Modern Approach for Designing and Solving Interval Estimated Linear Fractional Programming Models

    Get PDF
Optimization methods have been widely applied in statistics. In mathematical programming, the coefficients of the models are always categorized as deterministic values. However uncertainty always exists in realistic problems. Therefore, interval-estimated optimization models may provide an alternative choice for considering the uncertainty into the optimization models. In this aspect, this paper concentrates, the lower and upper values of interval estimated linear fractional programming model (IELFPM) are obtained by using generalized confidence interval estimation method. An IELFPM is a LFP with interval form of the coefficients in the objective function and all requirements. The solution of the IELFPM is also analyzed

Analysis of the efficiency of the linearization techniques for solving multi-objective linear fractional programming problems by goal programming

    Get PDF
This paper presents and analyzes the applicability of three linearization techniques used for solving multi-objective linear fractional programming problems using the goal programming method. The three linearization techniques are: (1) Taylor’s polynomial linearization approximation, (2) the method of variable change, and (3) a modification of the method of variable change proposed in [20]. All three linearization techniques are presented and analyzed in two variants: (a) using the optimal value of the objective functions as the decision makers’ aspirations, and (b) the decision makers’ aspirations are given by the decision makers. As the criteria for the analysis we use the efficiency of the obtained solutions and the difficulties the analyst comes upon in preparing the linearization models. To analyze the applicability of the linearization techniques incorporated in the linear goal programming method we use an example of a financial structure optimization problem

Using Data Envelopment Analysis to Evaluate Environmentally Conscious Tourism Management

    Get PDF
This paper discusses a methodology to assess the performances of tourism management of local governments when economic and environmental aspects are considered as equally relevant. In particular, the focus is on the comparison and efficiency assessment of Italian municipalities located on the costal areas. In order to assess the efficiency status of the considered management units, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a methodology for evaluating the relative efficiency of decision making units, is applied. The efficiency index measure used in DEA analysis accounts for both environmental and economic features correlated to the tourism industry. Further, potential managerial improvements for those areas resulting far from the efficiency frontier can be investigated.Data envelopment analysis, Sustainable tourism

A Data Envelopment Analysis Approach to the Assessment of Natural Parks’ Economic Efficiency and Sustainability. The Case of Italian National Parks

Wilderness protection is a growing necessity for modern societies, and this is particularly true for areas where population density is extremely high, as for example Europe. Conservation, however, implies very high opportunity costs. It is thus crucial to create incentives to efficient management practices, to promote benchmarking and to improve conservation management. In the present paper we propose a methodology based on Data Envelopment Analysis, DEA, a non parametric benchmarking technique specifically developed to assess the relative efficiency of decision-making units. In particular, the objective of the discussed methodology is to assess the relative efficiency of the management units of the protected area and to indicate how it could be improved, by providing a set of guidelines. The main advantage of this methodology is that it allows to assess the efficiency of natural parks’ management not only internally (comparing the performance of the park to itself in time) but also by external benchmarking, thus providing new and different perspectives on potential improvements. Although the proposed methodology is fairly general, we have applied it to the context of Italian National Parks in order to produce a representative case study. Specifically, the choice of adequate cost and benefit indicators is a very important and delicate phase of any benchmark analysis. For this purpose, a questionnaire was used to investigate the opinions of Italian National Parks managers and stakeholders and to define the relevant indicators for the analysis. Finally, relevant policy implications for the case study are given.Data envelopment analysis, Natural park management

A bi-level multi-objective data envelopment analysis model for estimating profit and operational efficiency of bank branches

    Get PDF
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a powerful method for analyzing the performance of decision making units (DMUs). Traditionally, DEA is applied for estimating the performance of a set of DMUs through measuring a single perspective of efficiency. However, in recent years, due to increasing competition in various industries, modern enterprises focus on enhancing their performance by measuring efficiencies in different aspects, separately or simultaneously. This paper proposes a bi-level multi-objective DEA (BLMO DEA) model which is able to assess the performance of DMUs in two different hierarchical dimensions, simultaneously. In the proposed model, we define two level efficiency scores for each DMU. The aim is to maximize these two efficiencies, simultaneously, for each DMU. Since the objective functions at both levels are fractional, a fuzzy fractional goal programming (FGP) methodology is used to solve the proposed BLMO DEA model. The capability of the proposed model is illustrated by a numerical example. Finally, to practically validate the proposed model, a real case study from 45 bank’s branches is applied. The results show that the proposed model can provide a more comprehensive measure for efficiency of each bank’s branch based on simultaneous measuring of two different efficiencies, profit and operational efficiencies, and by considering the level of their importance

Using data envelopment analysis to screen the possibility of a fair globalization

The International Labor Office, an arm of the UN based in Geneva, has as its goal to promote opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. Since 1999, the ILO has conducted a series of studies of the effects of globalization. In 2004, the organization posed the challenge of tempering the perceived effects of globalization, aiming for A Fair Globalization. Fair rules on trade and finance need to be put in place benefiting men and women in rich and poor countries alike. Using standard economic terms, A Fair Globalization may be seen as the output of a generalized input-output function, dependent upon variables of both economic performance and economic and social policy. Using data envelopment analysis, we fit a piece-wise linear frontier to observations for 72 countries from all continents. Inefficient countries reveal conditions of lacking fairness

An equivalent linear programming form of general linear fractional programming: A duality approach

    Get PDF
Linear fractional programming has been an important planning tool for the past four decades. The main contribution of this study is to show, under some assumptions, for a linear programming problem, that there are two different dual problems (one linear programming and one linear fractional functional programming) that are equivalent. In other words, we formulate a linear programming problem that is equivalent to the general linear fractional functional programming problem. These equivalent models have some interesting properties which help us to prove the related duality theorems in an easy manner. A traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is taken, as an instance, to illustrate the applicability of the proposed approach.Web of Science914art. no. 158

Technical Efficiency of Shipping Banks: A DEA Approach

    Get PDF
The international transportation Industry involves various sectors, shipping being one with particular characteristics which differentiates it from others. Within this scope, commercial banks are one of the main entities that may offer the required funding in a market that is characterized by the need for large amounts of capital and high operating costs. Banks play a significant role and are required to assess a number of factors in order to limit the risk from loans as well as to establish an accurate risk-return ratio. The efficiency of banks involved in the shipping industry is particularly important since it may, on one hand, affect financial growth, and on the other, create systemic crisis that may affect the economy as a whole as it directly affects the borrowing and consequently the financial situation and investment activity the shipping companies. This paper presents an effort to assess the shipping banks’ efficiency, and the determination of those factors which affect their technical efficiency, through the application of Data Envelopment Analysis. The results of this research indicate the factors that affect the efficiency of the shipping banks such as ROA, ROE, total loan loss provision to total loans ratio, total deposits and total assets, providing significant information to be considered by management regarding factors on which they should further focus in order to maintain and/or reinforce technical efficiency
