    Investigating the Heart of a Community: Archaeological Excavations at the African Meeting House, Boston, Massachusetts

    In collaboration with the Museum of African American History, an archaeological research team from the University of Massachusetts Boston carried out a data recovery excavation at the African Meeting House on Beacon Hill. The African Meeting House was a powerful social institution for 19thcentury Boston’s free black community. The site played an important role in the abolition movement, the creation of educational opportunity, and other community action for social and political equality. The Meeting House was originally built in 1806, and renovations in preparation for the 2006 bi-centennial celebration prompted an investigation of areas of the property to be impacted by the proposed construction. Archaeological fieldwork, conducted under Massachusetts Historical Commission Permit Number 2750, was spread over seven weeks in May through July 2005. The field team opened and explored about 19 m2 of the site in the backlot south of the Meeting House and alley to the west. These excavations recorded information about a series of significant features and deposits, and collected over 38,000 artifacts and a series of soil samples for a detailed archaeobiological research program. These excavations met the requirements of the data recovery program as outlined in 950 CMR 70.00 and in the Memorandum of Agreement for the project, and the proposed renovation work proceeded with a finding of no adverse effect (36 CFR 800.5(b)). The depositional history and the nature of the archaeological record allow us to separate the overall excavation into three sub-areas: 1) the west alley between the AMH and 2 Smith Court; 2) the historic Meeting House backlot; and 3) the south yard, which originally belonged to the 44 Joy Street property. In terms of significant features and deposits, the west alley was almost entirely a series of builders’ trenches reflecting the historic sequence of construction and remodeling of the Meeting House and adjacent buildings to the west. In the backlot, the units against the south wall of the Meeting House contained similar builders’ trenches. The backlot also contained a series of stone and brick drains and a trash-rich midden layer. The vast majority of artifacts in the Meeting House backlot date from about 1806–1840. The ceramics assemblage is particularly large, and reflects both community meals at the Meeting House and business of Domingo Williams, a caterer who rented a basement apartment. Finally, only one feature was studied in the south yard, a privy (outhouse) that was for the 44 Joy Street property. The bottommost layer of the privy was an artifact rich nightsoil layer, dating to about 1811–1838, and containing the trash of African American tenants living at 44 Joy Street. Together, the archaeological deposits in the backlot provide a variety of insights into living conditions, economic opportunity, foodways, health, and daily life for 19th-century Boston’s free black community. These results thus provide information to help further the research, interpretation, and public education goals of the Museum of African American History

    Racehorse welfare across a training season

    Racehorse welfare is gaining increasing public attention, however scientific evidence in this area is lacking. In order to develop a better understanding of racehorse welfare, it must be measured and monitored. This is the first study to assess racehorse welfare using scientific objective methods across a training season. The aim of this study was threefold, firstly to investigate welfare measures which could be used in the first welfare assessment protocol for racehorses. Secondly, to understand the effect that a racing and training season had on individual racehorses and thirdly to identify risk factors for both good and poor welfare. Thirteen racehorse training yards were visited at the beginning and the peak of the racing season in England. Behavioral observations along with individual environmental and animal-based welfare measures were carried out on 353 horses in 13 training yards selected for variability. In our sample the horses were generally in good physical health: 94% of horses recorded as an ideal body condition score, no horses had signs of hoof neglect and 77.7% had no nasal discharge. The overall prevalence of external Mouth Corner Lesions was 12.9% and was significantly higher for Flat racing than Jump racing horses. The majority of horses (67.5%) showed positive horse human interactions. When stabled 54.1% horses had physical social contact and nasal discharge was not associated with increased physical contact. The training season significantly affected Human Reactivity Tests, Horse Grimace Scale scores and time spent resting and feeding. A total of 14.5% of horses displayed stereotypic behavior on at least two occasions. Horses with windows in their stables spent more time surveying their surroundings. Overall, in this population of racehorses, horses spent around a third of their daytime feeding (33.7%) followed by time spent standing resting (22.6%). The welfare assessment protocol used in this study is suitable for use in industry to collect welfare data on racehorses

