    DESIGNING COST-EFFECTIVE COARSE-GRAINED RECONFIGURABLE ARCHITECTURE

    Application-specific optimization of embedded systems becomes inevitable to satisfy the market demand for designers to meet tighter constraints on cost, performance and power. On the other hand, the flexibility of a system is also important to accommodate the short time-to-market requirements for embedded systems. To compromise these incompatible demands, coarse-grained reconfigurable architecture (CGRA) has emerged as a suitable solution. A typical CGRA requires many processing elements (PEs) and a configuration cache for reconfiguration of its PE array. However, such a structure consumes significant area and power. Therefore, designing cost-effective CGRA has been a serious concern for reliability of CGRA-based embedded systems. As an effort to provide such cost-effective design, the first half of this work focuses on reducing power in the configuration cache. For power saving in the configuration cache, a low power reconfiguration technique is presented based on reusable context pipelining achieved by merging the concept of context reuse into context pipelining. In addition, we propose dynamic context compression capable of supporting only required bits of the context words set to enable and the redundant bits set to disable. Finally, we provide dynamic context management capable of reducing reduce power consumption in configuration cache by controlling a read/write operation of the redundant context words In the second part of this dissertation, we focus on designing a cost-effective PE array to reduce area and power. For area and power saving in a PE array, we devise a costeffective array fabric addresses novel rearrangement of processing elements and their interconnection designs to reduce area and power consumption. In addition, hierarchical reconfigurable computing arrays are proposed consisting of two reconfigurable computing blocks with two types of communication structure together. The two computing blocks have shared critical resources and such a sharing structure provides efficient communication interface between them with reducing overall area. Based on the proposed design approaches, a CGRA combining the multiple design schemes is shown to verify the synergy effect of the integrated approach. Experimental results show that the integrated approach reduces area by 23.07% and power by up to 72% when compared with the conventional CGRA

    dissertationThe embedded system space is characterized by a rapid evolution in the complexity and functionality of applications. In addition, the short time-to-market nature of the business motivates the use of programmable devices capable of meeting the conflicting constraints of low-energy, high-performance, and short design times. The keys to achieving these conflicting constraints are specialization and maximally extracting available application parallelism. General purpose processors are flexible but are either too power hungry or lack the necessary performance. Application-specific integrated circuits (ASICS) efficiently meet the performance and power needs but are inflexible. Programmable domain-specific architectures (DSAs) are an attractive middle ground, but their design requires significant time, resources, and expertise in a variety of specialties, which range from application algorithms to architecture and ultimately, circuit design. This dissertation presents CoGenE, a design framework that automates the design of energy-performance-optimal DSAs for embedded systems. For a given application domain and a user-chosen initial architectural specification, CoGenE consists of a a Compiler to generate execution binary, a simulator Generator to collect performance/energy statistics, and an Explorer that modifies the current architecture to improve energy-performance-area characteristics. The above process repeats automatically until the user-specified constraints are achieved. This removes or alleviates the time needed to understand the application, manually design the DSA, and generate object code for the DSA. Thus, CoGenE is a new design methodology that represents a significant improvement in performance, energy dissipation, design time, and resources. This dissertation employs the face recognition domain to showcase a flexible architectural design methodology that creates "ASIC-like" DSAs. The DSAs are instruction set architecture (ISA)-independent and achieve good energy-performance characteristics by coscheduling the often conflicting constraints of data access, data movement, and computation through a flexible interconnect. This represents a significant increase in programming complexity and code generation time. To address this problem, the CoGenE compiler employs integer linear programming (ILP)-based 'interconnect-aware' scheduling techniques for automatic code generation. The CoGenE explorer employs an iterative technique to search the complete design space and select a set of energy-performance-optimal candidates. When compared to manual designs, results demonstrate that CoGenE produces superior designs for three application domains: face recognition, speech recognition and wireless telephony. While CoGenE is well suited to applications that exhibit a streaming behavior, multithreaded applications like ray tracing present a different but important challenge. To demonstrate its generality, CoGenE is evaluated in designing a novel multicore N-wide SIMD architecture, known as StreamRay, for the ray tracing domain. CoGenE is used to synthesize the SIMD execution cores, the compiler that generates the application binary, and the interconnection subsystem. Further, separating address and data computations in space reduces data movement and contention for resources, thereby significantly improving performance compared to existing ray tracing approaches

