    Bicyclic succinic anhydrides alkylated at the Ī±-position have been prepared and submitted to alcoholysis in the presence of alkaloid bases. Anhydrides with a cyclopentane fused ring, open only from the less hindered side, generating monoesters of >80 % ee, whereas cyclohexane fused anhydrides undergo parallel kinetic resolution, producing both regioisomeric monoesters

    Added dietary cobalt or vitamin B12, or injecting vitamin B12 does not improve performance or indicators of ketosis in pre- and post-partum Holstein-Friesian dairy cows

    Vitamin B12 is synthesised in the rumen from cobalt and has a major role in metabolism in the peripaturient period, although few studies have evaluated the effect of the dietary inclusion of cobalt (Co), vitamin B12 or injecting vitamin B12 on the metabolism, health and performance of high yielding dairy cows. Fifty-six Holstein-Friesian dairy cows received one of four treatments from 8 weeks prior to calving to 8 weeks post calving: C, no added Co; DC, additional 0.2 mg Co/kg DM; DB, additional 0.68 mg vitamin B12/kg DM; IB, intra-muscular injection of vitamin B12 to supply 0.71 mg/cow/day pre-partum and 1.42 mg/cow/day post-partum. The basal and lactation rations both contained 0.21 mg Co/kg DM. Cows were weighed and condition scored at drying off, 4 weeks prior to calving, within 24 h of calving and at 2, 4 and 8 weeks post-calving, with blood samples collected at drying off, 2 weeks pre-calving, calving and 2, 4 and 8 weeks post-calving. Liver biopsy samples were collected from all animals at drying off and 4 weeks post-calving. Live weight changed with time, but there was no effect of treatment (P>0.05), whereas cows receiving IB had the lowest mean body condition score and DB the highest (P0.05) with mean values of 21.6 kg/day, 39.6 kg/day and 40.4 g/kg respectively. Cows receiving IB had a higher plasma vitamin B12 concentration than those receiving any of the other treatments (P0.05) of treatment on homocysteine or succinate concentrations, although mean plasma methylmalonic acid concentrations were lower (P=0.019) for cows receiving IB than for Control cows. Plasma Ī²-hydroxybutyrate concentrations increased sharply at calving followed by a decline, but there was no effect of treatment. Similarly, there was no effect (P>0.05) of treatment on plasma non-esterified fatty acids or glucose. Whole tract digestibility of DM and fibre measured at week 7 of lactation were similar between treatments, and there was little effect of treatment on the milk fatty acid profile except for C15:0, which was lower in cows receiving DC than IB (P<0.05). It is concluded that a basal dietary concentration of 0.21 mg Co/kg DM is sufficient to meet the requirements of high yielding dairy cows during the transition period, and there is little benefit from additional Co or vitamin B12

    Poisoning-tolerant metal hydride materials and their application for hydrogen separation from CO2/CO containing gas mixtures

    Metal hydride materials offer attractive solutions in addressing problems associated with hydrogen separation and purification from waste flue gases. However, a challenging problem is the deterioration of hydrogen charging performances resulting from the surface chemical action of electrophilic gases. In this work, the feasibility study of poisoning tolerance of surface modified AB5-type hydride forming materials and their application for hydrogen separation from process gases containing carbon dioxide and monoxide was carried out. Target composition of La(Ni,Co,Mn,Al)5 substrate was chosen to provide maximum reversible hydrogen capacity at the process conditions. The selected substrate alloy has been shown to be effectively surface-modified by fluorination followed by electroless deposition of palladium. The surface-modified material exhibited good coating quality, high cycle stability and minimal deterioration of kinetics of selective hydrogen absorption at room temperature, from gas mixtures containing 10% CO2 and up to 100 ppm CO.     Application of surface-modified metal hydrides for hydrogen separation from gas mixtures containing carbon dioxide and monoxide