    Undergraduate Physiotherapy Research Project Collaboration: The exploration of the Modified Total Body Rotation Test (MTBRT) for use with older people within the community

    Background – Undergraduate physiotherapy (UGP) research projects are a valuable means of exploring areas of interest. Collaborative studies can act as initial pilot studies prior to full investigation on targeted populations. Ten Cardiff University (CU) UGP students investigated various aspects of the MTBRT, an outcome measure used in the USA with Older Adults in the community. Aims/Objectives – To explore the Reliability and Validity of the MTBRT. Methods- 3 Correlation studies were undertaken over 3 years; 57 healthy CU staff and students aged between 20 – 59 years participated within the 3 reliability studies: intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the MTBRT, and intra-rater reliability of the seated MTBRT (sMTBRT); and 7 concurrent validity studies: MTBRT v Timed Up and Go; 4 Square Step; sMTBRT; 5x Sit to Stand; Step test; COP total excursion; and Functional reach tests. Results – Intra-rater reliability was high for both MTBRT (ICC 0.903, p= 0.00) and sMTBRT (ICC 0.951, p= 0.00). Inter-rater reliability was also high (ICC 1.00, p= 0.00) for the MTBRT. For concurrent validity, correlation was moderate with TUG (r= -.559, p= 0.01), 4SST (r= -0.692, p= 0.001) and sMTBRT (r= 0.578, p= 0.009); but low with 5xSTS (r= -0.418, p= 0.084), ST (r= 0,420, p= 0.082), COPtotex (r= - 0.408, p= 0.093) and FRT (r= 0.424, p=0.08). Conclusions – Ten UGP research studies have provided pilot data exploring the reliability and validity of the MTBRT on a healthy population aged 20-59 years old. Results indicate that the measure is reliable in it standing and sitting forms. They show a moderate correlation with TUG, 4SST and sMTBRT, presently used with the older adult population and containing similar physical challenges as the MTBRT. These could now be tested with an older age population to test the MTBRT’s validity with that population

    Validated shipping noise maps of the Northeast Atlantic

    Underwater noise pollution from shipping is globally pervasive and has a range of adverse impacts on species which depend on sound, including marine mammals, sea turtles, fish, and many invertebrates. International bodies including United Nations agencies, the Arctic Council, and the European Union are beginning to address the issue at the policy level, but better evidence is needed to map levels of underwater noise pollution and the potential benefits of management measures such as ship-quieting regulations. Crucially, corroboration of noise maps with field measurements is presently lacking, which undermines confidence in their application to policymaking. We construct a computational model of underwater noise levels in the Northeast Atlantic using Automatic Identification System (AIS) ship-tracking data, wind speed data, and other environmental parameters, and validate this model against field measurements at 4 sites in the North Sea. Overall, model predictions of the median sound level were within ±3 dB for 93% of the field measurements for one-third octave frequency bands in the range 125 Hz-5 kHz. Areas with median noise levels exceeding 120 dB re 1 ΌPa and 20 dB above modelled natural background sound were predicted to occur in the Dover Strait, the Norwegian trench, near to several major ports, and around offshore infrastructure sites in the North Sea. To our knowledge, this is the first study to quantitatively validate large-scale modelled noise maps with field measurements at multiple sites. Further validation will increase confidence in deeper waters and during winter months. Our results highlight areas where anthropogenic pressure from shipping noise is greatest and will inform the management of shipping noise in the Northeast Atlantic. The good agreement between measurements and model gives confidence that models of shipping noise can be used to inform future policy and management decisions to address shipping noise pollution

    Quantifying Urban Inequality: An Investigation of the Wicked Problems of Gentrification

