Cognitive Neurosciene and Its Applications to Contemporary Acting Theory

I personally believe that anyone can be a performer so long as they have the determination, dedication, and refuse to take no for an answer. There are all kinds of training out there designed to help turn hopeful wannabes into the “stars” that we know them as, however, not every “star” we see has had this kind of training. We often hear of young actors like Jennifer Lawrence hailed for their “natural talent”. Does this mean there’s some kind of birth-right, a specific natural inclination or ability that makes someone a potentially great actor from the start? I will refer to this phenomenon as “natural talent”. In contrast stands “cultivatable talent” a talent which wasn’t necessarily a gift from the acting gods, but perhaps someone who started out with little promise and was able to acquire skills that could make them into a powerful actor. If the latter scenario exists, is there any kind of cap or ceiling to how much they can learn? My thesis will investigate the several different schools that I referenced above, a BA/BFA liberal arts program, an acting specific studio of one school of thought, an acting specific academy, and genre specific training (for my purposes I will investigate improvisational comedy training), investigating to what extent each of them is cultivating talent that didn’t come “natural” or merely honing natural talent that already existed on its own and as a result discover whether or not truly anyone can become a great actor

Anindito, Gusti Pindo Asa. 2013. Pengaruh Pemberian Ekstrak Biji Anggur (Vitis Vinifera L.) terhadap Motilitas dan Viabilitas Spermatozoa Tikus Putih (Rattus Norvegicus Strain Wistar) Jantan yang Di Beri Paparan Asap Rokok. Karya Tulis Akhir, Fakultas Kedokteran, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. Pembimbing: (1) dr. Moch. Aleq Sander M.Kes., Sp.B., FINACS (2) dr. Metode: Penelitian eksperimental dengan post test only control group design. Kelompok perlakuan 1 diberi ekstrak biji anggur sebanyak 0,9 mg/200 gBB/Hari, kelompok perlakuan 2 diberi ekstrak biji anggur 2,7 mg/200 g BB/Hari, dan kelompok perlakuan 3 diberi ekstrak biji anggur 5,4 mg/ 200gBB/hari. Pada hari ke 21, tikus akan dibius dengan menggunakan ether, kemudian dibedah untuk diambil vas deferen nya dan dibuat preparat dengan pengecatan eosin – nigrosin. Data diuji dengan One-Way ANOVA.

An Updated Midline Rule: Visual Callosal Connections Anticipate Shape and Motion in Ongoing Activity across the Hemispheres

It is generally thought that callosal connections (CCs) in primary visual cortices serve to unify the visual scenery parted in two at the vertical midline (VM). Here, we present evidence that this applies also to visual features that do not cross yet but might cross the VM in the future. During reversible deactivation of the contralateral visual cortex in cats, we observed that ipsilaterally recorded neurons close to the border between areas 17 and 18 receive selective excitatory callosal input on both ongoing and evoked activity. In detail, neurons responding well to a vertical Gabor patch moving away from the deactivated hemifield decreased prestimulus and stimulus-driven activity much more than those preferring motion toward the cooled hemifield. Further, activity of neurons responding to horizontal lines decreased more than the response to vertical lines. Embedding a single Gabor into a collinear line context selectively stabilized responses, especially when the context was limited to the intact hemifield. These findings indicate that CCs interconnect not only neurons coding for similar orientations but also for similar directions of motion. We conclude that CCs anticipate stimulus features that are potentially relevant for both hemifields (i.e., coherent motion but also collinear shape) because already prestimulus activity and activity to stimuli not crossing the VM revealed feature specificity. Finally, we hypothesize that intrinsic and callosal networks processing different orientations and directions are anisotropic close to the VM facilitating perceptual grouping along likely future motion or (shape) trajectories before the visual stimulus arrives

Effects of chronic administration of aqueous extract of alchornea cordifolia leaf commonly used in the treatment of diarrhoea, cough, gonorrhoea, chest pain and anemia on the kidney of adult wistar rats was investigated. Rats of both sexes (n=20), with an average weight of 200g were randomly assigned into test (n=10) and control (n=10) groups. Rats in the test group were given the aqueous extract of alchornea cordifolia leaf at a single dose of 250mg/kg body weight daily for thirty days through the orogastric tube administration while the control group received equal volume of distilled water through the same route and for the same period. Rats were fed with grower’s mash obtained from Edo Feeds and Flour Mill Limited, Ewu, Edo state, Nigeria. Rats were sacrificed by cervical dislocation method on the thirty-first day of the experiment and the kidney was carefully dissected out, dried, weighed, and quickly fixed in 10% formal saline for further routine histological study. Findings indicated that the kidney in the test group (group B) showed some level of distortion and disruption of the cytoarchitecture of the renal cortical structure with marked diffuse glomerulonephritis and an enlarged Bowman’s space as compared to the control group. Findings also indicated that there was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in weights (g) of the test kidney as compared to the control group. Chronic administration of aqueous extract of alchornea cordifolia leaf may therefore have an adverse effect on the kidney of adult wistar rats. It is recommended that further studies aimed at corroborating these observations be carried out. Keywords: Morphology effects, Alchornea cordifolia, Kidney, Wistar rats

AbstractEfavirenz is commonly used as part of the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1. The effects of chronic administration of efavirenz on the kidney of adult Wistar rats were investigated. The rats were divided into two groups, those given efavirenz (treatment) and those given water (control), both for 30 days. The animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation on Day 31 of the experiment and kidneys were dissected, weighed and quickly fixed in 10% formalin for histological analysis. The findings indicate that there was a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in weight and increase in relative weight of treated right and left kidneys compared to the control group. Kidneys in the treated group showed disruption of the cytoarchitecture of the renal cortical structure, diffuse glomerulonephritis with some cell congestion, and dilation of Bowman’s space compared to the control group. Chronic efavirenz administration may therefore have an adverse effect on the kidney function of adult Wistar rats. Further studies to corroborate these observations should be carried out
