    Topological Fermi liquids from Coulomb interactions in the doped Honeycomb lattice

    We get an anomalous Hall metallic state in the Honeycomb lattice with nearest neighbors only arising as a spontaneously broken symmetry state from a local nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction V . The key ingredient is to enlarge the unit cell to host six atoms that permits Kekul\'e distortions and supports self-consistent currents creating non trivial magnetic configurations with total zero flux. We find within a variational mean field approach a metallic phase with broken time reversal symmetry (T) very close in parameter space to a Pomeranchuk instability. Within the T broken region the predominant configuration is an anomalous Hall phase with non zero Hall conductivity, a realization of a topological Fermi liquid. A T broken phase with zero Hall conductivity is stable in a small region of the parameter space for lower values of V

    Charge instabilities and topological phases in the extended Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with enlarged unit cell

    We study spontaneous symmetry breaking in a system of spinless fermions in the Honeycomb lattice paying special emphasis to the role of an enlarged unit cell on time reversal symmetry broken phases. We use a tight binding model with nearest neighbor hopping t and Hubbard interaction V1 and V2 and extract the phase diagram as a function of electron density and interaction within a mean field variational approach. The analysis completes the previous work done in Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 106402 (2011) where phases with non--trivial topological properties were found with only a nearest neighbor interaction V1 in the absence of charge decouplings. We see that the topological phases are suppressed by the presence of metallic charge density fluctuations. The addition of next to nearest neighbor interaction V2 restores the topological non-trivial phases

    Multi-Node Modeling of Cryogenic Tank Pressurization System using Generalized Fluid System Simulation Program

    This paper presents a multi-node model of autogenous pressurization of cryogenic propellant in a flight tank using the Generalized Fluid System Simulation Program (GFSSP), a general purpose flow network code developed at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center. Tests were conducted to measure the pressure and temperatures at the various axial locations of the stratified ullage at 75% and 45% fill level. Liquid nitrogen was pressurized by gaseous nitrogen from a supply tank while the drain valve from the tank remained closed during the pressurization process. The ullage was discretized into 25 uniformly distributed nodes: 5 in the radial direction and 5 in the axial direction assuming the flow to be axisymmetric. Heat and mass transfer between the liquid and vapor has been modeled at the liquid vapor interface. Heat transfer between wall and vapor at the ullage has been accounted for by assuming heat transfer occurs by natural convection. The model also accounts for heat leak to the tank through the insulation and metal wall by heat conduction. The predicted pressures and temperatures are compared with the measured data

    El método en dos investigaciones urbanas: Estación plaza de Bolívar e Imaginarios y representaciones en el transporte público de pasajeros

    Las primeras investigaciones urbanas se realizaron a partir de la semiótica de las formas y buscaban definir aquellos elementos o significantes que trasmiten el significado de ciudad. Luego, se incorporó la categoría deseo que permitió mirar el sentido de la ciudad más allá de su significado formal, esto es la práctica significante. Dentro de esta línea de investigación, la observación, que acá se presenta, pasó de una mirada estática en el trabajo “Estación Plaza de Bolívar”, a una ciudad en movimiento en el trabajo “Imaginarios y representaciones en el transporte público de pasajeros”. Entre estas dos investigaciones se produjo un cambio metodológico inducido por el movimiento y la necesidad de buscar escenas fragmentarias a lo largo de recorridos. El objetivo de este artículo es confrontar esas metodologías, las hipótesis y las referencias teóricas de ambas investigaciones.AbstractThe first urban investigations were carried out starting from the semiótica in the ways and they looked for to define those elements or significant that transmit the city meaning. Then, he/she incorporated the category desire that allowed to look at the sense of the city beyond their formal meaning, this is the significant practice. Inside this investigation line, the observation that here is presented, it passed of a static look in the work “Station Square of Bolívar”, to a city in movement in the work “Imaginary and representations in the public transportation of passengers.” Among these two investigations a methodological change induced by the movement and the necessity of looking for fragmentary scenes along journeys took place. The objective of this article is to confront those methodologies, the hypotheses and the theoretical references of both investigations.</p

    Multi-Node Modeling of Cryogenic Tank Pressurization System Using Generalized Fluid System Simulation Program

