    Study of the immature stages of two species of the biting midge genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

    Pupa of Culicoides insignis Lutz, 1913, and larva and pupa of Culicoides bambusicola Lutz, 1913 are fully described. They are illustrated and photographed using binocular microscope, phase-contrast stereoscope at oil immersion and scanning electronic microscopy, from material collected in Corrientes and Misiones provinces, Argentina. Palatum, maxilla and hypopharynx of the fourth instar larva of C. bambusicola as well as the cephalothoracic sensilla and sensillar pattern of the fi rst and fourth abdominal segment of the pupa are described for both species. The immatures of C. bambusicola are compared with Culicoides debilipalpis Lutz, 1913.     Bilateral Differentiation of Color and Morphology in the Larval and Pupal Stages of \u3ci\u3ePapilio Glaucus\u3c/i\u3e (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae)

    A sharply delineated, bilateral differentiation of color patterns and morphology were observed in a final (5th) instar larva of a subspecies backcross of a female Papilio glaucus glaucus with a hybrid male (P. g. glaucus x P. g. canadensis). Color and morphological differences were detectable in the pupa as well. In addition, a bilateral size difference was evident in both the pupa and the resulting adult butterfly. Such observations within a single living individual attest to the bilateral independence (also evident in perfect gynandromorphs) and general flexibility of the developmental control in this species of Lepidoptera

Special needs range from problems of mental or emotional anguish, care, disability or chronic illnesses. My interest in this study is on how these special needs impact on the functioning of the family and family dynamics. Theatrical representation and audience participation is at the heart of exploring the empowering role of applied theatre to engage family members in expressing their difficulties and discussing their issues together

    Multi-objective optimization shapes ecological variation

    Ecological systems contain a huge amount of quantitative variation between and within species and locations, which makes it difficult to obtain unambiguous verification of theoretical predictions. Ordinary experiments consider just a few explanatory factors and are prone to providing oversimplified answers because they ignore the complexity of the factors that underlie variation. We used multi-objective optimization (MO) for a mechanistic analysis of the potential ecological and evolutionary causes and consequences of variation in the life-history traits of a species of moth. Optimal life-history solutions were sought for environmental conditions where different life stages of the moth were subject to predation and other known fitness-reducing factors in a manner that was dependent on the duration of these life stages and on variable mortality rates. We found that multi-objective optimal solutions to these conditions that the moths regularly experience explained most of the life-history variation within this species. Our results demonstrate that variation can have a causal interpretation even for organisms under steady conditions. The results suggest that weather and species interactions can act as underlying causes of variation, and MO acts as a corresponding adaptive mechanism that maintains variation in the traits of organisms

    Se describe, fotografía e ilustra la exuvia pupal de Mallochohelea termophila (Spinelli), en especial sobre la base de la serie-tipo. Las pupas de la serie-tipo fueron recolectadas mediante pinzas en un arroyo termal, adheridas a rocas, aproximadamente a 200 m del manatial y las pupas de Uruguay mediante el uso de un cucharón tanto en ambientes lóticos como lénticos. Ellas fueron criadas hasta adultos en el laboratorio. Ésta es la primera descripción detallada de una pupa de una especie de Mallochohelea y el primer registro de la especie para Uruguay. Se destacan semejanzas y diferencias con las pupas de Neobezzia.The pupal exuvia of Mallochohelea termophila (Spinelli) is redescribed, photographed and illustrated mainly based on the type-series. Pupae of the type-series were collected with forceps from a thermal stream and were attached to rocks about 200 m from the spring head. Pupae from Uruguay were collected with a dipper in lotic and lentic environments. They were reared to adults in the laboratory. This is the first detailed pupal description of a species of Mallochohelea, and the first record of this species from Uruguay.     A review of the genus Agapetus Curtis (Trichoptera: Glossosomatidae) in eastern and central North America, with description of 12 new species

    Twenty-nine species of caddisflies in the genus Agapetus Curtis in eastern and central North America are reviewed. Twelve are described as new species: Agapetus aphallus (known only from females); Agapetus baueri, Agapetus flinti, Agapetus harrisi, Agapetus hesperus, Agapetus ibis, Agapetus kirchneri, Agapetus meridionalis, Agapetus pegram, Agapetus ruiteri, Agapetus stylifer, and Agapetus tricornutus. Agapetus rossi Denning 1941 is recognized as a junior subjective synonym of Agapetus walkeri (Betten and Mosely 1940), new synonym. A key to males is provided, and species’ distributions are mapped

    The study of the Walmer Links Finance Linked Individual Subsidy (FLISP) is the response to the housing backlogs that have been experienced by the Port Elizabeth area. The ownership programme is the first of its kind in the area and has been met with scepticism, revolt and acceptance as the neighbouring township of Walmer and the nearby suburbs had mixed feelings about the project. The overall feeling and experience of the new FLISP owners far exceeds the scepticism around the project. The project also brought racial integration and improved the quality of life for the poor. It also seems as though the success of the project will be the determinant factor of whether it can rolled out to other provinces as an approach to development and poverty alleviation

