    Get PDF
This purpose of this project was to determine peoples’ opinions of BP’s post 2010 oil spill recovery effort. The researcher examined 65 faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi in order to determine their beliefs, attitudes, and intentions concerning different elements of the BP oil spill recovery effort. The researcher found that there is an overall negative opinion concerning the economic, ecological, and overall recovery effort aspects of the spill. This research suggests that BP still has some work to do in order to restore the gulf coast like they promised

In recent years, trade traffic through Tanjung Priok Port has always increased. An increase in the economy always has a negative impact on the environment. Because every ship that docks has the potential to dump waste in the port area. Most of the causes of marine pollution in Indonesia are caused by ship waste, of course this is related to the lack of awareness of ship operators about the cleanliness of the environment around the port. Related to this, this research was conducted to plan an environmentally friendly Oil Spill Recovery Boat, by using electric power for navigation and communication needs. Oil spill control vessel design. This Oil Spill Recovery Boat has a catamaran hull designed using the Maxsurf application. The method used to determine the main size of the Oil Spill Recovery Boat is linear regression, namely by using comparison vessels that have been compiled and then adjusted to the number of oil spills in the research area. By using Maxsurf software, the main dimensions obtained are L = 10.0 m, B = 4.42 m, H = 1.34 m and T = 0.61 m.. This ship has a crew of 3 people.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2013.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references.Widespread use of petrochemicals often leads to accidental releases in aquatic environments, occasionally with disastrous results. Recent advances in the understanding of selectively wetting surfaces have led to the development of functionalized steel meshes with hydrophobic and oleophilic surfaces. These meshes can perform oil/water separation in situ, continuously, via capillary action. The goal of this study is to determine the potential of hydrophobic meshes as oil spill recovery devices. A fabrication method was developed using steel mesh dip-coated in a hot solution of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in xylene. The mesh gained a rough, hydrophobic coating of LDPE, with tunable pore sizes and surface roughness. The coating was characterized using microscopy techniques and contact angle analysis, in order to identify surface features relevant to oil/water separation. Oil was found to persistently wet the mesh, attenuating any effects from roughness. Next, a key performance metric, the water breakthrough pressure, was predicted using a modified version of the Young-Laplace equation incorporating an unpinned meniscus. The model was successful for meshes with pore radii between 7 - 220 tm, which could hold back up to 40 cm of water. Finally, a bench-scale apparatus was built to test the oil permeate flux at steady state under capillary-driven flow. The mesh successfully recovered oil from the surface of a pool of water, with less than 1% water recovered by mass, with a representative flux of 1 L-m-²-s. These results were used to discuss implications for the feasibility of field-scale devices.by Daniel P. Prendergast.S.M

Like Oil and Water: The Past, Present, and Future of American Waterways Operators, Inc. v. Askew in the Ongoing Federal-State Relationship in Regulating Oil Spill Recovery

Federal and state attempts to regulate recovery for oil spill damages often go together as well as oil and water. Given the recent large-scale and well-publicized Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the federal-state relationship in regulating oil spill recovery has once again come to the forefront after spending nearly two decades on the backburner since the Exxon Valdez incident in 1989. However, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida (Middle District) was forced to deal with this federal-state relationship long before either of these events occurred. In 1971, the Middle District took up the case of American Waterways Operators, Inc. v. Askew, where it was asked by a conglomerate of shipping interests to consider whether the Florida Oil Spill Prevention and Pollution Control Act (Florida Act) was preempted by the federal Water Quality Improvement Act (Federal Act). In this instance, a three-judge panel of the Middle District held that the Florida Act was preempted and that Florida\u27s state statute was unconstitutional under Article III, Section 2, Clause 1 of the United States Constitution because the states surrendered to the federal government all power to enact substantive legislation relating to admiralty and maritime matters

Supramolecular Phase-Selective Gelation by Peptides Bearing Side-Chain Azobenzenes: Effect of Ultrasound and Potential for Dye Removal and Oil Spill Remediation

    Get PDF
Phase selective gelation (PSG) of organic phases from their non-miscible mixtures with water was achieved using tetrapeptides bearing a side-chain azobenzene moiety. The presence of the chromophore allowed PSG at the same concentration as the minimum gelation concentration (MGC) necessary to obtain the gels in pure organic phases. Remarkably, the presence of the water phase during PSG did not impact the thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of the corresponding organogels. In the case of miscible oil/water mixtures, the entire mixture was gelled, resulting in the formation of quasi-hydrogels. Importantly, PSG could be triggered at room temperature by ultrasound treatment of the mixture or by adding ultrasound-aided concentrated solution of the peptide in an oil-phase to a mixture of the same oil and water. Moreover, the PSG was not affected by the presence of salts or impurities existing in water from natural sources. The process could be scaled-up, and the oil phases (e.g., aromatic solvents, gasoline, diesel fuel) recovered almost quantitatively after a simple distillation process, which also allowed the recovery and reuse of the gelator. Finally, these peptidic gelators could be used to quantitatively remove toxic dyes from aqueous solutions

Gulf of Mexico oil blowout increases risks to globally threatened species

Fourteen marine species in the Gulf of Mexico are protected by the US Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. As the British Petroleum oil spill recovery and remediation proceed, species internationally recognized as having an elevated risk of extinction should also receive priority for protection and restoration efforts, whether or not they have specific legal protection. Forty additional marine species-unprotected by any federal laws-occur in the Gulf and are listed as threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List. The Red List assessment process scientifically evaluates species' global status and is therefore a key mechanism for transboundary impact assessments and for coordinating international conservation action. Environmental impact assessments conducted for future offshore oil and gas development should incorporate available data on globally threatened species, including species on the IUCN Red List. This consideration is particularly important because US Natural Resource Damage Assessments may not account for injury to highly migratory, globally threatened species. © 2011 by American Institute of Biological Sciences.
