Some arguments concerning correct rounding of the elementary functions

This text briefly presents the current state of our work on correctly rounded transcendentals, and explains why we feel that the correctly rounded elementary functions should appear in the FP standard (at least with a "should")

Informationsbeurteilungsfähigkeit - Eine Pilotstudie an Zürcher Gymnasien

Der Beitrag hinterfragt, wie (junge) Menschen mit im WWW gefundenen Informationen umgehen. Des Weiteren werden Fragen aufgeworfen wie: über welche Fähigkeiten verfügen Jugendliche, um im Internet gefundene Informationen sinnvoll bewerten und gegebenenfalls weiterverwenden oder verwerfen zu können? Erkennen die WWW-Nutzer bestimmten Informationen zugrunde liegende Ideologien oder Interessen? Kennen sie ihre Grenzen im Umgang mit ihnen unbekannten Wissenselementen? Mögliche Antworten auf diese Fragen versuchten die Autoren im Rahmen einer Pilotstudie, die an Zürcher Gymnasien durchgeführt wurde, zu finden. Dabei verfolgen sie auch ein pragmatisches Ziel: Sie wollen schließlich Wege aufzeigen, wie Schülerinnen und Schüler sowie Studierende beim Aufbau solcher Fähigkeiten mit einem Lehrmittel unterstützt werden können

L’article analitza la gènesi medieval de Catalunya posant de manifest la seva complexitat i originalitat. No respon a cap determinisme ni al fruit d’una conquesta o d’una immigració. El naixement de Catalunya marca el terme d’una evolució domèstica. És la construcció d’una identitat col·lectiva com a resposta a una consciència precoç d’una realitat sociològica nascuda de les condicions històriques i geogràfiques. És, per tant, una construcció original, menys en la seva forma que en la seva precocitat.The article analyses the medieval origin of Catalonia, emphasising its complexity and uniqueness. It does not respond to any type of determinism and neither is it the outcome of a conquest or immigration. The birth of Catalonia marks the period of a domestic evolution. It is the construction of a collective identity as a response to a conscious process of a sociological reality arising from historical and geographical conditions. It is, therefore, an original construction, less in its form than in its precocity

Contrary to received opinion, and despite the fact the concept of tolerance is not really valid for the historical period in question, many interfaith relationships took place during the Middle Ages. At least until the 12th century, adherents to different religions came into contact with each other, whether for the purposes of trade or economic exchange, or as a result of religious disputes. If many rituals or oaths were prescribed so as to regulate these relationships, they nonetheless allowed them to take place in spite of the limits imposed on members of different faiths. Both Catalonia and Sicily, where members of the three great religions lived in close proximity, offer exceptional examples of these relationships. All this was to change at the end of the Middle Ages when the strengthened Christian Church was no longer prepared to tolerate  religious diversity.Contrairement aux idées reçues et même si le concept de tolérance n’est pas opérant pour cette période, le Moyen Âge voit se dérouler des échanges interconfessionnels fructueux. Jusqu’au xiie siècle au moins les membres des diverses religions se rencontrent, soit dans le cadre des échanges économiques et commerciaux, soit dans le cadre des disputes religieuses. Et si des formes particulières sont prescrites pour encadrer ces échanges, elles constituent la garantie que les limites ne sont pas étanches. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in head and neck cancer: its role and treatment implications

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a member of the ErbB family of receptors. Its stimulation by endogenous ligands, EGF or transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-α) results in activation of intracellular tyrosine kinase, therefore, cell cycle progression. High levels of EGFR expression are correlated with poor prognosis and resistance to radiation therapy in a variety of cancers, mostly in squamous-cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). Blocking the EGFR by a monoclonal antibody results in inhibition of the stimulation of the receptor, therefore, in inhibition of cell proliferation, enhanced apoptosis, and reduced angiogenesis, invasiveness and metastases. The EGFR is a prime target for new anticancer therapy in SCCHN, and other agents in development include small molecular tyrosine kinase inhibitors and antisense therapies
