First Attempt at Spectroscopic Detection of Gravity Modes in a Long-Period Pulsating Subdwarf B Star -- PG 1627+017
In the first spectroscopic campaign for a PG 1716 variable (or long-period
pulsating subdwarf B star), we succeeded in detecting velocity variations due
to g-mode pulsations at a level of 1.0-1.5 km/s.The observations were obtained
during 40 nights on 2-m class telescopes in Arizona, South Africa,and
Australia. The target,PG1627+017, is one of the brightest and largest amplitude
stars in its class.It is also the visible component of a post-common envelope
binary.Our final radial velocity data set includes 84 hours of time-series
spectroscopy over a time baseline of 53 days. Our derived radial velocity
amplitude spectrum, after subtracting the orbital motion, shows three potential
pulsational modes 3-4 sigma above the mean noise level, at 7201.0s,7014.6s and
7037.3s.Only one of the features is statistically likely to be real,but all
three are tantalizingly close to, or a one day alias of, the three strongest
periodicities found in the concurrent photometric campaign. We further
attempted to detect pulsational variations in the Balmer line amplitudes. The
single detected periodicity of 7209 s, although weak, is consistent with
theoretical expectations as a function of wavelength.Furthermore, it allows us
to rule out a degree index of l= 3 or l= 5 for that mode. Given the extreme
weakness of g-mode pulsations in these stars,we conclude that anything beyond
simply detecting their presence will require larger telescopes,higher
efficiency spectral monitoring over longer time baselines,improved longitude

Parenteral Nutrition in Advanced Cancer: The Healthcare Providers’ Perspective
Introduction:
The evidence base for parenteral nutrition (PN) in advanced cancer patients is limited. We studied healthcare providers’ (HCPs’) experiences with PN in cancer patients, focusing on perceived treatment benefits and challenges.
Methods:
An 18-item online survey was emailed to HCPs attending one of three regional palliative care seminars held within a 6-month period. The survey included single-response items, multiple-response items, and free text boxes concerning PN. Descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic content analysis were applied.
Results:
One hundred and two seminar participants completed the survey. Ninety-three percent were female, 86% were nurses/oncological nurses, and 80% worked in primary care. Respondents reported a well-functioning collaboration across levels of care. They perceived that PN may increase the patients’ level of energy, improve the general condition, and reduce eating-related distress. On the downside, HCPs observed burdensome side effects, that the treatment was resource-demanding, and that decisions on PN withdrawal were difficult.
Conclusion:
The study results are based on the perspectives of more than 100 HCPs with comprehensive clinical experience with PN. Their knowledge represents an important experience base for improvement of healthcare services and advanced care planning.publishedVersio
Ecosystem effects of thermal manipulation of a whole lake, Lake Breisjøen, southern Norway (THERMOS project)
International audienceWe conducted a 3-year artificial deepening of the thermocline in the dimictic Lake Breisjøen, southern Norway, by means of a large submerged propeller. An adjacent lake served as untreated reference. The manipulation increased thermocline depth from 6 to 20 m, caused a significant increase in the heat content, and delayed ice-on by about 20 days. There were only minor changes in water chemistry. Concentrations of sulphate declined, perhaps due to greater reduction of sulphate at the sediment-water interface. Concentrations of particulate carbon and nitrogen decreased, perhaps due to increased sedimentation velocity. Water transparency increased. There was no significant change in concentration of phosphorus, the growth-limiting nutrient. There were few significant changes in principal biological components. Phytoplankton biomass and productivity did not change, although the chlorophyll-a concentration showed a small decrease. Phytoplankton species richness increased, and the species composition shifted. Growth of periphyton increased. There was no change in the macrophyte community. The manipulation did not affect the zooplankton biodiversity, but caused a significant shift in the relative abundance (measured as biomass) in the two major copepod species. The manipulation did not affect the individual density, but appeared to have changed the vertical distribution of zoobenthos. Fish populations were not affected. The lake is oligotrophic and clearwater and the manipulation did not change the supply of phosphorus, and thus there were only minor changes in lake chemistry and biology. Effects might be larger in eutrophic and dystrophic lakes in which internal processes are stronger
Cancer and systemic inflammation: treat the tumour and treat the host
Determinants of cancer progression and survival are multifactorial and host responses are increasingly appreciated to have a major role. Indeed, the development and maintenance of a systemic inflammatory response has been consistently observed to confer poorer outcome, in both early and advanced stage disease. For patients, cancer-associated symptoms are of particular importance resulting in a marked impact on day-to-day quality of life and are also associated with poorer outcome. These symptoms are now recognised to cluster with one another with anorexia, weight loss and physical function forming a recognised cluster whereas fatigue, pain and depression forming another. Importantly, it has become apparent that these symptom clusters are associated with presence of a systemic inflammatory response in the patient with cancer. Given the understanding of the above, there is now a need to intervene to moderate systemic inflammatory responses, where present. In this context the rationale for therapeutic intervention using nonselective anti-inflammatory agents is clear and compelling and likely to become a part of routine clinical practice in the near future. The published literature on therapeutic intervention using anti-inflammatory agents for cancer-associated symptoms was reviewed. There are important parallels with the development of useful treatments for the systemic inflammatory response in patients with rheumatological disease and cardiovascular disease
Biological effects of rinsing morsellised bone grafts before and after impaction
Rinsing bone grafts before or both before and after impaction might have different effects on the incorporation of the graft. Rinsing again after impaction might negatively influence bone induction if growth factors released by impaction are washed away. We studied if transforming growth factor-βs (TGF-βs) and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are released from the mineralised matrix by impaction and if these released growth factors induce osteogenic differentiation in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Rinsed morsellised bone allografts were impacted in a cylinder and the escaping fluid was collected. The fluid was analysed for the presence of TGF-βs and BMPs, and the osteoinductive capacity was tested on hMSCs. Abundant TGF-β was present in the fluid. No BMPs could be detected. Osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs was inhibited by the fluid. Results from our study leave us only able to speculate whether rinsing grafts again after impaction has a beneficial effect on the incorporation process or not

