Extracting Hα\alpha flux from photometric data in the J-PLUS survey

We present the main steps that will be taken to extract Hα\alpha emission flux from Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) photometric data. For galaxies with z≲0.015z\lesssim0.015, the Hα\alpha+[NII] emission is covered by the J-PLUS narrow-band filter F660F660. We explore three different methods to extract the Hα\alpha + [NII] flux from J-PLUS photometric data: a combination of a broad-band and a narrow-band filter (r′r' and F660F660), two broad-band and a narrow-band one (r′r', i′i' and F660F660), and a SED-fitting based method using 8 photometric points. To test these methodologies, we simulated J-PLUS data from a sample of 7511 SDSS spectra with measured Hα\alpha flux. Based on the same sample, we derive two empirical relations to correct the derived Hα\alpha+[NII] flux from dust extinction and [NII] contamination. We find that the only unbiased method is the SED fitting based one. The combination of two filters underestimates the measurements of the Hα\alpha + [NII] flux by a 28%, while the three filters method by a 9%. We study the error budget of the SED-fitting based method and find that, in addition to the photometric error, our measurements have a systematic uncertainty of a 4.3%. Several sources contribute to this uncertainty: differences between our measurement procedure and the one used to derive the spectroscopic values, the use of simple stellar populations as templates, and the intrinsic errors of the spectra, which were not taken into account. Apart from that, the empirical corrections for dust extinction and [NII] contamination add an extra uncertainty of 14%. Given the J-PLUS photometric system, the best methodology to extract Hα\alpha + [NII] flux is the SED-fitting based one. Using this method, we are able to recover reliable Hα\alpha fluxes for thousands of nearby galaxies in a robust and homogeneous way.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures. Abstract UKRI-MPW0 was developed to further improve the radiation tolerance of HV-CMOS pixel sensors. It implements a novel sensor cross-section that uses backside-only biasing to allow high substrate bias voltages > 600 V. In this contribution, the measured results of irradiated UKRI-MPW0 samples are presented, including their current-to-voltage (I-V) characteristics, depletion depth and pixel performance. The chip is proved to have survived high radiation fluence of 3 × 1015 neq/cm2.</jats:p

Design and preliminary results of a shunt voltage regulator for a HV-CMOS sensor in a 150 nm process

Abstract This paper presents the design and preliminary results of a shunt voltage regulator and two different bandgap reference designs for use with a monolithic High Voltage CMOS (HV-CMOS) sensor in a 150 nm technology node. One bandgap reference design is based on Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs) as the reference element of the circuit — the rest of the circuit is entirely designed with Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs). The second bandgap reference design makes use of MOSFETs exclusively.</jats:p

Background The recent development of highly effective treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS) and the potential risk of infectious complications require the development of prevention and risk minimisation strategies. Vaccination is an essential element of the management of these patients. This consensus statement includes a series of recommendations and practical scenarios for the vaccination of adult patients with MS who are eligible for highly effective immunosuppressive treatments. Methodology A formal consensus procedure was followed. Having defined the scope of the statement, we conducted a literature search on recommendations for the vaccination of patients with MS and specific vaccination guidelines for immunosuppressed patients receiving biological therapy for other conditions. The modified nominal group technique methodology was used to formulate the recommendations. Development Vaccination in patients who are candidates for immunosuppressive therapy should be considered before starting immunosuppressive treatment providing the patient's clinical situation allows. Vaccines included in the routine adult vaccination schedule, as well as some specific ones, are recommended depending on the pre-existing immunity status. If immunosuppressive treatment is already established, live attenuated vaccines are contraindicated. For vaccines with a correlate of protection, it is recommended to monitor the serological response in an optimal interval of 1-2 months from the last dose

Abstract This paper presents the edge Transient Current Technique (eTCT) measurements of passive test-structures on the UKRI-MPW0 pixel chip, a 280 µm thick proof-of-concept High Voltage-CMOS (HV-CMOS) device designed and fabricated in the LFoundry 150 nm technology node with a nominal substrate resistivity of 1.9 kΩ cm. Samples were irradiated up to 1 × 1016 1 MeV neq cm−2 with neutrons to observe the change in depletion depth and effective doping concentration with irradiation. A depletion depth of the sensor was found to be ≈50 µm at ≈−400 V at 1 × 1016 1 MeV neq cm−2. A stable damage introduction rate (g c ) was also calculated to be 0.011 ± 0.002 cm−1.</jats:p

Development of strategies for effective communication of food risks and benefits across Europe: Design and conceptual framework of the FoodRisC project

Get PDF
The FoodRisC project is funded under the Seventh Framework Programme (CORDIS FP7) of the European Commission; Grant agreement no.: 245124. Copyright @ 2011 Barnett et al.BACKGROUND: European consumers are faced with a myriad of food related risk and benefit information and it is regularly left up to the consumer to interpret these, often conflicting, pieces of information as a coherent message. This conflict is especially apparent in times of food crises and can have major public health implications. Scientific results and risk assessments cannot always be easily communicated into simple guidelines and advice that non-scientists like the public or the media can easily understand especially when there is conflicting, uncertain or complex information about a particular food or aspects thereof. The need for improved strategies and tools for communication about food risks and benefits is therefore paramount. The FoodRisC project ("Food Risk Communication - Perceptions and communication of food risks/benefits across Europe: development of effective communication strategies") aims to address this issue. The FoodRisC project will examine consumer perceptions and investigate how people acquire and use information in food domains in order to develop targeted strategies for food communication across Europe.METHODS/DESIGN: This project consists of 6 research work packages which, using qualitative and quantitative methodologies, are focused on development of a framework for investigating food risk/benefit issues across Europe, exploration of the role of new and traditional media in food communication and testing of the framework in order to develop evidence based communication strategies and tools. The main outcome of the FoodRisC project will be a toolkit to enable coherent communication of food risk/benefit messages in Europe. The toolkit will integrate theoretical models and new measurement paradigms as well as building on social marketing approaches around consumer segmentation. Use of the toolkit and guides will assist policy makers, food authorities and other end users in developing common approaches to communicating coherent messages to consumers in Europe.DISCUSSION: The FoodRisC project offers a unique approach to the investigation of food risk/benefit communication. The effective spread of food risk/benefit information will assist initiatives aimed at reducing the burden of food-related illness and disease, reducing the economic impact of food crises and ensuring that confidence in safe and nutritious food is fostered and maintained in Europe. This article is available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund
