This is the peer reviewed version of the following article: Martínez Navarrete, Nuria, Camacho Vidal, Mª Mar, Agudelo-Sterling, Claudia, Salvador Alcaraz, Ana. (2018). Sensory characterization of juice obtained via rehydration of freeze-dried and spray-dried grapefruit.Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, 99, 1, 244-252. DOI: 10.1002/jsfa.9166, which has been published in final form at http://doi.org/10.1002/jsfa.9166. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-Archiving[EN] BACKGROUND The acceptability of grapefruit juice obtained from rehydrated freeze-dried and spray-dried fruit was studied and compared with that of natural freshly squeezed juice and that of a commercial juice. The rheological properties, colour and solute concentration were determined. A sensory evaluation was developed to evaluate juice acceptability. Furthermore, a penalty analysis was used to determine the attributes with improvement potential as well as some CATA (check all that apply) questions, where consumers marked the most characteristic attributes of each sample. RESULTS CONCLUSION The rehydrated samples were different from the commercial and natural juices. When grapefruit is freeze-dried or spray-dried, gum arabic and bamboo fibre are added and part of the fruit pulp is present; this is not so in the other juices under study. This supposes greater viscosity, luminosity and chroma together with a reddish tone of the rehydrated juices, especially the freeze-dried ones. It also affects their acidity, astringency and sweetness. Rehydrating the freeze-dried or spray-dried powder to the level of the natural juice, instead of that of the crushed or liquidized grapefruit, and incorporating sugar at this stage would probably improve the quality of the samples. Get PDF

Games for learning help students and professionals to incorporate new knowledge through a playful experience. With the popularization of virtual education (partially due to COVID-19), there is a need for new tools that complement virtual educational environments. To deal with this need, we present Scrum Game, a mobile application game that aims to support the Scrum software methodology teaching and training. Scrum Game offers 42 activities grouped in levels with specific learning goals. This paper reports on a controlled experiment that evaluates Scrum Game in a course with more than 160 students. We assessed Scrum Game's effectiveness in terms of (i) user performance (i.e., students' marks and number of levels/activities completed) and (ii) user experience (i.e., usability). We found that students who used Scrum Game outperformed those who did not use it. We also found that students think that Scrum Game exhibits an enjoyable user experience.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ

Methods: Mice subjected to transection of the medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments and meniscotomy (osteoarthritis model) or to a sham procedure, as well as non-operated (naive) mice and rats, had knee joints excised. Tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). CD68+ cells, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), interleukin (IL)-1β, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) expression were detected using immunohistochemistry. Results: Lamellar ossified areas, bone-entrapped osteocytes and bone marrow spaces were found inside menisci of one week up to 6 months-old naïve mice, regardless of gender. Menisci from naive rats also showed the same pattern with bone marrow areas. CD68+ cells were identified in bone marrow areas inside the meniscus of mice. TRAP+ osteoclasts, and hematogenous precursors expressing IL-1β, TNF, and iNOS were identified inside bone marrow areas in meniscal samples from both naïve and sham operated mice. Quantitative immunoexpression of IL-1 β, TNF and iNOS was more intense, P = 0.0194, 0.0293, 0.0124, respectively, in mouse knees from mice sacrificed 49 days after being subjected to an osteoarthritis (OA) model as compared to sham operated animals. Conclusion: We provide novel data showing that rodent menisci display bone marrow areas with cells able to produce inflammatory mediators. Immunoexpression of inflammatory mediators in those bone marrow areas is significantly more pronounced in mice subjected to experimental OA.The study was funded by: UID/BIM/50005/2019, project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)/ Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior (MCTES) through Fundos do Orçamento de Estado.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Submarine Navigation using Neutrinos

Neutrinos are among the most abundant particles in the universe, nearly massless, travel at speeds near the speed of light and are electrically neutral. Neutrinos can be generated through man-made sources like particle accelerators or by natural sources like the sun. Neutrinos only interact via the weak force and gravity. Since gravitational interaction is extremely weak and the weak force has a very short range, neutrinos can travel long distances unimpeded through matter, reaching places inaccessible to GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signals such as underwater locations. The main objective of this work is to sketch an early high-level design of a Neutrino PNT (Position, Navigation and Timing) mission and analyze its feasibility for submarine navigation since there is a need to improve current navigation technologies for submarines. The high-level preliminary concept proposes Cyclotrons or Linear Accelerators based on the physical process Pion Decay at Rest as neutrino sources. For detecting such isotropic neutrino fluxes user equipment must be composed of a high-performance clock synchronized with the system, a detector and possibly additional sensors such as IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). A feasibility analysis of the recommended system option is performed based on simulations for determining the neutrino detection rate and on a PNT tool to estimate the PNT performances. Although the submarine navigation application is in the limit of being feasible with current technology, it could be realized with some important but reasonable progress in source and neutrino detector technology.Comment: 10pages, 12 figure