    Liothula omnivora, one of the two known casemoths endemic to New Zealand, belongs to the Lepidopteran family Psychidae. It is distributed throughout the country, and can be found on a large number of host plants (see later). The other N.Z. casemoth, Orophora concolor, has been found on Wild Irishman and cassinias in the river beds of the South Island (Miller, 1955). L. omnivora was first described by Fereday in 1878, but Meyrick (1890) transferred it to the genus Oiketicus (Guilding, 1827) mis-spelling it Oeceticus. Dr. Allan Watson (1967, pers. comm.) of the British Museum (Natural History) considers that this species should belong in the genus Liothula and the writer has adopted Watson's view in calling it L. omnivora. The type of L. omnivora is in the Canterbury Museum, Christchurch (Entomologische Beihefte 4, Horn and Kahle, 1937). Descriptions of the external morphology of the adult male and female have been made by Fereday (1878), Meyrick (1890) and Hudson (1928). Fereday and Hudson also described the larva, the pupa has been described by Hudson and Quail (1901), and the appearance of the egg briefly noted by Hudson

    Fatty Acid Composition and Sensory Evaluation of The Meat of Broilers Fed Silkworm (Bombyx mori L) Pupa Dietary Supplementation

    Abstract.  The effects of silkworm pupa diets rich in n-3 fatty acids on fatty acid composition and quality of broiler meat were investigated. Diets containing varying amounts of dried or fresh pupa were prepared (1) basal contained 10 % fishmeal (control), (2) basal plus 10% of silkworm pupa-dried (SP), (3) basal plus 20% of silkworm pupa-dried (SP), (4) basal plus 5% of silkworm pupa-dried (SP) + 5% of silkworm pupa-fresh (SF), (5) basal plus 10% of silkworm pupa-dried (SP) + 10% of silkworm pupa-fresh (SF). One hundred and ninety five CPC 707 breed chickens of 21-days old were fed with the experimental diets. The prominent fatty acids in thigh meat tissue were oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, stearic acid, and α-linolenic acid. Both the total amounts of n-3 fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids increased, while the total amount of n-6 fatty acids decreased with increasing levels of silkworm meal in the feed, resulting in an increase in the n-3/n-6 ratio. There were no significant differences in the effects of the treatments on the sensory quality of cooked breast meat, with the exception of taste improvement, which significantly lower in the group that was fed a basal diet containing 5% each of dried and fresh pupa. In conclusion, application of silkworm pupa as fat source in feed could improve the taste and quality of broiler meat. Keywords: Silkworm pupa, omega-3, broiler, meat quality, fatty acid composition  Abstrak: Silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) pupa adalah by-product dari hasil industri ulat sutra yang mengandung omega-3 asam alpha linolenat (18:3-n3) tinggi, sekitar 40% dari total asam lemak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi pengaruh pemberian silkworm pupa pada diet ayam broiler dalam komposisi asam lemak dan kualitas daging ayam. Lima jenis diet yang digunakan adalah (1) basal yang mengandung 10% tepung ikan (control), (2) basal yang mengandung 10% pupa kering (SP), (3) basal mengandung 20% pupa kering (SP), (4) basal mengandung 5% pupa kering (SP) dan 5% pupa basah (SF), dan (5) basal mengandung 10% pupa kering (SP) dan 10% pupa basah (SF). Penelitian ini menggunakan 195 ayam broiler jantan strain CPC 707 berumur 21 hari, pemberian diet dilaksanakan selama 21 hari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa  asam oleat, palmitat, linoleat, stearat dan alpha linolenat merupakan asam-asam lemak yang dominan ditemukan pada daging paha ayam. Jumlah total omega-3 maupun asam lemak tak jenuh (PUFA) meningkat, sementara jumlah omega-6 menurun dengan penambahan silkworm pupa pada diet, menyebabkan perbandingan atau ratio n-3/n-6 menjadi tinggi. Dalam hal kualitas daging dada ayam, tidak ada perbedaan yang nyata  terlihat diantara kelima perlakuan diet, dengan pengecualian pada rasa daging ayam menunjukkan nilai sensory yang rendah pada perlakuan yang mengandung 5% pupa kering dan 5% pupa basah.     The last instar larva and pupa of Ora depressa (Coleoptera: Scirtidae), a marsh beetle with underwater pupation

    In this contribution we describe and illustrate for the first time, detailed morphology and chaetotaxy of the last instar larva and the pupa of Ora depressa (Fabricius, 1801), and provide diagnostic characters and information on its biology. The last instar larva of O. depressa exhibits the characters traditionally recognized as diagnostic of the genus, i.e. the tip of the mandible obtuse, and the fourth maxillary palpomere long, almost as long as third palpomere. Ora depressa is characterized by a broadly elliptical body, which is widest at the metanotum, being brownish testaceous in color with several brown spots, having the dorsal surface mostly covered with numerous grooved scale-like setae and also several ungrooved scale-like setae, hair-like setae, club-like setae and pore-like sensilla distributed in a specific pattern, and the femur and tibiotarsus bearing a row of natatorial setae. The last instar larva of Ora depressa can be distinguished from those of the other known species of the genus by lobes of clypeolabrum being as long as wide and socket bristles with 2–6 inner teeth. The pupa of O. depressa differs from those of the other known species of the genus in the absence of pronotal horns and by the place where pupation occurs. Ora depressa pupates underwater, hanging from water’s surface with the aid of the laterally expanded pronotum which bears hydrophobic setation along the lateral margins.Fil: Libonatti, María Laura.
