations in comparison to modern ones

Word formation in selected grammar books for teaching Polish as a foreign language

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza zagadnień słowotwórczych prezentowanych w gramatykach do nauczania języka polskiego jako obcego. Analizie poddano zasób prezentowanych zagadnień oraz ich stronę graficzną. Gramatyka języka polskiego. Podręcznik dla cudzoziemców B. Bartnickiej i H. Satkiewicz jest za trudna dla obcokrajowca ze względu na skomplikowany styl naukowy zastosowany przy opisie zjawisk. W Odkrywamy język polski L. Madelskiej i M. Warchoł-Schlottmann pojawiają się błędy, dotyczące często nieprawidłowego zaklasyfikowania derywatów do kategorii słowotwórczych. Może to wprowadzać bałagan w słownikach umysłowych uczących się. Gramatyka języka polskiego dla cudzoziemców Z. Kalety nie uwzględnia natomiast zagadnień słowotwórczych. Słowotwórstwo, choć pomijane często przez polskich glottodydaktyków, odgrywa bardzo ważną rolę w procesie nauczania/uczenia się języka polskiego jako obcego. Derywacja jest jednym z najważniejszych procesów powstawania nowych słów. Zmiany językowe w dużej mierze to zmiany leksykalne. Słowotwórstwo pomaga porządkować leksykę (klasyfikować powstające słowa do odpowiednich kategorii, a tym samym wyznaczać znaczenie). Formacje słowotwórcze są również świadectwem językowego postrzegania rzeczywistości przez użytkowników danego języka.The purpose of this article is to analyze derivational issues presented in the grammar books for teaching Polish as a foreign language. Both the variety of issues presented and their graphic design were analyzed. Gramatyka języka polskiego. Podręcznik dla cudzoziemców by B. Bartnicka and H. Satkiewicz transpired to be too difficult for a foreigner because of the complicated scientific style used when describing analyzed phenomena. In Odkrywamy język polski by L. Madelska and M. Warchol-Schlottmann errors appeared, often connected with incorrect classification of derivatives to derivational categories, which may cause chaos in learners` mental dictionaries. Gramatyka języka polskiego dla cudzoziemców by Z. Kaleta does not include derivational issues at all. Word formation, despite being often overlooked by Polish teachers, plays a vital role in the process of teaching / learning Polish as a foreign language. Derivation is one of the most important processes of the formation of new words. Linguistic changes are lexical changes to a great extent. Word formation helps organize lexis (to classify the new words to appropriate categories, and thus determine their meaning). Derivational formations also show the linguistic perception of reality by the users of a given language

Keywords management in information indexing and retrieval Abst ract This article concerns selected issues relating to the methods of vocabulary management in the processes of information indexing and retrieval, based on the use of keywords. The aim is to present the results of a review of literature on the subject, published mainly after 2010, and to discuss the state of research and prospects in this field. The study relies on critical analysis of literature on the subject. The obtained picture of the research field in question is an important stage in designing further studies in this area.
