The structure of the shell and polar plugs of the egg of the whipworm, Trichuris trichiura (Nematoda : Trichuridae) from the Samango monkey (Cercopithecus albogularis)
The structure of the shell of the egg of Trichuris trichiura was examined using light microscopy as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results confirmed its three-layered structure and provided evidence that the cores of the polar plugs, which could be seen to be extensions of the shell's middle layer, could be lost en bloc, either mechanically or chemically, and in this way probably provided an exit for the first stage larva at hatching.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.

18S rRNA is a reliable normalisation gene for real time PCR based on influenza virus infected cells
Background: One requisite of quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) is to normalise the data with an
internal reference gene that is invariant regardless of treatment, such as virus infection. Several studies have found
variability in the expression of commonly used housekeeping genes, such as beta-actin (ACTB) and
glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), under different experimental settings. However, ACTB and
GAPDH remain widely used in the studies of host gene response to virus infections, including influenza viruses. To
date no detailed study has been described that compares the suitability of commonly used housekeeping genes in
influenza virus infections. The present study evaluated several commonly used housekeeping genes [ACTB, GAPDH,
18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA), ATP synthase, H+ transporting, mitochondrial F1 complex, beta polypeptide (ATP5B)
and ATP synthase, H+ transporting, mitochondrial Fo complex, subunit C1 (subunit 9) (ATP5G1)] to identify the most
stably expressed gene in human, pig, chicken and duck cells infected with a range of influenza A virus subtypes.
Results: The relative expression stability of commonly used housekeeping genes were determined in primary
human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs), pig tracheal epithelial cells (PTECs), and chicken and duck primary
lung-derived cells infected with five influenza A virus subtypes. Analysis of qRT-PCR data from virus and mock
infected cells using NormFinder and BestKeeper software programmes found that 18S rRNA was the most stable
gene in HBECs, PTECs and avian lung cells.
Conclusions: Based on the presented data from cell culture models (HBECs, PTECs, chicken and duck lung cells)
infected with a range of influenza viruses, we found that 18S rRNA is the most stable reference gene for normalising
qRT-PCR data. Expression levels of the other housekeeping genes evaluated in this study (including ACTB and
GPADH) were highly affected by influenza virus infection and hence are not reliable as reference genes for RNA
normalisation
The Soft X-Ray Properties of a Complete Sample of Optically Selected Quasars II. Final Results
We present the final results of a ROSAT PSPC program to study the soft X-ray
emission properties of a complete sample of low quasars. The main results
are: 1. There is no evidence for significant soft excess emission or excess
foreground absorption by cold gas in 22 of the 23 quasars. 2. The mean 0.2-2
keV continuum of quasars agrees remarkably well with an extrapolation of the
mean 1050-350A continuum recently determined by Zheng et al. (1996), indicating
that there is no steep soft component below 0.2 keV. 3. The occurrence of warm
absorbers in quasars is rather rare, in sharp contrast to lower luminosity AGN.
4. The strongest correlation found is between the spectral slope, alpha_x, and
the Hb FWHM. This remarkably strong correlation may result from a dependence of
alpha_x on L/L_Edd, as seen in Galactic black hole candidates. 5. There appears
to exist a distinct class of ``X-ray weak'' quasars. These may be quasars where
the direct X-ray source is obscured, and only scattered X-rays are observed. 6.
Thin accretion disk models cannot reproduce the observed optical to soft X-ray
spectral shape. An as yet unknown physical mechanism maintains a strong
correlation between the optical and soft X-ray emission. 7. The well known
difference in alpha_x between radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars may be due
only to their different Hb FWHM. 8. The agreement of the 21 cm and X-ray
columns implies that He in the diffuse H II component of the Galactic ISM is

Pilot Study to Assess the Effectiveness of the Sustainable Culturally adaptive Nutrition Program (Scan) to Improve adherence to the National Diabetes Prevention Program
PURPOSE: The Sustainable Culturally Adapted Nutrition Program (SCAN) is a novel adaptation to the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) that aims to improve attendance and effectiveness. This paper presents its feasibility and impact through the initial 6-month outcomes.
DESIGN: A pragmatic quasi-experimental pilot study with intervention (DPP plus SCAN) and control (DPP only) groups.
SAMPLES AND INCLUSION CRITERIA: Sustainable Culturally Adapted Nutrition Program participants were recruited from federally qualified health center (FQHC) clinic patients enrolled in a NDPP in Houston, Texas. Participants needed to be (1) ≥18 years old, (2) body mass index \u3e25, (3) no prior diagnosis of diabetes, and (4) not pregnant.
INTERVENTION: Sustainable Culturally Adapted Nutrition Program cooking classes were designed to teach skills to prepare fresh produce, and utilized Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques to encourage participants to adapt these skills for foods that were culturally important to them.
OUTCOME MEASURES: (1) National Diabetes Prevention Program attendance, (2) BMI and (3) percent weight loss.
ANALYSIS: We used linear mixed models to test the association between weights and NDPP attendance.
RESULTS: 22 intervention and 15 control participants completed the program to the 6-month point. Intervention participants had increased DPP attendance over controls (7.14 vs 6.87 session). Intervention participants also demonstrated on average, 1.5% weight loss for each additional SCAN class attended (
CONCLUSIONS: The SCAN adaptation shows promising results for effectively increasing both NDPP attendance and weight loss
The Spectral Energy Distributions of Red 2MASS AGN
We present infrared (IR) to X-ray spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 44
red AGN selected from the 2MASS survey on the basis of their red J-K color
(>2 mag) and later observed by Chandra. In comparison with optically-, radio-,
and X-ray selected AGN, their median SEDs are red in the optical and near-IR
with little/no blue bump. It thus seems that near-IR color selection isolates
the reddest subset of AGN that can be classified optically. The shape of the
SEDs is generally consistent with modest absorption by gas (in the X-ray) and
dust (in the optical-IR). The levels of obscuration, estimated from X-rays,
far-IR and our detailed optical/near-IR color modeling are all consistent
implying N_H < few*10^{22} cm^{-2}. We present SED models that show how the AGN
optical/near-IR colors change due to differing amounts of reddening, AGN to
host galaxy ratio, redshift and scattered light emission and apply them to the
sources in the sample. We find that the 2MASS AGN optical color, B-R, and to a
lesser extent the near-IR color, J-K, are strongly affected by reddening,
host galaxy emission, redshift, and in few, highly polarized objects, also by
scattered AGN light. The obscuration/inclination of the AGN allows us to see

