The presence of Greek Personal Names in the Latin in inscriptions coming from the Iberian Peninsula is considerable. Furthermore, from the evidence found in religious centres it is clear that these inscriptions comprise a broad chronological period reaching to Medieval times. This paper shows that the Phonetic and Morphological adaptation of these names was very limited in Latin. Consequently, the fact that the various forms of these Greek names did not expand outside the closed community which bore them is justified.

The aim of this paper is to apply, as a way of interpretation of Virgil's Fourth Bucolic, verses 18-25, the idea that one of his "inspiration" sources could have been the visual and iconic universe in which the poet flourished. Taking into account the argumentation about different types of ekphraseis, we try to define what we call "implicit ekphrasis", that is, a kind of ekphrasis not produced by isolated artistic objects, but another one based on concepts, in order to apply it to our verses's commentary. The results could allow us to say that the icons which, at Rome, symbolized aeternitas, aurea aetas, felicitas temporum, tempora anni, etc., permit the poet (among other inspiration sources) to build his message of a better time through the puer nascens's metaphor
Quantitative Metathesis in the Dialect of Cos: Ionic Influence or Local Feature?
argumentos que muestran que se trata con toda probabilidad de un proceso autóctono de la islaIn this paper the author discusses the adjective τέλεως and the «quantitative metathesis» of
the type βασιλῆος > βασιλέως in the Ancient Greek Doric dialect of Cos. After presenting
the available data, the author refutes the hypothesis that explain this feature as an influence
of the nearby Ionic dialect and he provides arguments that prove that the «quantitative metathesis»
is a local feature of the dialect of the islan
In this paper the author offers an interpretation of
the word acerbus, in literary texts and metrical
inscriptions (where a specialized meaning for
premature death is always found), according to the
Metaphor Contemporary Theory (MCT). The
study of acerbus within the frame of MCT allows
us to propose a satisfactory translation of this
difficult term, in both literary and epigraphic texts.
Finally, the comparative study of acerbus in
literature and in the Carmina Latina Epigraphica
gives us strong arguments to clarify the interesting
subject of loci similes in both kind of texts.
In the designation of human beings, the Homeric poems show different expressions of Cause, the use of which is determined by their grade of dependence of the verb and by their meaning itself. Their use as the second argument of the verb makes possible the occurrence of the Genitive,
the ancient Indoeuropean Ablative, without any preposition; their use as a satellite
leads to the occurrence of prepositional phrases. Both as an argument and as a satellite the
meaning of Causal expressions with a human referent can be classified in Homer in three subtypes
within the continuum uniting the notions Cause and Agent: involuntary Cause, Responsible
without Intention and Responsible with Intention
Apologizing in Latin. The Speech Act of Apology in Plautus’ and Terence’s Comedies
of «apology» in the synchronic stage reflected
in the comedies written by Plautus and Terence.
This allows to deepen the understanding of the
expression of linguistic politeness in Latin. The
linguistic act of apology is defined as the attempt
of repairing an offence committed against the addressee,
in order to recover the former situation of
equilibrium. Thus, apologies are inherently polite
speech acts that threaten the speaker’s social face,
while protecting the addressee’s public self image.
The study offers an overview of the expressive
strategies for apologizing that can be recognized in
the abovementioned works, taking into consideration
the contexts of use and the differences caused
by the speaker’s profil
Socrus non socra (App. Pr. 170). The Hispanic Epigraphic Dossier
Hispania citerior). The use of socra instead of socrus is common in the Latin epigraphy of the Principate. In the whole Roman Empire, textual evidences of socra/socera surpass the testimonies of socrus. In the light of the expression socrus non socra collected in the Appendix Probi, are discussed the five testimonies of the word socra known today in the Roman inscriptions of the Iberian Peninsula. The article includes a textual correction of a Roman stela from Campo Arcís (Requena, Valencia. Hispania citerior)
The Roman Law of Talion and its correlative origin: antiquity and innovation
for an eye». However, Roman law is far from being
as concise and strict as that of the Bible. Whilst
not forgetting the option of membrum pro membro,
the interpretation of Latin examples tells us
that punishments tended to be comparable and not
equal, materially speaking, to the harm caused. The
linguistic analysis of talio, derived from the indefinite
talis and the correlative structure (quale scelus,
talis poena) in which it appears, leads us to see this
feminine substantive of action as a neologism of
proportional reference that encouraged Roman law
to evolve towards substitute punishments that were
less gory. In order to understand the spirit of the Law of Talion, we must take into consideration its
form, which above all is made up of the indefinite
talis as a correlative of qualis referring to the damage
or harm cause
From a rethorical point of view, Mamertinus’ gratiarum actio to Julian Emperor is a very particular text. A close reading of the early writings by Julian shows how the gratiarum actio relies heavily on some of Julian’s philosophical and rethorical doctrines. The concepts of ἀρετή-uirtus, δίκη-iustitia, σωφροσύνη- moderatio and ciuilitas appear as the nuclear points of the panegyric: Julian’s idea of a perfect ruler shines in ἀρετή- uirtus, δίκη-iustitia, σωφροσύνη- moderatio; with ciuilitas, the traditional virtue of roman emperors Mamertinus claims the History’s favourable judgment for Julian.
