Being an Athlete or Being a Girl: Selective Identities among Fictional Female Athletes Who Play with the Boys
This article examines the experiences of female protagonists who join all-male teams in recently published middle grade and young adult sports fiction. Two frames of analysis, identity and intersectionality, are applied in examining the question of how female protagonists navigate girlhood identities given their nontraditional sports participation on historically male teams. Findings suggest that as the fictional female athletes move into male-dominated spaces, they must reconceptualize their identities within either/or binaries that reaffirm gendered expectations and that these binaries ignore the complicated multiplicity of identities and their associated privileges and oppressions.</p
Genetic therapies for cardiomyopathy: survey of attitudes of the patient community for the CureHeart project
Cardiomyopathies are a group of inherited heart muscle disorders. Expressivity is variable and while sometimes mild, complications can result in sudden cardiac death (SCD) at any age, heart failure and stroke. In around a third of patients a monogenic cause is identifiable, and development of genetic therapies that aim to correct the underlying genetic defect is underway. Here we describe results of a survey designed to understand preliminary views of the patient community about genetic therapies in the context of disease burden. The internet survey was publicized with a bespoke information video via patient support groups in the UK and USA; 634 people responded of whom 96% had a personal and/or family history of cardiomyopathy. Findings show that concern about cardiomyopathy-related issues with a future dimension, such as disease progression, is significantly greater than concern about current issues. A total of 93.6% thought that genetic therapies should be developed for cardiomyopathy. A majority would consider participation in a genetic therapy trial in six scenarios varying by age and clinical situation significantly more in the scenario of an adult with symptomatic disease and evident progression than an asymptomatic adult with SCD risk, or a child. In all scenarios, a majority said that the chance genetic therapy would stop or slow progression, and risk of serious adverse and unintended effects, were important considerations. Qualitative analysis of free-text responses found that concern was often informed by family experience. Patient consideration of genetic therapy is likely to require individualized assessment of the benefits and risks
Architecture and Information Requirements to Assess and Predict Flight Safety Risks During Highly Autonomous Urban Flight Operations
As aviation adopts new and increasingly complex operational paradigms, vehicle types, and technologies to broaden airspace capability and efficiency, maintaining a safe system will require recognition and timely mitigation of new safety issues as they emerge and before significant consequences occur. A shift toward a more predictive risk mitigation capability becomes critical to meet this challenge. In-time safety assurance comprises monitoring, assessment, and mitigation functions that proactively reduce risk in complex operational environments where the interplay of hazards may not be known (and therefore not accounted for) during design. These functions can also help to understand and predict emergent effects caused by the increased use of automation or autonomous functions that may exhibit unexpected non-deterministic behaviors. The envisioned monitoring and assessment functions can look for precursors, anomalies, and trends (PATs) by applying model-based and data-driven methods. Outputs would then drive downstream mitigation(s) if needed to reduce risk. These mitigations may be accomplished using traditional design revision processes or via operational (and sometimes automated) mechanisms. The latter refers to the in-time aspect of the system concept. This report comprises architecture and information requirements and considerations toward enabling such a capability within the domain of low altitude highly autonomous urban flight operations. This domain may span, for example, public-use surveillance missions flown by small unmanned aircraft (e.g., infrastructure inspection, facility management, emergency response, law enforcement, and/or security) to transportation missions flown by larger aircraft that may carry passengers or deliver products. Caveat: Any stated requirements in this report should be considered initial requirements that are intended to drive research and development (R&D). These initial requirements are likely to evolve based on R&D findings, refinement of operational concepts, industry advances, and new industry or regulatory policies or standards related to safety assurance
Evaluation of Harmful Algal Bloom Outreach Activities
With an apparent increase of harmful algal blooms (HABs) worldwide, healthcare providers, public health personnel and coastal managers are struggling to provide scientifically-based appropriately-targeted HAB outreach and education. Since 1998, the Florida Poison Information Center-Miami, with its 24 hour/365 day/year free Aquatic Toxins Hotline (1–888–232–8635) available in several languages, has received over 25,000 HAB-related calls. As part of HAB surveillance, all possible cases of HAB-related illness among callers are reported to the Florida Health Department. This pilot study evaluated an automated call processing menu system that allows callers to access bilingual HAB information, and to speak directly with a trained Poison Information Specialist. The majority (68%) of callers reported satisfaction with the information, and many provided specific suggestions for improvement. This pilot study, the first known evaluation of use and satisfaction with HAB educational outreach materials, demonstrated that the automated system provided useful HAB-related information for the majority of callers, and decreased the routine informational call workload for the Poison Information Specialists, allowing them to focus on callers needing immediate assistance and their healthcare providers. These results will lead to improvement of this valuable HAB outreach, education and surveillance tool. Formal evaluation is recommended for future HAB outreach and educational materials

An Anti-HIV-1 V3 Loop Antibody Fully Protects Cross-Clade and Elicits T-Cell Immunity in Macaques Mucosally Challenged with an R5 Clade C SHIV
Neutralizing antibodies have been shown to protect macaques against SHIV challenge. However, genetically diverse HIV-1 clades have evolved, and a key question left unanswered is whether neutralizing antibodies can confer cross-clade protection in vivo. The novel human monoclonal antibody HGN194 was isolated from an individual infected with an HIV-1 clade AG recombinant circulating recombinant form (CRF). HGN194 targets an epitope in the third hypervariable loop (V3) of HIV-1 gp120 and neutralizes a range of relatively neutralization-sensitive and resistant viruses. We evaluated the potential of HGN194 to protect infant rhesus monkeys against a SHIV encoding a primary CCR5-tropic HIV-1 clade C envelope. After high-dose mucosal challenge, all untreated controls became highly viremic while all HGN194-treated animals (50 mg/kg) were completely protected. When HGN194 was given at 1 mg/kg, one out of two monkeys remained aviremic, whereas the other had delayed, lower peak viremia. Interestingly, all protected monkeys given high-dose HGN194 developed Gag-specific proliferative responses of both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. To test whether generation of the latter involved cryptic infection, we ablated CD8+ cells after HGN194 clearance. No viremia was detected in any protected monkeys, thus ruling out virus reservoirs. Thus, induction of CD8 T-cell immunity may have resulted from transient “Hit and Run” infection or cross priming via Ag-Ab-mediated cross-presentation. Together, our data identified the HGN194 epitope as protective and provide proof-of-concept that this anti-V3 loop mAb can prevent infection with sterilizing immunity after challenge with virus of a different clade, implying that V3 is a potential vaccine target
