    Pengenalan Nursery Rhymes sebagai Media Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi Guru TK di Kelurahan Sukorejo

    Tujuan dari pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah memperkenalkan guru taman kanak-kanak (TK) pada nursery rhymes sebagai media dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris bagi anak-anak TK. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan adanya hasil observasi dan survey yang dilakukan oleh tim pengabdian pada beberapa TK di kelurahan Sukorejo-Gunungpati, Jawa Tengah. Survey sebelumnya menungkap bahwa para guru TK masih menggunakan media gambar sederhana dan metode dril dalam memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris ke siswa mereka. Sayangnya, para guru TK tersebut masih melakukan kesalahan dalam pengucapan selama praktik drilling. Untuk itulah, penting untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut melalui kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Dengan melakukan serangkaian pelatihan, tim pengabdi kepada masyarakat mengajak dua puluh guru TK yang dating dari beberapa TK di Sukorejo untuk berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan ini. Berdasarkan hasil pelatihan yang telah dilaksanakan, para guru TK sangat tertarik pada penggunaan nursery rhymes dalam memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris bagi siswa mereka. Hal ini dikarenakan para guru menganggap bahwa nursery rhymes merupakan media yang sangat tepat dan cocok dengan karakter siswa di TK. Dalam sesi praktik, para guru TK dapat mengimplementasikan bagaimana menggunakan nursery rhymes di kelas mereka. Hal ini menunjukan bahwa kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat berjalan dengan baik

    The Study of Psycho-demographic Factors Associated With Suicidal Thoughts in Poly-drug Users

    Abstract Background: Patients suffering from suicidal behaviors among substance abusers are common. Although our knowledge about substance abuse and suicidal behavior is increasing, we lack sufficient knowledge about factors associating suicidal thoughts or behaviors and substance abuse. Objective: This study aimed to examine the associative factors of suicidal thoughts among poly-substance abusers. Methods: This is a case control comparative study on 239 subjects between 18 and 45 years of age. We reviewed 122 individuals who fulfilled the DSM-IV -TR criteria of substance abuse for two or more substances, and their data were compared with that collected from 117 control persons. Participants` detailed demographic, clinical evaluation and laboratory investigations were conducted and they were administered semi-structured psychiatric interview and examination, on almost the tenth day after admission. Results: Suicidal cases were 64.75% of poly-substance abusers. Statistically significant relation to suicidal thoughts (p<0.05) was found in older age, living in high altitude, being not married, working in nonprofessional jobs, lower educational level, presence of academic or occupational deterioration, history of legal troubles, younger age of initiation of cigarette smoking, duration of substance abuse, bereavement before age of 18, disturbed home atmosphere, poor family support, positive family history of substance abuse and positive family history of suicidal attempts. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that associative psycho-demographic factors characterized by chaotic social life and living in high altitude in addition to long duration of substance abuse may trigger suicidal thoughts in poly-substance abusers, and that religious upbringing is a helpful method for protection

    Outbreak of Aeromonas hydrophila wound infections association with mud football

    On 16 February 2002, a total of 26 people presented to the emergency department of the local hospital in the rural town of Collie in southwest Western Australia with many infected scratches and pustules distributed over their bodies. All of the patients had participated in a “mud football” competition the previous day, in which there had been 100 participants. One patient required removal of an infected thumbnail, and another required surgical debridement of an infected toe. Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from all 3 patients from whom swab specimens were obtained. To prepare the mud football fields, a paddock was irrigated with water that was pumped from an adjacent river during the 1-month period before the competition. A. hydrophila was subsequently isolated from a water sample obtained from the river.     Application of the speed-duration relationship to normalize the intensity of high-intensity interval training