MS AHI1 genetic risk promotes IFNγ+ CD4+ T cells
Objective: To study the influence of the Abelson helper integration site 1 (AHI1) locus associated with MS susceptibility on CD4+ T cell function. Methods: We characterized the chromatin state of T cells in the MS-associated AHI1 linkage disequilibrium (LD) block. The expression and the role of the AHI1 variant were examined in T cells from genotyped healthy subjects who were recruited from the PhenoGenetic Project, and the function of AHI1 was explored using T cells from Ahi1 knockout mice. Results: Chromatin state analysis reveals that the LD block containing rs4896153, which is robustly associated with MS susceptibility (odds ratio 1.15, p = 1.65 × 10−13), overlaps with strong enhancer regions that are present in human naive and memory CD4+ T cells. Relative to the rs4896153A protective allele, the rs4896153T susceptibility allele is associated with decreased AHI1 mRNA expression, specifically in naive CD4+ T cells (p = 1.73 × 10−74, n = 213), and we replicate this effect in an independent set of subjects (p = 2.5 × 10−9, n = 32). Functional studies then showed that the rs4896153T risk variant and the subsequent decreased AHI1 expression were associated with reduced CD4+ T cell proliferation and a specific differentiation into interferon gamma (IFNγ)–positive T cells when compared with the protective rs4896153A allele. This T cell phenotype was also observed in murine CD4+ T cells with genetic deletion of Ahi1. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the effect of the AHI1 genetic risk for MS is mediated, in part, by enhancing the development of proinflammatory IFNγ+ T cells that have previously been implicated in MS and its mouse models
'The guy might not even be able to remember why he's here and what he's in here for and why he's locked in': residents and prison staff experiences of living and working alongside people with dementia who are serving prison sentences for a sexual offence
Prison staff and residents with sexual convictions, from two UK prisons, were interviewed to explore their understanding and experiences of dementia. The aim was to explore understanding and experiences of dementia in response to Governor-identified needs in the prisons. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirteen prisoners and seventeen prison staff across both prisons, all of whom had direct prisoner contact. Transcripts of the interviews were created and thematic analysis was carried out. Four superordinate themes emerged from the data. The first theme, 'Balancing act', explored the way that individuals with dementia should be encouraged to be independent whilst still meeting their need for support in some tasks and areas of functioning. The second theme, 'Challenges and confusion' explored the way that dementia symptoms might be masked in prison settings, how they can be misinterpreted and the impact and understanding of inappropriate behaviour in a prison for those with sexual convictions. 'What works and what doesn't' in a prison setting formed the basis of the third theme, with the final theme, 'Who to tell?' exploring the transfer of information and the sources of support available in the prisons. The Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
This paper describes the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS), marking the completion of the original goals of the SDSS and the end of
the phase known as SDSS-II. It includes 11663 deg^2 of imaging data, with most
of the roughly 2000 deg^2 increment over the previous data release lying in
regions of low Galactic latitude. The catalog contains five-band photometry for
357 million distinct objects. The survey also includes repeat photometry over
250 deg^2 along the Celestial Equator in the Southern Galactic Cap. A
coaddition of these data goes roughly two magnitudes fainter than the main
survey. The spectroscopy is now complete over a contiguous area of 7500 deg^2
in the Northern Galactic Cap, closing the gap that was present in previous data
releases. There are over 1.6 million spectra in total, including 930,000
galaxies, 120,000 quasars, and 460,000 stars. The data release includes
improved stellar photometry at low Galactic latitude. The astrometry has all
been recalibrated with the second version of the USNO CCD Astrograph Catalog
(UCAC-2), reducing the rms statistical errors at the bright end to 45
milli-arcseconds per coordinate. A systematic error in bright galaxy photometr
is less severe than previously reported for the majority of galaxies. Finally,
we describe a series of improvements to the spectroscopic reductions, including
better flat-fielding and improved wavelength calibration at the blue end,
better processing of objects with extremely strong narrow emission lines, and