    Cryogenic Tanks are pressurized by inert gas such as Helium or Nitrogen to maintain the required pressure of the propellant delivered to the turbo-pump of a liquid rocket engine. Thermo-fluid system simulation tools are used to analyze the pressurization process of a cryogenic tank. Most system level codes (GFSSP and ROCETS) use single node1 to represent ullage which is the gaseous space in the tank. Ullage space in a cryogenic tank is highly stratified because the entering inert gas is at ambient temperature whereas the liquid propellant is at a cryogenic temperature. A single node model does not account for the effect of temperature gradient in the ullage. High fidelity Navier-Stokes based CFD model of Tank Pressurization is not practical for running a long duration transient model with thousands and millions of nodes. A possible recourse is to construct a multi-node model with system level code that can account for ullage stratification

    Improved prediction of the optical properties in pi-conjugated polymers: the case of benzochalcogenodiazole-based copolymers with different heteroatom substitution

    Donor−acceptor (D−A) approach to conjugated polymer design has become a widely used method for preparing conjugated polymers with narrow band gaps.1 One outstanding D−A polymer is poly(cyclopentadithiophene)benzothiadiazole, PCPDTBT (P1 in Figure 1), for which power conversion efficiencies in solar cells of 4.5-5.5% are reported.2 In this work, we use resonance Raman (RR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the tuning of the electronic and structural properties of cyclopentadithiophene-benzochalcogenodiazole D−A polymers, wherein a single atom in the benzochalcogenodiazole unit is varied from sulfur to selenium to tellurium (Fig. 1).3 Sophisticated DFT calculations have been carried out using long-range corrected functionals, considering both tuned and default range-separation parameters, aiming at predicting their optical and charge transport properties. In addition, the nature of the electronic excitation is described by analyzing the enhancement pattern in the RR spectra using Raman excitation wavelengths coincident with the various transitions in the copolymers.Universidad de Málaga.     Origin of morphological depressions on the Guadalquivir Bank uplifted area (Gulf of Cadiz middle slope)

    We have investigated the origin of morphological depressions (circular-elliptical depressions, amphitheatre-shaped escarpments and valleys) on the Guadalquivir Bank uplifted area (Gulf of Cadiz middle slope). This work is based on swath bathymetry and high- and mid-resolution reflection seismic datasets. Depressions occur on the distal (depositional) sector of the Gulf of Cadiz Contourite Depositional System, which has been developed under the influence of the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW). The Guadalquivir Bank is a NE-oriented relief that was uplifted along the Neogene and Quaternary. It forms the southern limit of the Bartolomeu Dias and Faro Sheeted Drift (SD) plateaus that are separated by the NW-trending Diego Cao Contourite Channel. Circular-elliptical depressions occur on the Bartolomeu Dias SD plateau, aligned parallel to the rim of the Diego Cao Channel. Irregular, crescent-shaped depressions occur to the SE of the study area and a valley surrounds the Guadalquivir Bank. The origin of these features is interpreted as the result of the interplay between oceanographic, mass-wasting, tectonic and fluid-escape processes. Four stages define the development of these features: 1) Onset of a contourite mounded drift associated with a proto-Diego Cao moat originated by a weak MOW circulation as it interacted with the structural features of the Guadalquivir Bank during the Lower Pliocene; 2) Evolution to a more complex multi-crest drift and moat system, probably as a result of an enhanced MOW and increased deformation of the underlying structures during the Upper Pliocene-Early Quaternary; 3) Event of enhanced tectonic activity that provoked widespread mass-wasting events along middle slope sheeted drift plateaus during the Mid Pleistocene. It was recorded in a prominent erosive surface under the present-day Diego Cao channel western rim and numerous slide scars displaying amphitheatre shapes on the limits of the plateaus; 4) Final stage (Late Quaternary) when the Mediterranean Intermediate Branch started flowing towards the N-NW along the deep gateway that was opened as a result of the mass-wasting event and/or structural adjustments. The contourite system evolved, due to tectonic events, to the present-day channel and a complex separated drift that includes circular depressions. They result from the interaction between the bottom current and the irregular basal surface created by the slide scars. During this phase, crescent-shaped depressions were created, probably by the interplay between bottom currents and fluid escape processes, and the marginal valley around the Guadalquivir Bank resulted from current reworking of the irregular topography of contouritic deposits affected by slide scars

    Glutathionylation of Pea Chloroplast 2-Cys Prx and Mitochondrial Prx IIF Affects Their Structure and Peroxidase Activity and Sulfiredoxin Deglutathionylates Only the 2-Cys Prx