    The tolerable duration of continuous high-intensity exercise is determined by the hyperbolic Speed-tolerable duration (S-tLIM) relationship. However, application of the S-tLIM relationship to normalize the intensity of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has yet to be considered, with this the aim of present study. Subjects completed a ramp-incremental test, and series of 4 constant-speed tests to determine the S-tLIM relationship. A sub-group of subjects (n = 8) then repeated 4 min bouts of exercise at the speeds predicted to induce intolerance at 4 min (WR4), 6 min (WR6) and 8 min (WR8), interspersed with bouts of 4 min recovery, to the point of exercise intolerance (fixed WR HIIT) on different days, with the aim of establishing the work rate that could be sustained for 960 s (i.e. 4×4 min). A sub-group of subjects (n = 6) also completed 4 bouts of exercise interspersed with 4 min recovery, with each bout continued to the point of exercise intolerance (maximal HIIT) to determine the appropriate protocol for maximizing the amount of high-intensity work that can be completed during 4×4 min HIIT. For fixed WR HIIT tLIM of HIIT sessions was 399±81 s for WR4, 892±181 s for WR6 and 1517±346 s for WR8, with total exercise durations all significantly different from each other (P<0.050). For maximal HIIT, there was no difference in tLIM of each of the 4 bouts (Bout 1: 229±27 s; Bout 2: 262±37 s; Bout 3: 235±49 s; Bout 4: 235±53 s; P>0.050). However, there was significantly less high-intensity work completed during bouts 2 (153.5±40. 9 m), 3 (136.9±38.9 m), and 4 (136.7±39.3 m), compared with bout 1 (264.9±58.7 m; P>0.050). These data establish that WR6 provides the appropriate work rate to normalize the intensity of HIIT between subjects. Maximal HIIT provides a protocol which allows the relative contribution of the work rate profile to physiological adaptations to be considered during alternative intensity-matched HIIT protocols

    Proteolytic and nonproteolytic activation mechanisms result in conformationally and functionally different forms of coagulation factor XIII A

    Factor XIIIA (FXIIIA) is a transglutaminase that cross‐links intra‐ and extracellular protein substrates. FXIIIA is expressed as an inactive zymogen, and during blood coagulation, it is activated by removal of an activation peptide by the protease thrombin. No such proteolytic FXIIIA activation is known to occur in other tissues or the intracellular form of FXIIIA. For those locations, FXIIIA is assumed instead to undergo activation by Ca2+ ions. Previously, we demonstrated a monomeric state for active FXIIIA. Current analytical ultracentrifugation and kinetic experiments revealed that thrombin‐activated FXIIIA has a higher conformational flexibility and a stronger affinity toward glutamine substrate than does nonproteolytically activated FXIIIA. The proteolytic activation of FXIIIA was further investigated in a context of fibrin clotting. In a series of fibrin cross‐linking assays and scanning electron microscopy studies of plasma clots, the activation rates of FXIIIA V34X variants were correlated with the extent of fibrin cross‐linking and incorporation of nonfibrous protein into the clot. Overall, the results suggest conformational and functional differences between active FXIIIA forms, thus expanding the understanding of FXIIIA function. Those differences may serve as a basis for developing therapeutic strategies to target FXIIIA in different physiological environments

    Investigating hyper-vigilance for social threat of lonely children

    The hypothesis that lonely children show hypervigilance for social threat was examined in a series of three studies that employed different methods including advanced eye-tracking technology. Hypervigilance for social threat was operationalized as hostility to ambiguously motivated social exclusion in a variation of the hostile attribution paradigm (Study 1), scores on the Children’s Rejection-Sensitivity Questionnaire (Study 2), and visual attention to socially rejecting stimuli (Study 3). The participants were 185 children (11 years-7 months to 12 years-6 months), 248 children (9 years-4 months to 11 years-8 months) and 140 children (8 years-10 months to 12 years-10 months) in the three studies, respectively. Regression analyses showed that, with depressive symptoms covaried, there were quadratic relations between loneliness and these different measures of hypervigilance to social threat. As hypothesized, only children in the upper range of loneliness demonstrated elevated hostility to ambiguously motivated social exclusion, higher scores on the rejection sensitivity questionnaire, and disengagement difficulties when viewing socially rejecting stimuli.     The missense of smell: functional variability in the human odorant receptor repertoire.