The Rapid Antigen Detection Test for SARS-CoV-2 Underestimates the Identification of COVID-19 Positive Cases and Compromises the Diagnosis of the SARS-CoV-2 (K417N/T, E484K, and N501Y) Variants

Timely detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome due to coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) has been the gold- strategy for identifying positive cases during the current pandemic. However, faster and less expensive methodologies are also applied for the massive diagnosis of COVID-19. In this way, the rapid antigen test (RAT) is widely used. However, it is necessary to evaluate its detection efficiency considering the current pandemic context with the circulation of new viral variants. In this study, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of RAT (SD BIOSENSOR, South Korea), widely used for testing and SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis in Santiago of Chile. The RAT showed a 90% (amplification range of 20 ≤ Cq 30. In SARS-CoV-2 variant detection, RAT had a 42.8% detection sensitivity in samples with RT-qPCR amplification range 20 ≤ Cq <25 containing the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) K417N/T, N501Y and E484K, associated with beta or gamma SARS-CoV-2 variants. This study alerts for the special attention that must be paid for the use of RAT at a massive diagnosis level, especially in the current scenario of appearance of several new SARS-CoV-2 variants which could generate false negatives and the compromise of possible viral outbreaks

TRAF3 alterations are frequent in del-3′IGH chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients and define a specific subgroup with adverse clinical features

Interstitial 14q32 deletions involving IGH gene are infrequent events in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), affecting less than 5% of patients. To date, little is known about their clinical impact and molecular underpinnings, and its mutational landscape is currently unknown. In this work, a total of 871 CLLs were tested for the IGH break-apart probe, and 54 (6.2%) had a 300 kb deletion of 3′IGH (del-3′IGH CLLs), which contributed to a shorter time to first treatment (TFT). The mutational analysis by next-generation sequencing of 317 untreated CLLs (54 del-3′IGH and 263 as the control group) showed high mutational frequencies of NOTCH1 (30%), ATM (20%), genes involved in the RAS signaling pathway (BRAF, KRAS, NRAS, and MAP2K1) (15%), and TRAF3 (13%) within del-3′IGH CLLs. Notably, the incidence of TRAF3 mutations was significantly higher in del-3′IGH CLLs than in the control group (p < .001). Copy number analysis also revealed that TRAF3 loss was highly enriched in CLLs with 14q deletion (p < .001), indicating a complete biallelic inactivation of this gene through deletion and mutation. Interestingly, the presence of mutations in the aforementioned genes negatively refined the prognosis of del-3′IGH CLLs in terms of overall survival (NOTCH1, ATM, and RAS signaling pathway genes) and TFT (TRAF3). Furthermore, TRAF3 biallelic inactivation constituted an independent risk factor for TFT in the entire CLL cohort. Altogether, our work demonstrates the distinct genetic landscape of del-3′IGH CLL with multiple molecular pathways affected, characterized by a TRAF3 biallelic inactivation that contributes to a marked poor outcome in this subgroup of patients.Funding information: Universidad de Salamanca; Fundación Española de Hematología y Hemoterapia (FEHH); Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Cáncer (CIBERONC), Grant/Award Number: CB16/12/00233; Red Temática de Investigación Cooperativa en Cáncer (RTICC); “Fundación Memoria Don Samuel Solórzano Barruso”: FS/33–2020, Grant/Award Number: RD12/0036/0069; “Gerencia Regional de Salud, SACYL”:, Grant/Award Numbers: GRS2385/A/21, GRS2140/A/20; Consejería de Educación, Junta de Castilla y León, Grant/Award Number: SA118P20; European Regional Development Fund and Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Grant/Award Numbers: CD19/00222, FI19/00191; Spanish Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias, Grant/Award Numbers: PI21/00983, PI18/0150