A time varying speed of light as a solution to cosmological puzzles
We consider the cosmological implications of light travelling faster in the
early Universe. We propose a prescription for deriving corrections to the
cosmological evolution equations while the speed of light is changing. We
then show how the horizon, flatness, and cosmological constant problems may be
solved. We also study cosmological perturbations in this scenario and show how
one may solve the homogeneity and isotropy problems. As it stands, our scenario
appears to most easily produce extreme homogeneity, requiring structure to be
produced in the Standard Big Bang epoch. Producing significant perturbations
during the earlier epoch would require a rather careful design of the function
. The large entropy inside the horizon nowadays can also be accounted for

Multiwavelength observations revealing the outbursts of the two soft X-ray transients XTE J1859+226 and XTE J1118+480
We report here on multiwavelength observations of the two new soft X-ray
transients (SXTs) XTE J1859+226 and XTE J1118+480, which we observed with
HST/RXTE/UKIRT. For XTE J1118+480 we also used EUVE since it is located at a
very high galactic latitude and suffers from very low extinction. The two
sources exhibited very different behaviour. XTE J1859+226 seems quite normal
and therefore a good object for testing the accretion mechanisms in place
during the outbursts, XTE J1118+480 is much more unusual because it exhibits i)
a low X-ray to optical ratio and ii) a strong non-thermal contribution in the
radio to optical domain, which is likely to be due to synchrotron emission. We
concentrate here on the near-infrared (NIR) and optical observations of these

Observations of the pulsating subdwarf B star Feige 48: Constraints on evolution and companions
Since pulsating subdwarf B (sdBV or EC14026) stars were first discovered
(Kilkenny et al, 1997), observational efforts have tried to realize their
potential for constraining the interior physics of extreme horizontal branch
(EHB) stars. Difficulties encountered along the way include uncertain mode
identifications and a lack of stable pulsation mode properties. Here we report
on Feige 48, an sdBV star for which follow-up observations have been obtained
spanning more than four years, which shows some stable pulsation modes.
We resolve the temporal spectrum into five stable pulsation periods in the
range 340 to 380 seconds with amplitudes less than 1%, and two additional
periods that appear in one dataset each. The three largest amplitude
periodicities are nearly equally spaced, and we explore the consequences of
identifying them as a rotationally split l=1 triplet by consulting with a
representative stellar model.
The general stability of the pulsation amplitudes and phases allows us to use
the pulsation phases to constrain the timescale of evolution for this sdBV
star. Additionally, we are able to place interesting limits on any stellar or
planetary companion to Feige 48.Comment: accepted for publication in MNRA
Dimensionless cosmology
Although it is well known that any consideration of the variations of
fundamental constants should be restricted to their dimensionless combinations,
the literature on variations of the gravitational constant is entirely
dimensionful. To illustrate applications of this to cosmology, we explicitly
give a dimensionless version of the parameters of the standard cosmological
model, and describe the physics of Big Bang Neucleosynthesis and recombination
in a dimensionless manner. The issue that appears to have been missed in many
studies is that in cosmology the strength of gravity is bound up in the
cosmological equations, and the epoch at which we live is a crucial part of the
model. We argue that it is useful to consider the hypothetical situation of
communicating with another civilization (with entirely different units),
comparing only dimensionless constants, in order to decide if we live in a
Universe governed by precisely the same physical laws. In this thought
experiment, we would also have to compare epochs, which can be defined by
giving the value of any {\it one} of the evolving cosmological parameters. By
setting things up carefully in this way one can avoid inconsistent results when
considering variable constants, caused by effectively fixing more than one
parameter today. We show examples of this effect by considering microwave
background anisotropies, being careful to maintain dimensionlessness
throughout. We present Fisher matrix calculations to estimate how well the fine
structure constants for electromagnetism and gravity can be determined with
future microwave background experiments. We highlight how one can be misled by
