    The viscosity of magmatic silicate liquids: A model for calculation

    A simple model has been designed to allow reasonably accurate calculations of viscosity as a function of temperature and composition. The problem of predicting viscosities of anhydrous silicate liquids has been investigated since such viscosity numbers are applicable to many extrusive melts and to nearly dry magmatic liquids in general. The fluidizing action of water dissolved in silicate melts is well recognized and it is now possible to predict the effect of water content on viscosity in a semiquantitative way. Water was not incorporated directly into the model. Viscosities of anhydrous compositions were calculated, and, where necessary, the effect of added water and estimated. The model can be easily modified to incorporate the effect of water whenever sufficient additional data are accumulated

    Critical Behavior of Light

    Light is shown to exhibit critical and tricritical behavior in passive mode-locked lasers with externally injected pulses. It is a first and unique example of critical phenomena in a one-dimensional many body light-mode system. The phase diagrams consist of regimes with continuous wave, driven para-pulses, spontaneous pulses via mode condensation, and heterogeneous pulses, separated by phase transition lines which terminate with critical or tricritical points. Enhanced nongaussian fluctuations and collective dynamics are observed at the critical and tricritical points, showing a mode system analog of the critical opalescence phenomenon. The critical exponents are calculated and shown to comply with the mean field theory, which is rigorous in the light system.Comment: RevTex, 5 pages, 3 figure

Two spectral filtering techniques suitable for these simulations have been implemented.     PublishedArticleIntroduction: The aim of this study was to test the naturally occurring organosulfur compound dipropyltetrasulfide (DPTTS) found in plants, which has antibiotic and anti-cancer properties, as a treatment of HOCl-induced systemic sclerosis in the mouse. Methods: The pro-oxidative, anti-proliferative and cytotoxic effects of DPTTS were evaluated ex vivo on fibroblasts from normal and HOCl-mice. In vivo, the anti-fibrotic and immunomodulating properties of DPTTS were evaluated in the skin and lungs of HOCl-mice. Results: H2O2 production was higher in fibroblasts derived from HOCl-mice than in normal fibroblasts (P<0.05). DPTTS did not increase H2O2 production in normal fibroblasts, but DPTTS dose-dependently increased H2O2 production in HOCl-fibroblasts (P<0.001 with 40μM DPTTS). Because H2O2 reached a lethal threshold in cells from HOCl-mice, the anti-proliferative, cytotoxic and pro-apoptotic effects of DPTTS were significantly higher in HOCl-fibroblasts than for normal fibroblasts. In vivo, DPTTS decreased dermal thickness (P<0.001), collagen content in skin (P<0.01) and lungs (P<0.05), SMA (P<0.01) and pSMAD2/3 (P<0.01) expression in skin, formation of advanced oxidation protein products and anti-DNA topoisomerase-1 antibodies in serum (P<0.05) versus untreated HOCl- mice. Moreover, in HOCl-mice, DPTTS reduced splenic B cell counts (P<0.01), the proliferative rates of B-splenocytes stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (P<0.05) and T-splenocytes stimulated by anti-CD3/CD28 mAb (P<0.001). Ex vivo, it also reduced the production of IL-4 and IL-13 by activated T cells (P<0.05 in both cases). Conclusions: The natural organosulfur compound DPTTS prevents skin and lung fibrosis in the mouse through the selective killing of diseased fibroblasts and its immunomodulating properties.     Electronic transport in EuB6_6

    EuB6_6 is a magnetic semiconductor in which defects introduce charge carriers into the conduction band with the Fermi energy varying with temperature and magnetic field. We present experimental and theoretical work on the electronic magnetotransport in single-crystalline EuB6_6. Magnetization, magnetoresistance and Hall effect data were recorded at temperatures between 2 and 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 5.5 T. The negative magnetoresistance is well reproduced by a model in which the spin disorder scattering is reduced by the applied magnetic field. The Hall effect can be separated into an ordinary and an anomalous part. At 20 K the latter accounts for half of the observed Hall voltage, and its importance decreases rapidly with increasing temperature. As for Gd and its compounds, where the rare-earth ion adopts the same Hund's rule ground state as Eu2+^{2+} in EuB6_{6}, the standard antisymmetric scattering mechanisms underestimate the sizesize of this contribution by several orders of magnitude, while reproducing its shapeshape almost perfectly. Well below the bulk ferromagnetic ordering at TCT_C = 12.5 K, a two-band model successfully describes the magnetotransport. Our description is consistent with published de Haas van Alphen, optical reflectivity, angular-resolved photoemission, and soft X-ray emission as well as absorption data, but requires a new interpretation for the gap feature deduced from the latter two experiments.Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, submitted to PR

    In this paper we discuss Hausdorff and packing measures of random continuous trees called stable trees. Stable trees form a specific class of L\'evy trees (introduced by Le Gall and Le Jan in 1998) that contains Aldous's continuum random tree (1991) which corresponds to the Brownian case. We provide results for the whole stable trees and for their level sets that are the sets of points situated at a given distance from the root. We first show that there is no exact packing measure for levels sets. We also prove that non-Brownian stable trees and their level sets have no exact Hausdorff measure with regularly varying gauge function, which continues previous results from a joint work with J-F Le Gall (2006).Comment: 40 page