    Gentrification, a process conceived to result in displacement of lower-income urban residents, is difficult to measure quantitatively due to its qualitative, social impacts. Additionally, the phenomenon is a wicked problem, with no decisive definition or a set list of causes. Whereas researchers have instigated attempts to numerically measure gentrification, there is a lack of a systematic and universal approach to evaluate the concept. To investigate this issue, an iterative process took place using gentrification theory and explorative work. A test index was created using the inner boroughs of the UK’s capital, London, aiming to use data which should be available within all cities. Indicators for the index based on the two main theories of gentrification were attained for three different time periods from governmental and census records, creating a longitudinal study to establish how an area has changed, and whether gentrification has occurred. The technique presents evidence of increasing socio-economic status within many of London’s inner  boroughs, with evidence of rising employment rates, house prices and managerial role residents. The highest scoring boroughs were areas considered to be undergoing super-gentrification. From the index, the next borough to super-gentrify will be Hammersmith & Fulham. For first time gentrifying boroughs, their index changes sit within the middle of the borough rankings. It is believed that further analysis and advancements are required on the index to ensure prevention of data misuse, conclusive results, and further consideration of cultural, political or social changes, however new contributions have been made within this topic from considering gentrification from a wicked problem viewpoint

    Estimation of minimally important differences and responder definitions for EORTC QLQ‐MY20 scores in multiple myeloma patients

    ObjectivesThresholds for the minimally important difference (MID) or responder definition (RD) in health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) scores are required to interpret the impact of an intervention or change in the trajectory of the condition which is meaningful to patients. This study aimed to establish MID and RD for the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Multiple Myeloma questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-MY20).MethodsA novel mixed-methods approach was applied by utilizing both existing clinical trial data and prospective patient interviews. Anchor-based, distribution-based, and qualitative-based estimates of meaningful change were triangulated to form recommended RDs for each scale of the EORTC QLQ-MY20. Anchor-based MIDs were summarized using weighted correlation.ResultsRecommended MIDs were as follows: Disease Symptoms (DS 10 points), Side Effects of Treatment (SE 10 points), Body Image (BI 13 points), and Future Perspective (FP 9 points). Recommended RDs were as follows: DS (16 improvement; 11 worsening), SE (6 improvement; 9 worsening), BI (33 improvement; 33 worsening), and FP (11 improvement; 11 worsening).ConclusionsThe study generated estimates of the MID and RD for each scale of the EORTC QLQ-MY20. Published estimates will enable investigators and clinicians to adopt these as standard for interpretation and for hypothesis testing. Consequently, analyses from trials of different interventions can be more comparable

    Characterizing opioid agonist therapy uptake and factors associated with treatment retention among people with HIV in British Columbia, Canada

    Accidental overdoses are now the leading cause of death among people with HIV (PWH) in British Columbia (BC). We examined the utilization and retention of opioid agonist therapy (OAT).Adult PWH (≄19 years) with ≄ 1 OAT dispensation in BC between 2008 and 2020 were included (n = 1,515). OAT treatment episodes were formed based on specific criteria for slow-release oral morphine (SROM), methadone, injectable OAT (iOAT), and buprenorphine/naloxone. Retention in treatment was defined as any episode lasting ≄ 12 months. Logistic regression with generalized estimating equations modeled retention-associated factors.There was a 56.6% decline in OAT retention over time. Buprenorphine treatment exhibited significantly lower odds of retention (OR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.36–0.92) compared to methadone. Conversely, no significant change in retention odds was observed for SROM (0.72; 0.33–1.54) and iOAT (0.81; 0.31–2.12). Factors associated with increased odds of retention included a 10-year increase in age (1.69; 1.46–1.95), previous retention history (1.96; 1.40–2.73), achieving OAT therapeutic dose (8.22; 6.67–10.14), and suppressed HIV viral load (1.35; 1.10–1.67). Individuals with a lifetime HCV diagnosis receiving iOAT were more likely to retain (3.61; 1.20–10.83). Each additional year on OAT during the study period was associated with a 4% increase in the odds of retention.A significant proportion of PWH had a history of OAT prescribing but experienced low retention rates. Retention outcomes were more positive for SROM and iOAT. The association between OAT medication type and retention odds may be particularly influenced by HCV diagnosis.
