Review of the implementation of the IMO’s 2011 Biofouling Guidelines in the Netherlands

    Get PDF
Biofouling (or rather: biological fouling) on ships refers to the process where micro-organisms, plants, algae, or animals accumulate on outside areas of the ship that are (mostly) underwater. Biofouling on ships can result in the transfer of (non-native) invasive aquatic species. This risk has been addressed in the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2011 Guidelines for the control and management of ships’ biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species (MEPC.207(62)). In this report, the implementation of this guideline in the Netherlands will be reviewed, based on interviews and an online survey

Measures to reduce underwater noise and beach litter : an assessment of potential additional measures for the Netherlands

    Get PDF
This report provides insight whether technologies are available that could be applied in the Netherlands if stricter regulations would be implemented to reduce impulsive underwater noise caused by pile driving and continuous underwater noise caused by shipping. Costs, benefits and the applicability of such technologies in the Netherlands are examined. Furthermore, a similar analysis is carried out for an hypothetical expansion of the MyBeach concept along the entire Dutch coast

Literary cultures and public opinion in the Low Countries, 1450-1650

In the early modern Low Countries, literary culture functioned on several levels simultaneously: it provided learning, pleasure, and entertainment while also shaping public debate. From a ditty in Dutch sung in the streets to a funeral poem in Latin composed to be read for or by intimate friends, from a play performed for a prince to a comedy written for pupils – literary texts and performances often dealt with highly controversial topics of religion or politics, on a local or national, but also on a supranational scale. This volume sets out to analyse the role and function of literary culture in the formation of early modern public opinion, and proposes ways in which a modern scholar might approach early modern works of literature and other traces of literary culture to explore early modern public opinion making. The cases presented in this volume bring the Dutch and Latin literary cultures of the Low Countries in the focus of international debates on the history of public opinion

This report presents the results and findings of a detailed source analysis on beach litter that was collected from three locations in West Greenland in September and October 2019: Sisimiut, Qaqortoq and Maniitsoq. The results show that most of the litter is of local origin and can be traced back to outdoor activities such as commercial and recreational fishing and hunting and municipal waste from local communities and settlements. The analysis took place during an interactive Litter-ID session with local stakeholders and experts. Such sessions are intended to create a common understanding of the sources and pathways of beach litter as well as insights into the interaction of such litter with the local environment. This detailed knowledge can then be used as input for further action to prevent future marine littering
