The sound of an axon's growth

Axons are linear processes of nerve cells that can range from a few tens of micrometers up to meters in length. In addition to external cues, the length of an axon is also regulated by unknown internal mechanisms. Molecular motors have been suggested to generate oscillations with an axon length-dependent frequency that could be used to measure an axon's extension. Here, we present a mechanism that depends on the spectral decomposition of the oscillatory signal to determine the axon length.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

E-Government um jeden Preis?. Aktuelle Vorhaben zur Einführung der IT-gestützten Vorgangsbearbeitung und der digitalen Signatur im Freistaat Sachsen

Die digitale Speicherung von Informationen nimmt in öffentlichen wie privaten Verwaltungen einen immer größeren Stellenwert ein. Daher müssen sich Archive schon frühzeitig an der Implementierung von Dokumentenmanagementsystemen beteiligen, um auch in Zukunft historisch wertvolle digitale Unterlagen an kommende Generationen in authentischer Form weitergeben zu können. Unter dem Titel „Digitales Verwalten - Digitales Archivieren“ veranstaltete das Staatsarchiv Hamburg am 27. und 28. April 2004 die achte Tagung des Arbeitskreises „Archivierung von Unterlagen aus digitalen Systemen“. In ihm sind Archivare aus Staats- und Kommunalarchiven, aus Wirtschafts- und Kirchenarchiven Deutschlands, Österreichs und der Schweiz vertreten. Der archivische Umgang mit digitalen Unterlagen, die Erhaltung der Authentizität und die Langzeitspeicherung elektronischer Signaturen sind die bestimmenden Themen der 16 Beiträge, die in diesem Band dokumentiert sind.Digital storage of information is becoming increasingly important in public and private administration. Archives must therefore participate at an early stage in the implementation of content management systems in order to be able to pass on historically valuable digital documents to future generations in an authentic form. The eighth conference of the working group "Archiving of documents from digital systems" was organised by the Hamburg State Archives on 27 and 28 April 2004 under the title "Digital administration - digital archiving". It includes archivists from state and municipal archives, business and church archives in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The archival handling of digital documents, the preservation of authenticity and the long-term storage of electronic signatures are the defining themes of the 16 contributions documented in this volume

Personal Space in Social VR: Aushandlungen physisch-digitaler Territorien des Selbst

Interaktionstheorien sehen den menschlichen Körper als Ankerpunkt sozialer Situationen. In solchen handeln und kommunizieren Körper nicht nur, sondern sind auch ein räumlich-strukturierendes Element und stellen somit soziale Nah- und Distanzverständnisse wie -praktiken her. In einer von tiefgreifenden Mediatisierungsschüben geprägten Gegenwart (Hepp 2021) entstehen zunehmend Situationen delokalisierter körperlicher Ko-Präsenz. Durch in Social VR-Plattformen übliche Körpervermessung steigert sich die interaktionale Komplexität von Körper- und Raumvorstellungen enorm: Physische und avatarielle Körper wie Umwelten fallen phänomenal zusammen und müssen trotz Widerständigkeiten in Einklang gebracht werden. Entstehende Synchronisationsprozesse lassen sich eindrücklich anhand der Wahrnehmung, Konstruktion und interaktionalen Aushandlung von Personal Space in Social VR erkennen. Im Anschluss an Erving Goffman untersucht dieser Beitrag avatariell-körperliche Wirkungsbereiche und liefert Einblicke in mediatisierte ko-präsente Nähe. Es wird gezeigt, welche Rolle digital-physische Territorien des Selbst – in ihrer technischen wie sozialen Ausprägung – einnehmen und wie sich Handlungsräume, Körper und leiblich-affektive Wahrnehmung in VR-Situationen wechselseitig bestimmen. Für unsere Analyse greifen wir auf ethnographische Beobachtungen und Interviews zurück, die wir seit 2018 in VRChat durchführen

Work accidents during cable yarding operations in Central Europe 2006 – 2014

Aim of study: This study is focused on detailed analysis of accidents in yarding during the years 2006–2014. There is still not enough information about such accidents in Central Europe in the literature available. Area of study: We collected the data on occupational accidents recorded in timber yarding from the databases of the Slovak state forest enterprise. Material and Methods: The data on occupational accidents were recorded according to actual European Regulation, the form of the record meets the requirements of the ESAW (European Statistics on Accidents at Work) methodology. To analyze the data, we used the multiple regression and correlation analysis, contingency tables, and a χ2 –test. Main results: Almost half of the accidents were the foot injuries and the most frequent type of injury was fracture of a bone. The most hazardous operation was yarding. Most of the accidents occurred between 1301-1400 h (22 %). The most frequent agent causing accidents were Particles, dust, splinters, fragments, etc. (14.05 by ESAW). Research highlights: This study informs about the most important risk factors in timber yarding, the most hazardous parts of shift, as well as the days when the most accidents occur during the week, and as such contributes to better understanding of how the accidents happen in timber yarding. The information can be subsequently used in knowledge-based improvement of safety trainings in forest enterprises