    Application of surface-modified MH material for H2 separation using temperature/pressure swing absorptionā€“desorption was studied. The substrate alloy had the following composition LaNi3.55Co0.75Al0.4-Mn0.3, and the surface modification was carried out through fluorination followed by aminosilane functionalization and electroless deposition of Pd. The material was found to have good poisoning tolerance towards surface adsorbates, even for the large (rv1.5 kg) batches. Feasibility of its application for H2 separation from gas mixtures (up to 30% CO2 and 100 ppm CO) was demonstrated by testing of a prototype H2 separation system (rv280 g of MH in two reactors), and H2 separation reactor (0.75 kg of MH). The H2 separation was characterized by stable performances in the duration of 250 absorption/desorption cycles. However, the total process productivity was found to be limited by the sluggish H2 absorption (partial H2 pressure 62.5 bar, temperature below 100 Ā°C).     Young star clusters in M31

    In our study of M31's globular cluster system with MMT/Hectospec, we have obtained high-quality spectra of 85 clusters with ages less than 1 Gyr. With the exception of Hubble V, the young cluster in NGC 205, we find that these young clusters have kinematics and spatial distribution consistent with membership in M31's young disk. Preliminary estimates of the cluster masses and structural parameters, using spectroscopically derived ages and HST imaging, confirms earlier suggestions that M31 has clusters similar to the LMC's young populous clusters.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, contributed talk at "Galaxies in the Local Volume" conference in Sydney, July 200

    Relativistic many-body calculations of electric-dipole matrix elements, lifetimes and polarizabilities in rubidium

    Electric-dipole matrix elements for ns-n'p, nd-n'p, and 6d-4f transitions in Rb are calculated using a relativistic all-order method. A third-order calculation is also carried out for these matrix elements to evaluate the importance of the high-order many-body perturbation theory contributions. The all-order matrix elements are used to evaluate lifetimes of ns and np levels with n=6, 7, 8 and nd levels with n=4, 5, 6 for comparison with experiment and to provide benchmark values for these lifetimes. The dynamic polarizabilities are calculated for ns states of rubidium. The resulting lifetime and polarizability values are compared with available theory and experiment.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    Review of Dental Impression Materials

    Major advances in impression materials and their application have occurred during the last decade, with greater emphasis being placed on rubber impression materials than on dental compound, zinc oxide-eugenol, and agar and alginate. Of particular interest has been the effect of disinfection solutions on the qualities of impressions and the biocompatibility of impression materials. The principal advance in hydrocolloids has been the introduction of the agar/alginate impression technique, which has simplified the procedure and improved the quality of gypsum dies compared with those prepared in alginate impressions. The tear strength of some alginates has been improved, and some have been formulated so that the powder is dustless, thus reducing the health hazard as a result of patient inhalation of dust during the dispensing process. Polyether and silicone impression materials have been modified so that the working time, viscosity, and flexibility of the polyethers have been improved and, with the introduction of addition silicones, their accuracy has become exceptional. Although the early addition silicones liberated hydrogen after setting, thus delaying the pouring of models and dies, most addition silicones have been improved so that no hydrogen is released and dies can be poured immediately. The introduction of automatic mixing systems for addition silicones has simplified their manipulation, has reduced the number of voids in impressions, and has reduced the amount of material wasted. The incorporation of surfactants into addition silicones has made them hydrophilic, with wetting properties similar to those of polyethers, and has made pouring bubble-free gypsum dies easier. This review is confined to published and unpublished information of the past decade. It will also suggest trends that should be anticipated in the near future based on this information.     Colonic fermentation ā€“ more than meets the nose

    Fermentation of undigested foods in the colon by its resident bacteria affects not only colonic health (protection against inflammation and tumour formation) but also influences metabolic health. Studying fermentation directly is difficult for lack of access. We hypothesise that the anatomical structure of the colon is suited to act as a fermenting chamber with the gaseous molecules (VOCs) emitted having direct effects on the colonocytes as well as gut neural and metabolic effects. We refer to this complex system as the ā€˜fermentomeā€™, and further hypothesise that alteration in the ā€˜fermentomeā€™ through dietary modification will have a direct impact on colonic as well as metabolic health and disease. The VOCs emitted may play a role in bacterial chemical signalling within the colon but importantly could also function as a ā€˜gasā€™ biomarker. Measurement of such VOCs through non-invasive methods would have important application as a hypothesis-generating tool with subsequent clinical application
