HHSMT Observations of the Venusian Mesospheric Temperature, Winds, and CO abundance around the MESSENGER Flyby
We present submillimeter observations of 12CO J=3-2 and J=2-1, and 13CO J =
2-1 lines of the Venusian mesosphere and lower thermosphere with the Heinrich
Hertz Submillimeter Telescope (HHSMT) taken around the second MESSENGER flyby
of Venus on 5 June 2007. The observations cover a range of Venus solar
elongations with different fractional disk illuminations. Preliminary results
like temperature and CO abundance profiles are presented. These data are part of
a coordinated observational campaign in support of the ESA Venus Express
mission. Furthermore, this study attempts to contribute to cross-calibrate
space- and ground-based observations, to constrain radiative transfer and
retrieval algorithms for planetary atmospheres, and to a more thorough
understanding of the global patters of circulation of the Venusian atmosphere.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Latex, uses elsart.cls (included). Higher

Factoring absolutely summing operators through Hilbert-Schmidt operators
Let K be a compact Hausdorff space, and let C(K) be the corresponding Banach space of continuous functions on K. It is well-known that every 1-summing operator S:C(K)→l2 is also nuclear, and therefore factors S = S1S2, with S1:l2→l2 a Hilbert-Schmidt operator and S1:C(K)→l2 a bounded operator. It is easily seen that this latter property is preserved when C(K) is replaced by any quotient, and that a Banach space X enjoys this property if and only if its second dual, X**, does. This led A. Pełczyński [15] to ask if the second dual of a Banach space X must be isomorphic to a quotient of a C(K)-space if X has the property that every 1-summing operator X-→l2 factors through a Hilbert-Schmidt operator. In this paper, we shall first of all reformulate the question in an appropriate manner and then show that counter-examples are available among super-reflexive Tsirelson-like spaces as well as among quasi-reflexive Banach space
Mesospheric vertical thermal structure and winds on Venus from HHSMT CO spectral-line observations
We report vertical thermal structure and wind velocities in the Venusian
mesosphere retrieved from carbon monoxide (12CO J=2-1 and 13CO J=2-1) spectral
line observations obtained with the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope
(HHSMT). We observed the mesosphere of Venus from two days after the second
Messenger flyby of Venus (on June 5 2007 at 23:10 UTC) during five days.
Day-to-day and day-to-night temperature variations and short-term fluctuations
of the mesospheric zonal flow were evident in our data. The extensive layer of
warm air detected recently by SPICAV at 90 - to 100 km altitude is also
detected in the temperature profiles reported here. These data were part of a
coordinated ground-based Venus observational campaign in support of the ESA
Venus Express mission. Furthermore, this study attempts to cross-calibrate
space- and ground-based observations, to constrain radiative transfer and
retrieval algorithms for planetary atmospheres, and to contribute to a more
thorough understanding of the global patterns of circulation of the Venusian
atmosphere.Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures. Shortcut URL to this page:

A preferred vision for administering secondary schools: A reflective essay
Education has been a large and important part of my life for many years. I took my own education pretty much for granted, at least through the high school years. This seemed to be a common attitude. It was an attitude, however, that started to change during my college years, during my years of preparation in the field of education

Logged on for Democracy: The Relationship between Digital Media and Offline Political Participation over Time
Over the years Internet use has become ingrained in Americans’ daily lives. In turn, those running for office have begun to utilize the Internet for campaigning at all levels of government. How did Internet use in the 2012 and 2016 elections impact political participation? This honors thesis will examine how Internet use affects six different modes of political participation, and compare it to the findings from Bimber and Copeland’s (2013) original study that examined the 12 years prior. In addition, I will also analyze participation in protest marches and signing petitions as two additional acts of political participation. American National Election Study data from the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections concerning Internet use and traditional political participation will be used. My findings support the original authors’ expectation that while those who use Internet are more likely to participate than those who do not, it is not a consistent relationship across all of the different acts of political participation, nor is it consistent over time; however, there are a few political acts such as persuading others and doing campaign work that show a possible trend over time for a positive relationship