    Humans have ~400 intact odorant receptors, but each individual has a unique set of genetic variations that lead to variation in olfactory perception. We used a heterologous assay to determine how often genetic polymorphisms in odorant receptors alter receptor function. We identified agonists for 18 odorant receptors and found that 63% of the odorant receptors we examined had polymorphisms that altered in vitro function. On average, two individuals have functional differences at over 30% of their odorant receptor alleles. To show that these in vitro results are relevant to olfactory perception, we verified that variations in OR10G4 genotype explain over 15% of the observed variation in perceived intensity and over 10% of the observed variation in perceived valence for the high-affinity in vitro agonist guaiacol but do not explain phenotype variation for the lower-affinity agonists vanillin and ethyl vanillin

    A two-domain elevator mechanism for sodium/proton antiport

    Sodium/proton (Na+/H+) antiporters, located at the plasma membrane in every cell, are vital for cell homeostasis1. In humans, their dysfunction has been linked to diseases, such as hypertension, heart failure and epilepsy, and they are well-established drug targets2. The best understood model system for Na+/H+ antiport is NhaA from Escherichia coli1, 3, for which both electron microscopy and crystal structures are available4, 5, 6. NhaA is made up of two distinct domains: a core domain and a dimerization domain. In the NhaA crystal structure a cavity is located between the two domains, providing access to the ion-binding site from the inward-facing surface of the protein1, 4. Like many Na+/H+ antiporters, the activity of NhaA is regulated by pH, only becoming active above pH 6.5, at which point a conformational change is thought to occur7. The only reported NhaA crystal structure so far is of the low pH inactivated form4. Here we describe the active-state structure of a Na+/H+ antiporter, NapA from Thermus thermophilus, at 3 Å resolution, solved from crystals grown at pH 7.8. In the NapA structure, the core and dimerization domains are in different positions to those seen in NhaA, and a negatively charged cavity has now opened to the outside. The extracellular cavity allows access to a strictly conserved aspartate residue thought to coordinate ion binding1, 8, 9 directly, a role supported here by molecular dynamics simulations. To alternate access to this ion-binding site, however, requires a surprisingly large rotation of the core domain, some 20° against the dimerization interface. We conclude that despite their fast transport rates of up to 1,500 ions per second3, Na+/H+ antiporters operate by a two-domain rocking bundle model, revealing themes relevant to secondary-active transporters in general

    The virtual haptic back: A simulation for training in palpatory diagnosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Models and simulations are finding increased roles in medical education. The Virtual Haptic Back (VHB) is a virtual reality simulation of the mechanical properties of the human back designed as an aid to teaching clinical palpatory diagnosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Eighty-nine first year medical students of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine carried out six, 15-minute practice sessions with the VHB, plus tests before and after the sessions in order to monitor progress in identifying regions of simulated abnormal tissue compliance. Students palpated with two digits, fingers or thumbs, by placing them in gimbaled thimbles at the ends of PHANToM 3.0<sup>Âź </sup>haptic interface arms. The interface simulated the contours and compliance of the back surface by the action of electric motors. The motors limited the compression of the virtual tissues induced by the palpating fingers, by generating counterforces. Users could see the position of their fingers with respect to the back on a video monitor just behind the plane of the haptic back. The abnormal region varied randomly among 12 locations between trials. During the practice sessions student users received immediate feedback following each trial, indicating either a correct choice or the actual location of the abnormality if an incorrect choice had been made. This allowed the user to feel the actual abnormality before going on to the next trial. Changes in accuracy, speed and Weber fraction across practice sessions were analyzed using a repeated measures analysis of variance.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Students improved in accuracy and speed of diagnosis with practice. The smallest difference in simulated tissue compliance users were able to detect improved from 28% (SD = 9.5%) to 14% (SD = 4.4%) during the practice sessions while average detection time decreased from 39 (SD = 19.8) to 17 (SD = 11.7) seconds. When asked in anonymous evaluation questionnaires if they judged the VHB practice to be helpful to them in the clinical palpation and manual medicine laboratory, 41% said yes, 51% said maybe, and 8% said no.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The VHB has potential value as a teaching aid for students in the initial phases of learning palpatory diagnosis.</p
