    What lessons can we learn from Babe, a sheep-pig, about inter-cultural adaptation?

    This paper examines the movie Babe to discuss inter-cultural adaptation strategies and the role that affection and trust plays in inter-cultural relations. Specifically this paper discusses these inter-cultural themes in the context of who Babe becomes (a sheep-pig) and what his transformation into this hybrid may teach us about the inter-cultural adaptation journey. The paper provides a description of the major themes and characters in the movie, and shows how Babe and other animal characters approach the process of intercultural adaptation with varied degrees of success. We suggest that Babe is a useful resource for educators, and suggest ways that the movie can be used to promote dialogue in the classroom about inter-cultural adaptation strategies

    Cultural adaptation of birthing services in rural Ayacucho, Peru.

    PROBLEM: Maternal mortality is particularly high among poor, indigenous women in rural Peru, and the use of facility care is low, partly due to cultural insensitivities of the health care system. APPROACH: A culturally appropriate delivery care model was developed in poor and isolated rural communities, and implemented between 1999 and 2001 in cooperation with the Quechua indigenous communities and health professionals. Data on birth location and attendance in one health centre have been collected up to 2007. LOCAL SETTING: The international nongovernmental organization, Health Unlimited, and its Peruvian partner organization, Salud Sín Límites Perú, conducted the project in Santillana district in Ayacucho. RELEVANT CHANGES: The model involves features such as a rope and bench for vertical delivery position, inclusion of family and traditional birth attendants in the delivery process and use of the Quechua language. The proportion of births delivered in the health facility increased from 6% in 1999 to 83% in 2007 with high satisfaction levels. LESSONS LEARNED: Implementing a model of skilled delivery attendance that integrates modern medical and traditional Andean elements is feasible and sustainable. Indigenous women with little formal education do use delivery services if their needs are met. This contradicts common victim-blaming attitudes that ascribe high levels of home births to 'cultural preferences' or 'ignorance'

    Methodological considerations when translating "burnout"

    No study has systematically examined how researchers address cross-cultural adaptation of burnout. We conducted an integrative review to examine how researchers had adapted the instruments to the different contexts. We reviewed the Content Validity Indexing scores for the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey from the 12-country comparative nursing workforce study, RN4CAST. In the integrative review, multiple issues related to translation were found in existing studies. In the cross-cultural instrument analysis, 7 out of 22 items on the instrument received an extremely low kappa score. Investigators may need to employ more rigorous cross-cultural adaptation methods when attempting to measure burnout

This writing of this study is based on the knowledge of cross cultural understanding which tells about immigrant's cultural adaptation in the new country. The term of cultural adaptation is proposed by Prof. Tyalor  Burnett while the cultural adaptation process is based on Anthony. The impacts of cultural adaptation will be depicted by cultural identity by Pratt Nicola as the main revelation of the impacts of cultural adaptation process. Then,the from the several impacts which happened like Diaspora by William Safren,Double consciousness which causes unhomeliness, by Du Bois, the mimicry which causes imitation also hybridity which causes hybrid culture by Hommi Bhaba. The purpose of the study is to describe the cultural adaptation process and to reveal the impacts of cultural adaptation which is happened in the novel. Data are collected ,classified and analyzed to explain the cultural adaptation process and impacts of cultural adaptation .The analysis is conducted by applying rhetorical framework in the statement of problems. The analysis shows that cultural adaptation process  describes the four stage of cultural adaptation process which happened in novel. Then the impacts of cultural adaptation process are revealed four impacts. Those are Diaspora,Unhomeliness , imitation, and hybrid culture.Those impacts can be happened in each Afgan immigrant who tries to adapt in new place which has different culture.Those impacts can be different depends on their cultural adaptation process in each stage.     Cultural Adaptation of Recipes

    Building upon the considerable advances in Large Language Models (LLMs), we are now equipped to address more sophisticated tasks demanding a nuanced understanding of cross-cultural contexts. A key example is recipe adaptation, which goes beyond simple translation to include a grasp of ingredients, culinary techniques, and dietary preferences specific to a given culture. We introduce a new task involving the translation and cultural adaptation of recipes between Chinese and English-speaking cuisines. To support this investigation, we present CulturalRecipes, a unique dataset comprised of automatically paired recipes written in Mandarin Chinese and English. This dataset is further enriched with a human-written and curated test set. In this intricate task of cross-cultural recipe adaptation, we evaluate the performance of various methods, including GPT-4 and other LLMs, traditional machine translation, and information retrieval techniques. Our comprehensive analysis includes both automatic and human evaluation metrics. While GPT-4 exhibits impressive abilities in adapting Chinese recipes into English, it still lags behind human expertise when translating English recipes into Chinese. This underscores the multifaceted nature of cultural adaptations. We anticipate that these insights will significantly contribute to future research on culturally-aware language models and their practical application in culturally diverse contexts.Comment: Accepted to TAC

    The essence of notion «socio-cultural adaptation» and peculiarities of its manifestation for foreign master degree students – prospective voice instructors. The article considers the education issues of the foreign artistic master degree students. The essence of notions «adaptation» and «socio- cultural adaptation» is analyzed; peculiarities of socio-cultural adaptation in the musical education field and the problems that are faced by Chinese students while mastering the specialty of voice instructor are revealed.     A Survey of Foreign Students’ Cross-cultural Adaptation in Chongqing Normal University—A Case Study of Sri Lankan Students

    Cross-cultural adaptation research is an important part of study for foreign students. With theories of Searle & Ward and John W. Berry, mainly from two aspects: psychological adaptation and social-cultural adaptation, the research investigates Sri Lankan students’ cross-cultural adaptation in Chongqing Normal University and analyzes the problems of Sri Lankan students’ cross-cultural adaptation in Chongqing Normal University in four aspects: Chinese reading and vocabulary, communication and exchange, adaptation of learning and teaching styles and knowledge of Chinese culture. Combined with the survey and problems of Sri Lankan students’ adaptation, the research will be used to give relevant suggestions to help Sri Lankan students adapt Chinese culture better