    Together with thioredoxins (Trxs), plant peroxiredoxins (Prxs), and sulfiredoxins (Srxs) are involved in antioxidant defense and redox signaling, while their regulation by post-translational modifications (PTMs) is increasingly regarded as a key component for the transduction of the bioactivity of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Among these PTMs, S-glutathionylation is considered a protective mechanism against overoxidation, it also modulates protein activity and allows signaling. This study explores the glutathionylation of recombinant chloroplastic 2-Cys Prx and mitochondrial Prx IIF from Pisum sativum. Glutathionylation of the decameric form of 2-Cys Prx produced a change in the elution volume after FPLC chromatography and converted it to its dimeric glutathionylated form, while Prx IIF in its reduced dimeric form was glutathionylated without changing its oligomeric state. Mass spectrometry demonstrated that oxidized glutathione (GSSG) can glutathionylate resolving cysteine (Cys174), but not the peroxidatic equivalent (Cys52), in 2-Cys Prx. In contrast, GSSG was able to glutathionylate both peroxidatic (Cys59) and resolving (Cys84) cysteine in Prx IIF. Glutathionylation was seen to be dependent on the GSH/GSSG ratio, although the exact effect on the 2-Cys Prx and Prx IIF proteins differed. However, the glutathionylation provoked a similar decrease in the peroxidase activity of both peroxiredoxins. Despite growing evidence of the importance of post-translational modifications, little is known about the enzymatic systems that specifically regulate the reversal of this modification. In the present work, sulfiredoxin from P. sativum was seen to be able to deglutathionylate pea 2-Cys Prx but not pea Prx IIF.     ACTIVIDAD ANTIFUNGICA DE QUITOSANO CARBAMATO DE ETILO EN Candida albicans

    El incremento de las infecciones producidas en seres humanos y/o animales por hongos y el aumento de la resistencia de estos últimos a algunos fármacos, han conducido a la búsqueda de nuevos productos con actividad antifúngica.Producto de la síntesis química se ha obtenido la sustancia de origen natural, llamada Quitosano Carbamato de etilo (QCE) que ha demostrado acción antifúngica, particularmente a Candida albicans. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron determinar “in vitro” la Concentración MínimaInhibitoria (CIM), Concentración Letal Media (CLM) y Letal (CL) de QCE para cultivos de C. albicans en CM al 2%. Establecer para esta misma levadura su curva de crecimiento, el tiempo de inicio de acción del QCE y los cambios morfológicos de las células levaduriformes en CM al 2% con adición de QCE (0.89 mg/mL). Además, determinar la acción del QCE (0.89 mg/mL) para las levaduras Criptococcus albus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Sporobolomyces roseus y 5 cepas de C. albicans aisladasde casos clínicos en el Hospital Clínico Regional Valdivia (H.C.R.V.).La CIM fue 0.25 mg/mL, la CLM fue 0.45 mg/mL y la CL 0,89 mg/mL. La curva de crecimiento elaborada para los cultivos de C. albicans sin adición de QCE fue la típica de una levadura y, por el contrario, la elaborada para los cultivos adicionados con QCE sólo registró laetapa de latencia. El tiempo de inicio de la acción del QCE para la cepa control de C. albicans comienza a las 12 horas de incubación. Las células de C. albicans obtenidas de cultivos tratados con QCE se mostraron colapsadas, de menor tamaño, no forman tubo germinativo y tampocopseudomicelio. El QCE inhibió el desarrollo de cultivos de C. albus, S. cerevisiae, S. roseus y para tres de cinco cepas ensayadas de C. albicans obtenidas desde casos clínicos

    Modelización de los end-members para reconocer fuentes de aporte sedimentario en contornitas: un caso de estudio en el Mar de Alborán

    Contourite drifts are one the main morphosedimentary features in the Alboran Sea and their sediments are important archives of the past oceanographic conditions and sedimentary processes. The end-member modelling approach lets to decompose multimodal grain-size distribution into genetically meaningful subpopulation that may be related to different sediment transport mechanisms and source areas. Three end-members have been identified in the contourite drift and moat system located at the southern side of the Dijbouti Ville seamount that have been interpreted in terms of sediment sources. Two end-members point to an eolian source and comprise fine silt (EM1) and coarse silt (EM2) as modal grain-sizes, characterized by high and low contents, respectively, of terrigenous elements (Al, Si, Ti and K). The third end-member (EM3) indicates a fluvial origin and is mainly defined by a clay modal grain-size of intermediate and homogeneous content in terrigenous elements. Downcore variation of the relative proportion of these EMs can be used to decipher paleocenographic and paleoclimatic conditions in the Alboran Sea.Versión del edito
