    Islamic Studies: A Transdisciplinary Approach

    Get PDF
Integration of religious sciences (‘ulum al-din) in the traditional sense, Islamic thought (fikr al-Islami) produced by Muslim scholars and leaders, and Islamic studies (dirasat Islamiyah) in a wider sense, includes the study of Islamic practice reflected in a variety of Islamic cultures subsumed under an Islamic civilization. As such, integration between revealed and acquired knowledge becomes important. This integration can occur not only because of a synergy between the treasures contained in classical Islamic sciences (turath) and contemporary scholarly discourse, but also because of the scientific enrichment afforded by the development of the transdisciplinary approach. Such approach uses specially constructed methodology from as many disciplines as needed to solve complex problems faced by the world and its inhabitants today such as climate change, financial crisis, natural disasters, political upheavals, ideological violence, and disenfranchised majority or minority. Ali Shariati’s concept of rausyanfikr (enlightened thinker) is especially relevant for the this methodology, as such thinkers do not only ‘discover things’ or ‘present facts’, but also ‘find truth’ and ‘create history’. Using existing literature, this paper examines the transdisciplinary approach, shows its relevance for Islamic studies, and highlights the concept of cosmopolitan Islam and ‘enlightened’ Muslim intellectuals

The aging of elderly people in the transdiciplinary approaches has been described on the results of the analysis of the scientific literature. That thanks to the scientific achievements in different spheres the human life expectancy increases thus aging becomes an active participation process and due to the increase of the number of elderly people in the world a new branch of science – gerontology develops that turns its attention to researching the aging processes and the possibilities of lengthening the life expectancy; it includes three main research approaches – biological that deals with functional and morphological changes in human organ systems, psychological (changes in the sensory perception and mental processes) and sociological – human role and the changes of their interaction in the social structure. Aging is a regressive process, which is also influenced by negative and harmful factors that decrease the adaptation abilities of the organism.  Gradually people reach a general status of inability. Thus the biological psychological and social aging is mutually closely connected. The authors has developed the theoretical framework  on the studies of the aging theories

Neurohermeneutics A Transdisciplinary Approach to Literature

    Get PDF
Summary In the epistemic frame of the biocultural turn and of the neuroaesthetics, we have developed neurohermeneutics as an approach to literature that aims at contributing to the current debate about the linkage between literary, cognitive and neuroscientific studies, focusing on the relationship between mindbrain processes mirrored in the formal features of the text and the strategies activated by the author in a text in order to guide the reader in imagining, emotionally feeling and cognitively getting meanings out of the literary experience. The aim of the neurohermeneutical approach is to grasp and describe phenomenologically the mirroring process between the two extremes of the literary experience, i.e. the writer's creative process as it is mirrored in the formal features of the literary work and the reader's imaginative reconfiguration of the text, and what they share in common. The reader revives the mental imaginative processes of the author by creating his/her unrepeatable individual experiences of the text and subjectively redesigning it in an endless loop of features that trigger the imagination and its creative potential both while writing and by reading literature

The purpose of this research is to discuss the opportunities of science and technology in hadith research. This research method uses qualitative research through literature study with a content analysis approach. The results and discussion of this research include the hadith science methodology, the development of the hadith validity method and the hadith text criticism method with a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach, and scientific and technological opportunities in hadith research for the need for integration of science. The conclusion of this study is that research on hadith with a transdisciplinary approach opens wide opportunities for science and technology that are currently developing for the realization of the integration of science. This study recommends the importance of applying a transdisciplinary approach to science and technology opportunities in the development of hadith research in Islamic higher educatio

Engineering graduation projects in a transdisciplinary approach

    Get PDF
This paper presents some project themes proposed by the authors and the methodology adopted in its supervision, in a transdisciplinary approach. We describe the projects and discuss the most relevant aspects of this approach, from the technical and pedagogical points of view. The stronger points of this methodology are some similarities with the environment that recent graduated students might find in the employment market. Balancing the pros and cons we conclude that due to the project interdependencies, benefits are mainly on technical skills improvement and in mutual responsibilities to accomplish tasks on schedule

Educating for urban sustainability: A transdisciplinary approach

    Get PDF
An understanding of sustainability issues should be a key component of degree programmes. It is widely regarded as being a central attribute to professional practice and responsible global citizenship, arguably more so for the training of teachers since they potentially influence their students. This issue was brought to the fore when responsibility for delivering the 'design and the environment' course was transferred to the building discipline at the University of Newcastle in Australia as a result of restructuring. The attractiveness of the subject as an elective, the need to make it accessible to distance learning students and the desirability of applying transdisciplinary approaches to solving environmental problems presented the course designers with both challenges and opportunities, particularly in devising an assessment context within which students from multiple disciplines could be exposed to, and learn from each other's professional environmental evaluation norms. This paper describes an innovative holistic, multi-criteria problem-solving course design that allows a diverse mix of undergraduates to develop a transdisciplinary understanding of sustainability issues through the use of learning contracts. It reports the experiences of staff and students involved with the course, highlighting the beneficial outcomes