    Signal processing algorithms for digital hearing aids

    Hearing loss is a problem that severely affects the speech communication and disqualify most hearing-impaired people from holding a normal life. Although the vast majority of hearing loss cases could be corrected by using hearing aids, however, only a scarce of hearing-impaired people who could be benefited from hearing aids purchase one. This irregular use of hearing aids arises from the existence of a problem that, to date, has not been solved effectively and comfortably: the automatic adaptation of the hearing aid to the changing acoustic environment that surrounds its user. There are two approaches aiming to comply with it. On the one hand, the "manual" approach, in which the user has to identify the acoustic situation and choose the adequate amplification program has been found to be very uncomfortable. The second approach requires to include an automatic program selection within the hearing aid. This latter approach is deemed very useful by most hearing aid users, even if its performance is not completely perfect. Although the necessity of the aforementioned sound classification system seems to be clear, its implementation is a very difficult matter. The development of an automatic sound classification system in a digital hearing aid is a challenging goal because of the inherent limitations of the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) the hearing aid is based on. The underlying reason is that most digital hearing aids have very strong constraints in terms of computational capacity, memory and battery, which seriously limit the implementation of advanced algorithms in them. With this in mind, this thesis focuses on the design and implementation of a prototype for a digital hearing aid able to automatically classify the acoustic environments hearing aid users daily face on and select the amplification program that is best adapted to such environment aiming at enhancing the speech intelligibility perceived by the user. The most important contribution of this thesis is the implementation of a prototype for a digital hearing aid that automatically classifies the acoustic environment surrounding its user and selects the most appropriate amplification program for such environment, aiming at enhancing the sound quality perceived by the user. The battery life of this hearing aid is 140 hours, which has been found to be very similar to that of hearing aids in the market, and what is of key importance, there is still about 30% of the DSP resources available for implementing other algorithms

    Neuromorphic Learning Systems for Supervised and Unsupervised Applications

    The advancements in high performance computing (HPC) have enabled the large-scale implementation of neuromorphic learning models and pushed the research on computational intelligence into a new era. Those bio-inspired models are constructed on top of unified building blocks, i.e. neurons, and have revealed potentials for learning of complex information. Two major challenges remain in neuromorphic computing. Firstly, sophisticated structuring methods are needed to determine the connectivity of the neurons in order to model various problems accurately. Secondly, the models need to adapt to non-traditional architectures for improved computation speed and energy efficiency. In this thesis, we address these two problems and apply our techniques to different cognitive applications. This thesis first presents the self-structured confabulation network for anomaly detection. Among the machine learning applications, unsupervised detection of the anomalous streams is especially challenging because it requires both detection accuracy and real-time performance. Designing a computing framework that harnesses the growing computing power of the multicore systems while maintaining high sensitivity and specificity to the anomalies is an urgent research need. We present AnRAD (Anomaly Recognition And Detection), a bio-inspired detection framework that performs probabilistic inferences. We leverage the mutual information between the features and develop a self-structuring procedure that learns a succinct confabulation network from the unlabeled data. This network is capable of fast incremental learning, which continuously refines the knowledge base from the data streams. Compared to several existing anomaly detection methods, the proposed approach provides competitive detection accuracy as well as the insight to reason the decision making. Furthermore, we exploit the massive parallel structure of the AnRAD framework. Our implementation of the recall algorithms on the graphic processing unit (GPU) and the Xeon Phi co-processor both obtain substantial speedups over the sequential implementation on general-purpose microprocessor (GPP). The implementation enables real-time service to concurrent data streams with diversified contexts, and can be applied to large problems with multiple local patterns. Experimental results demonstrate high computing performance and memory efficiency. For vehicle abnormal behavior detection, the framework is able to monitor up to 16000 vehicles and their interactions in real-time with a single commodity co-processor, and uses less than 0.2ms for each testing subject. While adapting our streaming anomaly detection model to mobile devices or unmanned systems, the key challenge is to deliver required performance under the stringent power constraint. To address the paradox between performance and power consumption, brain-inspired hardware, such as the IBM Neurosynaptic System, has been developed to enable low power implementation of neural models. As a follow-up to the AnRAD framework, we proposed to port the detection network to the TrueNorth architecture. Implementing inference based anomaly detection on a neurosynaptic processor is not straightforward due to hardware limitations. A design flow and the supporting component library are developed to flexibly map the learned detection networks to the neurosynaptic cores. Instead of the popular rate code, burst code is adopted in the design, which represents numerical value using the phase of a burst of spike trains. This does not only reduce the hardware complexity, but also increases the result\u27s accuracy. A Corelet library, NeoInfer-TN, is implemented for basic operations in burst code and two-phase pipelines are constructed based on the library components. The design can be configured for different tradeoffs between detection accuracy, hardware resource consumptions, throughput and energy. We evaluate the system using network intrusion detection data streams. The results show higher detection rate than some conventional approaches and real-time performance, with only 50mW power consumption. Overall, it achieves 10^8 operations per Joule. In addition to the modeling and implementation of unsupervised anomaly detection, we also investigate a supervised learning model based on neural networks and deep fragment embedding and apply it to text-image retrieval. The study aims at bridging the gap between image and natural language. It continues to improve the bidirectional retrieval performance across the modalities. Unlike existing works that target at single sentence densely describing the image objects, we elevate the topic to associating deep image representations with noisy texts that are only loosely correlated. Based on text-image fragment embedding, our model employs a sequential configuration, connects two embedding stages together. The first stage learns the relevancy of the text fragments, and the second stage uses the filtered output from the first one to improve the matching results. The model also integrates multiple convolutional neural networks (CNN) to construct the image fragments, in which rich context information such as human faces can be extracted to increase the alignment accuracy. The proposed method is evaluated with both synthetic dataset and real-world dataset collected from picture news website. The results show up to 50% ranking performance improvement over the comparison models

