The privacy implications of social robots: Scoping review and expert interviews

    Get PDF
In this contribution, we investigate the privacy implications of social robots as an emerging mobile technology. Drawing on a scoping literature review and expert interviews, we show how social robots come with privacy implications that go beyond those of established mobile technology. Social robots challenge not only users’ informational privacy but also affect their physical, psychological, and social privacy due to their autonomy and potential for social bonding. These distinctive privacy challenges require study from varied theoretical perspectives, with contextual privacy and human–machine communication emerging as particularly fruitful lenses. Findings also point to an increasing focus on technological privacy solutions, complementing an evolving legal landscape as well as a strengthening of user agency and literacy

Does Mobile Technology Matter? A Student Centric Perspective

    Get PDF
Based on a student-centric perspective, this study seeks to understand how mobile technology influences students’ learning experiences. Our research motivation is driven by the increasing attention paid to mobile technology in the research and business community. Set in a public university setting, our investigation seeks to shed light on how teaching and learning could be reshaped by mobile technology, most specifically, emerging tablet PCs. The findings, based on two MIS (Management Information Systems) courses, one graduate and the other undergraduate, suggest that overall students perceived the mobility of tablet PC positively. In addition, graduate students expressed a higher degree of learning satisfaction and greater expectation of future technology usage than undergraduate students. Indeed, mobile technology seems to matter to students’ learning in general. The finding is particularly relevant when considering how to incorporate mobile technology into teaching practice as such technology-driven teaching practice is increasingly being expected in the contemporary networked society. Additional insights for managers, technology vendors, and college instructors are also discussed

Nowadays, M-Commerce influences on organizational and social activities cause to change the nature of performance styles. This research explores how organizations are influenced to adopt the M-commerce. The research employed the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to examine factors affecting organization attitudes toward this emerging mobile technology and applications. In present research the sample size consisted of 79 employees that were selected at random from 42 branches of employees from Saderat Bank in Tabriz-Iran in 2012. Data analyses were carried out by using Factor Analysis, Structural Equation and Freidman Mean Ranking Test. The results of present study illustrated that there was a significant relationship between factors together, and also considering the Ranking Analyses it can be said that the Compatibility of performance factors is more important factor than others for improving M-Commerce in studied place

Mobile-assisted narrative writing practice for young English language learners from a funds of knowledge approach

    Get PDF
As a nation of immigrants with diverse cultures and nationalities, one of the most striking occurrences in the United States educational system is the rapidly increasing enrollment of English Language Learners (ELLs). In view of their multicultural backgrounds, the multiliteracies education of ELLs is intertwined with their diverse socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as their technological experiences. This 4-week research implemented an instrumental case study approach using funds of knowledge (FoK; see González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005) to explore the learning effects of scaffolding young ELLs’ narrative writing skills through the use of tablet computers (iPads) and a digital handwriting app (Penultimate). Research findings showed that ELLs’ learning motivation and quality of narrative writing abilities were enhanced through the use of this mobile technology. The culture-based writing topics based on FoK mirrored the ELLs’ multicultural backgrounds and provided ELL teachers a creative way to incorporate students’ prior knowledge into their English as second language learning through a culture-based instructional model. Parents also played a potential role in young ELLs’ mobile-assisted language learning. Future studies should be directed toward extending multiliteracies curricula through FoK to actively engage ELLs in narrative writing activities through the use of emerging mobile technology

Securing Mobile Technology & Financial Transactions in the United States

One of the paradoxes of modern life is the conflict between convenience and security. Advances in technology simultaneously usher in progress and pain. The development of mobile and smartphone technology will have a significant positive impact on financial transactions and the average consumer’s access to financial services. Nevertheless, there are several reasons to secure mobile technology and financial transactions in the United States. First, cell phones increase the risk to personal security and most U.S. wireless carriers are using outdated encryption technology. Second, many cell phone users are more concerned with convenience—caring more about the availability and functionality of smartphone applications—than with potential security threats. This will change as more consumers use their phones for financial transactions. Third, evidence from other developed countries, including Canada and several nations in Europe, has shown that it is possible to provide additional security protections for consumers. Americans rely on their smartphones to transmit financial data about themselves, their work places and families. While some privacy laws have been interpreted to cover the unique threats posed by mobile technology, most do not, and security and privacy issues in regards to mobile banking have been largely unheralded. This Article identifies existing privacy laws and security regulations that have been applied to mobile technologies by federal and state governments, by courts, and by various regulatory agencies. The Article then analyzes the shortcomings of the current regulatory framework in the United States. After examining several policy recommendations, as well as current standards in the telecommunications industry, the Article concludes with several suggestions for mitigating the risks posed by emerging mobile technology. Without entirely upending the current system, U.S. laws can be expanded and streamlined to address future challenges

A Model of Attitudes toward the Acceptance of Mobile Phone Use in Public Places

Since the first commercial launch of cellular telecoms by NET in Tokyo Japan in 1979 and the launch of the NMT system in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden in 1981, the mobile phone has undergone continual incremental innovation for changing market needs. This study investigates the factors affecting the attitudes towards the social acceptance of mobile phones in public places and how this attitude affects its usage. Theories on innovation and technology acceptance were reviewed, and studies relating demographic factors to technology acceptance were examined. A model was proposed relating the usage frequency and attitudes towards acceptance of mobile phone in public places to demographic factors, such as country, age, education, gender, and work status. A survey was conducted among mobile phone users, and the sample consisted of 1079 respondents in the United States, France, Italy, Turkey, and Finland. A structural equation model was developed to analyze the survey data. Results of the analysis indicate that the attitudes about mobile phone use in public places depend on country, and age factors. This attitude in turn significantly affects the usage frequency of mobile phones. In addition, usage frequency also is affected by gender and work status. Implications of the findings for both academicians and practitioners are discussedAttitudes about Mobile Phone Use, Simultaneous Relationships, Demographic Factors, Mobile Phone Voice Messaging, Mobile Phone Text Messaging

An Alternative Undergraduate Teacher Preparation Program: A Comprehensive One-to-One iPad Initiative Model

    Get PDF
To date, little literature has been published on how an alternative undergraduate teacher preparation program infuses mobile devices such as the iPad and its applications, model classrooms, and a high-tech computer lab to prepare teacher candidates. Preparing teacher candidates to generalize technological skills is most effective when it is hands on, using the varied devices and support available to them. Meaningful instruction, application and maintenance of technological usage is the key to 21st century teaching and learning but it will not occur without a designed plan of action or model. This article focuses on the prominence of the use of iPads for teacher candidates in higher education and its potential impact on the learning of students with varying backgrounds and abilities in public schools. Further, it provides conceptual, systematic, comprehensive, and ready-to-use three phases of an existing one-to-one iPad initiative model at a southeast institution of higher education in the United States of America.
