    Empirical testing of Tsallis' Thermodynamics as a model for dark matter halos

    We study a dark matter halo model from two points of view: the ``stellar polytrope'' (SP) model coming from Tsallis' thermodynamics, and the one coming from the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) paradigm.     Entropy considerations in constraining the mSUGRA parameter space

    We explore the use of two criteria to constraint the allowed parameter space in mSUGRA models. Both criteria are based in the calculation of the present density of neutralinos as dark matter in the Universe. The first one is the usual ``abundance'' criterion which is used to calculate the relic density after the ``freeze-out'' era. To compute the relic density we used the numerical public code micrOMEGAs. The second criterion applies the microcanonical definition of entropy to a weakly interacting and self-gravitating gas evaluating then the change in the entropy per particle of this gas between the ``freeze-out'' era and present day virialized structures. An ``entropy-consistency'' criterion emerges by comparing theoretical and empirical estimates of this entropy. The main objective of our work is to determine for which regions of the parameter space in the mSUGRA model are both criteria consistent with the 2σ\sigma bounds according to WMAP for the relic density: 0.0945<ΩCDMh2<0.12870.0945<\Omega_{CDM}h^2<0.1287. As a first result, we found that for A0=0A_0=0, sgnμ=+\mu=+, small values of tanβ\beta are not favored; only for tanβ50\beta\simeq50 are both criteria significantly consistent.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure.     Constraining the mSUGRA parameter space using the entropy of dark matter halos

    We derive an expression for the entropy of a dark matter halo described by a Navarro-Frenk-White model with a core. The comparison of this entropy with the one of dark matter at the freeze-out era allows us to constraint the parameter space in mSUGRA models. Moreover, joining these constraints with the ones obtained from the usual abundance criteria and demanding both criteria to be consistent with the 2σ\sigma bounds for the abundance of dark matter: 0.112ΩDMh20.1220.112\leq\Omega_{DM}h^2\leq0.122, we are able to clearly discriminate validity regions among the values of tanβ\tan \beta, one of the parameters of the mSUGRA model. We found that for the explored regions of the parameter space, small values of tanβ\beta are not favored; only for tanβ50\beta\simeq50 are both criteria significantly consistent. In the region where both criteria are consistent we also found a lower bound for the neutralino mass, mχ141m_{\chi}\geq 141 GeV.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in JCA

    Stellar polytropes and Navarro-Frenk-White halo models: comparison with observations

    Motivated by the possible conflict between the Navarro-Frenk-White(NFW) model predictions for the dark matter contents of galactic systems and its correlation with baryonic surface density, we will explore an alternative paradigm for the description of dark matter halos. Such an alternative emerges from Tsallis' non-extensive thermodynamics applied to self-gravitating systems and leads to the so-called ``stellar polytrope'' (SP) model. We consider that this could be a better approach to real structures rather than the isothermal model, given the fact that the first one takes into account the non-extensivity of energy and entropy present in these type of systems characterized by long-range interactions. We compare a halo based on the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) and one which follows the SP description. Analyzing the dark matter contents estimated by means of global physical parameters of galactic disks, obtained from a sample of actual galaxies, with the ones of the unobserved dark matter halos, we conclude that the SP model is favored over the NFW model in such a comparison.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures.     Anticancer potential of Thevetia peruviana fruit methanolic extract