To widen the scope of accuracy-aware computing including approximate computing for other domains, this thesis presents innovative accuracy-aware methods and techniques for different system layers.     About the development of visual search algorithms and their hardware implementations

    2015 - 2016The main goal of my work is to exploit the benefits of a hardware implementation of a 3D visual search pipeline. The term visual search refers to the task of searching objects in the environment starting from the real world representation. Object recognition today is mainly based on scene descriptors, an unique description for special spots in the data structure. This task has been implemented traditionally for years using just plain images: an image descriptor is a feature vector used to describe a position in the images. Matching descriptors present in different viewing of the same scene should allows the same spot to be found from different angles, therefore a good descriptor should be robust with respect to changes in: scene luminosity, camera affine transformations (rotation, scale and translation), camera noise and object affine transformations. Clearly, by using 2D images it is not possible to be robust with respect to the change in the projective space, e.g. if the object is rotated with respect to the up camera axes its 2D projection will dramatically change. For this reason, alongside 2D descriptors, many techniques have been proposed to solve the projective transformation problem using 3D descriptors that allow to map the shape of the objects and consequently the surface real appearance. This category of descriptors relies on 3D Point Cloud and Disparity Map to build a reliable feature vector which is invariant to the projective transformation. More sophisticated techniques are needed to obtain the 3D representation of the scene and, if necessary, the texture of the 3D model and obviously these techniques are also more computationally intensive than the simple image capture. The field of 3D model acquisition is very broad, it is possible to distinguish between two main categories: active and passive methods. In the active methods category we can find special devices able to obtain 3D information projecting special light and. Generally an infrared projector is coupled with a camera: while the infrared light projects a well known and fixed pattern, the camera will receive the information of the patterns reflection on a certain surface and the distortion in the pattern will give the precise depth of every point in the scene. These kind of sensors are of i i “output” — 2017/6/22 — 18:23 — page 3 — #3 i i i i i i 3 course expensive and not very efficient from the power consumption point of view, since a lot of power is wasted projecting light and the use of lasers also imposes eye safety rules on frame rate and transmissed power. Another way to obtain 3D models is to use passive stereo vision techniques, where two (or more) cameras are required which only acquire the scene appearance. Using the two (or more) images as input for a stereo matching algorithm it is possible to reconstruct the 3D world. Since more computational resources will be needed for this task, hardware acceleration can give an impressive performance boost over pure software approach. In this work I will explore the principal steps of a visual search pipeline composed by a 3D vision and a 3D description system. Both systems will take advantage of a parallelized architecture prototyped in RTL and implemented on an FPGA platform. This is a huge research field and in this work I will try to explain the reason for all the choices I made for my implementation, e.g. chosen algorithms, applied heuristics to accelerate the performance and selected device. In the first chapter we explain the Visual Search issues, showing the main components required by a Visual Search pipeline. Then I show the implemented architecture for a stereo vision system based on a Bio-informatics inspired approach, where the final system can process up to 30fps at 1024 × 768 pixels. After that a clever method for boosting the performance of 3D descriptor is presented and as last chapter the final architecture for the SHOT descriptor on FPGA will be presented. [edited by author]L’obiettivo principale di questo lavoro e’ quello di esplorare i benefici di una implementazione hardware per una pipeline di visual search 3D. Il termine visual search si riferisce al problema di ricerca di oggetti nell’ambiente. L’object recognition ai giorni nostri e’ principalmente basato sull’uso di descrittori della scena, una descrizione univoca per i punti salienti. Questo compito e’ stato implementato per anni utilizzando immagini: il descrittore di un punto dell’immagine e’ un semplice vettore di caratteristiche. Accoppiando i descrittori presenti in differenti viste della stessa scena permette di trovare punti nello spazio visibili da entrambe le viste. Chiaramente, utilizzando immagini 2D non e’ possibile avere descrittori che sono robusti a cambiamenti della prospettiva, per questo motivo, molte tecniche sono state proposte per risolvere questo problema utilizzando descrittori 3D. Questa categoria di descrittori si avvale di 3D point cloud e mappe di disparita’. Ovviamente tecniche piu’ sofisticate sono necessarie per ottenere la rappresentazione 3D della scena. Il campo dell’acquisizione 3D e’ molto vasto ed e’ possibile distinguere tra due categorie di sensori: sensori attivi e passivi. Tra i sensori attivi possiamo annoverare dispositivi in grado di proiettare un pattern di luce infrarossa sulla scena, questo pattern noto presenta delle variazioni dovute agli oggetti presenti nella scena. Una camera infrarossi riceve l’immagine distorta del pattern e deduce la geometria della scena. Questo tipo di dispositivi non sono molto efficienti dal punto di vista energetico dato che un sacco di corrente viene consumata per proiettare il pattern. Un altro modo per ottenere un modello 3D e’ quello di usare sensori passivi, una coppia di telecamere puo’ essere utilizzata per ottenere informazioni utilizzando metodi di triangolazione. Questi metodi pero’ richiedono un sacco di potenza computazionale nel caso di applicazioni real time, per questo motivo e’ necessario utilizzare dispositivi ad-hoc quali architetture hardware dedicate implementate mediante l’uso di FPGA e ASIC. In questo lavoro ho esplorato gli step principali di una pipeline per la visual search composta da un sistema di visione 3D e uno per la descrizione di punti. Entrambi i sistemi si avvalgono di achitetture hardware dedicate prototipate in RTL e implementate su FPGA. Questo e’ un grosso campo di lavoro e provo ad esplorare i benefici di una implementazione harwadere per l’accelerazione degli algoritmi stessi e il risparmi di energia elettrica.     Stepwise Evolutionary Training Strategies for Hardware Neural Networks

