Strange Bedfellows: SmarterSafer.Org and the Biggert-Waters Act of 2012
Metoden Àr implementerad i Capcal 4.0, (se Capcal 4.0 AnvÀndarhandledning Trivector2013:87).
Piezoelectric linear actuator
Actuator exerts linear force that is controllable and reproducible to microinch tolerance. It is constructed for extremely accurate control of a valve but can also be used as a variable venturi meter, micropositioner, microthruster, and in fluidics and reaction-control systems
Religion and Intimate Partner Violence in Chile: Macro- and Micro-Level Influences
The Catholic Church has had a strong influence on the Chilean legal and social landscape in ways that have adversely affected victims of intimate partner violence; e.g., it succeeded until just five years ago in blocking efforts to legalize divorce. At the same time, quantitative studies based on survey data from the United States and other countries show a generally favorable influence of religion on health and many other domains of life, including intimate partner violence. The present study explores the puzzle posed by these seemingly opposing macro- and micro- level forces. Results based on data from the 2005 Survey of Student Well-Being, a questionnaire on gender based violence administered to students at a large public university in Chile, show that moderate or low levels of religiosity are associated with reduced vulnerability to violence, but high levels are not. This non-linearity sheds light on the puzzle, because at the macro level the religious views shaping Chile's legal and social environment have been extreme.intimate partner violence, religion
Updating Non-Additive Probabilities -- A Geometric Approach
A geometric approach, analogous to the approach used in the additive case, is proposed to determine the conditional expectation with non- additive probabilities. The conditional expectation is then applied for (i) updating the probability when new information becomes available; and (ii) defining the notion of independence of non-additive probabilities and Nash equilibrium.updating, non-additive probabilities, conditional expectation
Attainability in Repeated Games with Vector Payoffs
We introduce the concept of attainable sets of payoffs in two-player repeated
games with vector payoffs. A set of payoff vectors is called {\em attainable}
if player 1 can ensure that there is a finite horizon such that after time
the distance between the set and the cumulative payoff is arbitrarily
small, regardless of what strategy player 2 is using. This paper focuses on the
case where the attainable set consists of one payoff vector. In this case the
vector is called an attainable vector. We study properties of the set of
attainable vectors, and characterize when a specific vector is attainable and
when every vector is attainable.Comment: 28 pages, 2 figures, conference version at NetGCoop 201
A new integral for capacities
A new integral for capacities, different from the Choquet integral, is introduced and characterized. The main feature of the new integral is concavity, which might be interpreted as uncertainty aversion. The integral is then extended to fuzzy capacities, which assign subjective expected values to random variables (e.g., portfolios) and may assign subjective probability only to a partial set of events. An equivalence between minimum over sets of additive capacities (not necessarily probability distributions) and the integral w.r.t. fuzzy capacities is demonstrated. The extension to fuzzy capacities enables one to calculate the integral also when there is information only about a few events and not about all of them.new integral, capacity, choquet integral, fuzzy capacity, concavity
Hodge-Deligne equivariant polynomials and monodromy of hyperplane arrangements
We investigate the interplay between the monodromy and the Deligne mixed
Hodge structure on the Milnor fiber of a homogeneous polynomial. In the case of
hyperplane arrangement Milnor fibers, we obtain a new result on the possible
weights. For line arrangements, we prove in a new way the fact due to Budur and
Saito that the spectrum is determined by the weak combinatorial data, and show
that such a result fails for the Hodge-Deligne polynomials.Comment: An appendix is added in this second version, where we use -adic
Hodge theory to prove that quite generally, whenever a \G-variety is
defined over a number field, the number of rational points of its reductions
modulo prime ideals can be used in certain cases to compute the equivariant
Hodge-Deligne polynomia