    Abstract Background: Thevetia peruviana (Pers.) K. Schum or Cascabela peruviana (L.) Lippold (commonly known as ayoyote, codo de fraile, lucky nut, or yellow oleander), native to Mexico and Central America, is a medicinal plant used traditionally to cure diseases like ulcers, scabies, hemorrhoids and dissolve tumors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic, antiproliferative and apoptotic activity of methanolic extract of T. peruviana fruits on human cancer cell lines. Methods: The cytotoxic activity of T. peruviana methanolic extract was carried out on human breast, colorectal, prostate and lung cancer cell lines and non-tumorigenic control cells (fibroblast and Vero), using the MTT assay. For proliferation and motility, clonogenic and wound-healing assays were performed. Morphological alterations were monitored by trypan blue exclusion, as well as DNA fragmentation and AO/EB double staining was performed to evaluate apoptosis. The extract was separated using flash chromatography, and the resulting fractions were evaluated on colorectal cancer cells for their cytotoxic activity. The active fractions were further analyzed through mass spectrometry. Results: The T. peruviana methanolic extract exhibited cytotoxic activity on four human cancer cell lines: prostate, breast, colorectal and lung, with values of IC50 1.91 ± 0.76, 5.78 ± 2.12, 6.30 ± 4.45 and 12.04 ± 3.43 μg/mL, respectively. The extract caused a significant reduction of cell motility and colony formation on all evaluated cancer cell lines. In addition, morphological examination displayed cell size reduction, membrane blebbing and detachment of cells, compared to non-treated cancer cell lines. The T. peruviana extract induced apoptotic cell death, which was confirmed by DNA fragmentation and AO/EB double staining. Fractions 4 and 5 showed the most effective cytotoxic activity and their MS analysis revealed the presence of the secondary metabolites: thevetiaflavone and cardiac glycosides. Conclusion: T. peruviana extract has potential as natural anti-cancer product with critical effects in the proliferation, motility, and adhesion of human breast and colorectal cancer cells, and apoptosis induction in human prostate and lung cancer cell lines, with minimal effects on non-tumorigenic cell lines.     Tree growth response to drought partially explains regional-scale growth and mortality patterns in Iberian forests

    Tree-ring data has been widely used to inform about tree growth responses to drought at the individual scale, but less is known about how tree growth sensitivity to drought scales up driving changes in forest dynamics. Here, we related tree-ring growth chronologies and stand-level forest changes in basal area from two independent data sets to test if tree-ring responses to drought match stand forest dynamics (stand basal area growth, ingrowth, and mortality). We assessed if tree growth and changes in forest basal area covary as a function of spatial scale and tree taxa (gymnosperm or angiosperm). To this end, we compared a tree-ring network with stand data from the Spanish National Forest Inventory. We focused on the cumulative impact of drought on tree growth and demography in the period 1981–2005. Drought years were identified by the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index, and their impacts on tree growth by quantifying tree-ring width reductions. We hypothesized that forests with greater drought impacts on tree growth will also show reduced stand basal area growth and ingrowth and enhanced mortality. This is expected to occur in forests dominated by gymnosperms on drought-prone regions. Cumulative growth reductions during dry years were higher in forests dominated by gymnosperms and presented a greater magnitude and spatial autocorrelation than for angiosperms. Cumulative drought-induced tree growth reductions and changes in forest basal area were related, but initial stand density and basal area were the main factors driving changes in basal area. In drought-prone gymnosperm forests, we observed that sites with greater growth reductions had lower stand basal area growth and greater mortality. Consequently, stand basal area, forest growth, and ingrowth in regions with large drought impacts was significantly lower than in regions less impacted by drought. Tree growth sensitivity to drought can be used as a predictor of gymnosperm demographic rates in terms of stand basal area growth and ingrowth at regional scales, but further studies may try to disentangle how initial stand density modulates such relationships.     De novo assembly and transcriptome characterization of the freshwater prawn Palaemonetes argentinus: Implications for a detoxification response

    Palaemonetes argentinus, an abundant freshwater prawn species in the northern and central region of Argentina, has been used as a bioindicator of environmental pollutants as it displays a very high sensitivity to pollutants exposure. Despite their extraordinary ecological relevance, a lack of genomic information has hindered a more thorough understanding of the molecular mechanisms potentially involved in detoxification processes of this species. Thus, transcriptomic profiling studies represent a promising approach to overcome the limitations imposed by the lack of extensive genomic resources for P. argentinus, and may improve the understanding of its physiological and molecular response triggered by pollutants. This work represents the first comprehensive transcriptome-based characterization of the non-model species P. argentinus to generate functional genomic annotations and provides valuable resources for future genetic studies. Trinity de novo assembly consisted of 24,738 transcripts with high representation of detoxification (phase I and II), anti-oxidation, osmoregulation pathways and DNA replication and bioenergetics.     Consenso mexicano sobre dolor torácico no cardiaco

