The importance of aquaculture to the population of India is well known. There is considerable scope for improving the fish protein resources by resorting to intensive and scientific methods of aquaculture. Aquaculture helps to augment production and provides gainful employment to people. In this system, fish is stocked in culture farms at a high density and given artificial feeds. Unnaturally high population favours the spread of diseases. Disease is one of the most serious problems in aquaculture. The frequency and severity of disease outbreaks have increased with the intensification of aquaculture

Using Risk Perceptions to Develop Effective Great Lakes Aquatic Invasive Species Outreach

    Get PDF
We examined risk perceptions that aquatic-based recreation stakeholders in the Great Lakes region held about fish diseases, using viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) as our case study. Eighty-five percent of study participants knew nothing or very little about VHS. Regarding risks posed by VHS, participants overall were most concerned about risks to the environment and fishing. Additionally, greater than 75% were concerned about fish diseases, in general, affecting the Great Lakes or inland lakes. Outreach efforts can be enhanced by focusing on areas of greatest risk invasion; targeting boaters, paddlers, kayakers, and anglers; increasing awareness of and concern about fish diseases; and communicating actions boaters should take

Fumagillin, an efficacious drug against renal sphaerosporosis of the common carp Cyprinus carpio

At present no reliable and efficacious drugs are available for treating fish diseases caused by myxosporeans. By feeding Fumagillin DCH salt in the diet, the authors achieved very promising results in controlling renal sphaerosporosis, one of the commonest myxosporean parasitoses of common carp Cyprinus carpio. Intraperitoneal injection of Sphaerospora renicola stages developing in the swimbladder produced sphaerosporosis only in control groups, whereas in fish consuming 0.1 % fumagillin no infection developed. Farm-pond experiments also gave promising results: in fumagillintreated common carp fry a much milder sphaerosporosis developed, both in prevalence and intensity, than in control fish

Bottlenecks in diagnostics of Mediterranean fish diseases

Three independent Horizon 2020 projects are prioritising a common task of solving diagnostic issues using different approaches and strategies. PerformFISH focuses its research objectives on diagnostic methods, MedAID has prepared a diagnostic manual for the most devastating fish diseases of the Mediterranean and ParaFishControl has prepared a diagnostic manual on parasitic diseases of European aquaculture species. Currently, the projects are investing large collaborative efforts to reinforce their tasks and to deliver mutual and cutting-edge material on the subject. Nevertheless, further efforts for the harmonisation, standardisation and validation of diagnostic methods for infectious diseases in Mediterranean aquaculture are needed, involving as many relevant stakeholders and experts as possible. The main goal of the workshop (WS) “Bottlenecks in diagnostics of Mediterranean fish diseases”, organised during the 19th International EAFP conference on Diseases of Fish and Shellfish, was to present results already obtained from the projects and discuss the bottlenecks in diagnostic procedures of target groups of pathogens. The WS provided an ideal environment and opportunity to exchange and discuss experiences and data with international experts in the diagnostic field attending the conference. Interactive discussions on diagnostics for a specific group of pathogens have resulted in highlighting new initiatives needed in the management of diseases in Mediterranean aquaculture. Furthermore, the WS emphasised a need for the establishment of this strong interactive network which will collaborate to receive, collect, compile and analyse all information gathered from different parts of the region.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