    Analog and mixed-signal implementations of artificial neural networks usually lack an exact numerical model due to the unavoidable device variations introduced during manufacturing and the temporal fluctuations in the internal analog signals. Evolutionary algorithms are particularly well suited for the training of such networks since they do not require detailed knowledge of the system to be optimized. In order to make best use of the high network speed, fast and simple training approaches are required. Within the scope of this thesis, a stepwise training approach has been devised that allows for the use of simple evolutionary algorithms to efficiently optimize the synaptic weights of a fast mixed-signal neural network chip. The training strategy is tested on a set of nine well-known classification benchmarks: the breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, liver disorder, iris plant, wine, glass, E.coli, and yeast data sets. The obtained classification accuracies are shown to be more than competitive to those achieved by software-implemented neural networks and are comparable to the best reported results of other classification algorithms that could be found in literature for these benchmarks. The presented training method is readily suited for a parallel implementation and is fit for use in conjunction with a specialized coprocessor architecture that speeds up evolutionary algorithms by performing the time-consuming genetic operations within a configurable logic. This way, the proposed strategy can fully benefit from the speed of the neural hardware and thus provides efficient means for the training of large networks on the used mixed-signal chip for demanding real-world classification tasks

    An evident challenge ahead for the integrated circuit (IC) industry in the nanometer regime is the investigation and development of methods that can reduce the design complexity ensuing from growing process variations and curtail the turnaround time of chip manufacturing. Conventional methodologies employed for such tasks are largely manual; thus, time-consuming and resource-intensive. In contrast, the unique learning strategies of artificial intelligence (AI) provide numerous exciting automated approaches for handling complex and data-intensive tasks in very-large-scale integration (VLSI) design and testing. Employing AI and machine learning (ML) algorithms in VLSI design and manufacturing reduces the time and effort for understanding and processing the data within and across different abstraction levels via automated learning algorithms. It, in turn, improves the IC yield and reduces the manufacturing turnaround time. This paper thoroughly reviews the AI/ML automated approaches introduced in the past towards VLSI design and manufacturing. Moreover, we discuss the scope of AI/ML applications in the future at various abstraction levels to revolutionize the field of VLSI design, aiming for high-speed, highly intelligent, and efficient implementations