    Introducción: Dolor torácico no cardíaco (DTNC) se define como un síndrome clínico caracte-rizado por dolor retroesternal semejante a la angina de pecho, pero de origen no cardiaco ygenerado por enfermedades esofágicas, osteomusculares, pulmonares o psiquiátricas.Objetivo: Presentar una revisión consensuada basada en evidencias sobre definición, epidemio-logía, fisiopatología, diagnóstico y opciones terapéuticas para pacientes con DTNC.Métodos: Tres coordinadores generales realizaron una revisión bibliográfica de todas las publi-caciones en inglés y espa˜nol sobre el tema y elaboraron 38 enunciados iniciales divididosen tres categorías principales: 1) definiciones, epidemiología y fisiopatología; 2) diagnóstico,y 3) tratamiento. Los enunciados fueron votados (3 rondas) utilizando el sistema Delphi, y losque alcanzaron un acuerdo > 75% fueron considerados y calificados de acuerdo con el sistemaGRADE. Resultados y conclusiones: El consenso final incluyó 29 enunciados Todo paciente que debutacon dolor torácico debe ser inicialmente evaluado por un cardiólogo. La causa más común deDTNC es la enfermedad por reflujo gastroesofágico (ERGE). Como abordaje inicial, si no existensíntomas de alarma, se puede dar una prueba terapéutica con inhibidor de bomba de pro-tones (IBP) por 2-4 semanas. Si hay disfagia o síntomas de alarma, se recomienda hacer unaendoscopia. La manometría de alta resolución es el mejor método para descartar trastornosmotores espásticos y acalasia. La pHmetría ayuda a demostrar exposición esofágica anormal alácido. El tratamiento debe ser dirigido al mecanismo fisiopatológico, y puede incluir IBP, neu-romoduladores y/o relajantes de músculo liso, intervención psicológica y/o terapia cognitiva,y ocasionalmente cirugía o terapia endoscópica. ABSTRACT Introduction: Non-cardiac chest pain is defined as a clinical syndrome characterized by retros-ternal pain similar to that of angina pectoris, but of non-cardiac origin and produced byesophageal, musculoskeletal, pulmonary, or psychiatric diseases.Aim: To present a consensus review based on evidence regarding the definition, epidemiology,pathophysiology, and diagnosis of non-cardiac chest pain, as well as the therapeutic options forthose patients. Methods: Three general coordinators carried out a literature review of all articles published inEnglish and Spanish on the theme and formulated 38 initial statements, dividing them into 3 maincategories: (i) definitions, epidemiology, and pathophysiology; (ii) diagnosis, and (iii) treatment.The statements underwent 3 rounds of voting, utilizing the Delphi system. The final statementswere those that reached > 75% agreement, and they were rated utilizing the GRADE system.Results and conclusions: The final consensus included 29 statements. All patients presentingwith chest pain should initially be evaluated by a cardiologist. The most common cause ofnon-cardiac chest pain is gastroesophageal reflux disease. If there are no alarm symptoms, the initial approach should be a therapeutic trial with a proton pump inhibitor for 2-4 weeks. Ifdysphagia or alarm symptoms are present, endoscopy is recommended. High-resolution mano-metry is the best method for ruling out spastic motor disorders and achalasia and pH monitoringaids in demonstrating abnormal esophageal acid exposure. Treatment should be directed at thepathophysiologic mechanism. It can include proton pump inhibitors, neuromodulators and/orsmooth muscle relaxants, psychologic intervention and/or cognitive therapy, and occasionallysurgery or endoscopic therapy
