The Coupled GCM ECHO-2. Part I: The Tropical Pacific
In this paper the performance of the global coupled general circulation model (CGCM) ECHO-2, which was integrated for 10 years without the application of flux correction, is described. Although the integration is rather short, strong and weak points of this CGCM can be clearly identified, especially in view of the model's performance of the annual cycle in the tropical Pacific. The latter is simulated with more success relative to the earlier version, ECHO-I. A better representation of the low-level stratus clouds in the atmosphere model associated with a reduction in the shortwave radiative flux at the air-sea interface improved the coupled model's performance in the southeastern tropical oceans, with a strongly reduced warm bias in these regions. Modifications in the atmospheric convection scheme also eliminated the AGCM's tendency to simulate a double ITCZ, and this behavior is maintained in the CGCM simulation. Finally, a new numerical scheme for active tracer advection in the ocean model strongly reduced the numerical mixing, which seems to enhance considerably the level of interannual variability in the equatorial Pacific. One weak point is an overall cold bias in the Tropics and midlatitudes, which typically amounts to 1°C in open ocean regions. Another weak point is the still too strong equatorial cold tongue, which penetrates too far into the western equatorial Pacific. Although this model deficiency is not as pronounced as in ECHO-1, the too strong cold tongue reduces the level of interannual rainfall variability in the western and central equatorial Pacific. Finally, the interannual fluctuations in equatorial Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are too equatorially trapped, a problem that is also found in ocean-only simulations. Photometric study of southern SU UMa-type dwarf novae and candidates -- III: NSV 10934, MM Sco, AB Nor, CAL 86
We photometrically observed four southern dwarf novae in outburst (NSV 10934,
MM Sco, AB Nor and CAL 86). NSV 10934 was confirmed to be an SU UMa-type dwarf
nova with a mean superhump period of 0.07478(1) d. This star also showed
transient appearance of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) during the final
growing stage of the superhumps. Combined with the recent theoretical
interpretation and with the rather unusual rapid terminal fading of normal
outbursts, NSV 10934 may be a candidate intermediate polar showing SU UMa-type
properties. The mean superhump periods of MM Sco and AB Nor were determined to
be 0.06136(4) d and 0.08438(2) d, respectively. We suggest that AB Nor belongs
to a rather rare class of long-period SU UMa-type dwarf novae with low
mass-transfer rates. We also observed an outburst of the suspected SU UMa-type
dwarf nova CAL 86. We identified this outburst as a normal outburst and

Neutrino Phenomenology in a 3+1+1 Framework
Evidence continues to grow in the MiniBooNE (MB) antineutrino mode supporting
a low-energy excess compatible with the MB neutrino mode and possibly also
confirming the results of the LSND experiment. At least one sterile neutrino is
required to explain the anomalies consistent with the observations of other
experiments. At the same time, there is a strong tension between the positive
signals of LSND and MB and the null results of nu_e and nu_mu disappearance
experiments. We explore a scenario, first proposed in \cite{Nelson:2010hz},
where the presence of an additional heavy sterile neutrino (with mass well
above an eV) can alleviate tension between LSND, MB and the null results of
disappearance experiments. We compare and contrast this 3+1+1 scenario with the
more standard 3+1 scenario and carry out global fits to all oscillation data
including new 2011 MB anti-nu data. We find that the tension can be somewhat
alleviated and that a phenomenologically viable window for the heavy neutrino,
consistent with rare decays and BBN constraints, can be found if the fifth
neutrino has a mass of order 0.3 - 10 GeV. We also find, however, that the 2011
MB anti-nu data exacerbates the tension with null experiments in both the 3+1
and 3+1+1 models when the lowest energy bins are included, resulting in little
improvement in the global fit. We also discuss the implications of an
additional neutrino for the reactor and gallium anomalies, and show that an
oscillation explanation of the anomalies is disfavored by cosmological

Relationships Between the Nutrient Content of Irrigated Pasture on Offer and that Selected by Grazing Dairy Cows
An experiment was conducted to determine the dry matter, energy, crude protein and fibre intake by dairy cows in late lactation when grazing perennial pasture offered at allocations of 15, 20, 30 and 40 kg DM/cow.day. The cows consistently selected a diet 10% higher in digestibility than that on offer. In contrast, cows selected diets with crude protein levels increasing from 22% to 40%, above that in pasture on offer, as pasture allocation increased. A similar pattern was observed for the intake of white clover (Trifolium repens L). The increase in the concentration of crude protein in the diet (as allocation increased) was due to the consumption of white clover and a decrease in the consumption of the dead components of the sward. On the other hand, the neutral detergent fibre content of the diet selected was lower than that on offer, and declined as pasture allocation increased
23 GHz VLBI Observations of SN 2008ax
We report on phase-referenced 23 GHz Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry (VLBI)
observations of the type IIb supernova SN 2008ax, made with the Very Long
Baseline Array (VLBA) on 2 April 2008 (33 days after explosion). These
observations resulted in a marginal detection of the supernova. The total flux
density recovered from our VLBI image is 0.80.3 mJy (one standard
deviation). As it appears, the structure may be interpreted as either a
core-jet or a double source. However, the supernova structure could be somewhat
confused with a possible close by noise peak. In such a case, the recovered
flux density would decrease to 0.480.12 mJy, compatible with the flux
densities measured with the VLA at epochs close in time to our VLBI
observations. The lowest average expansion velocities derived from our
observations are km s (case of a double
source) and km s (taking the weaker source
component as a spurious, close by, noise peak, which is the more likely
interpretation). These velocities are 7.3 and 2 times higher, respectively,

Plant and Sward Characteristics to Achieve High Intake in Ruminants

The Radio Evolution of SN 2001gd
We present the results of observations of the radio emission from Supernova
2001gd in NGC 5033 from 2002 February 8 through 2006 September 25. The data
were obtained using the Very Large Array at wavelengths of 1.3 cm (22.4 GHz), 2
cm (14.9 GHz), 3.6 cm (8.4 GHz), 6 cm (4.9 GHz), and 20 cm (1.5 GHz), with one
upper limit at 90 cm (0.3 GHz). In addition, one detection has been provided by
the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 21 cm (1.4 GHz). SN 2001gd was
discovered in the optical well past maximum light, so that it was not possible
to obtain many of the early radio "turn-on" measurements which are important
for estimating the local circumstellar medium (CSM) properties. Only at 20 cm
were turn-on data available. However, our analysis and fitting of the radio
light curves, and the assumption that the Type IIb SN 2001gd resembles the much
better studied Type IIb SN 1993J, enables us to describe the radio evolution as
being very regular through day ~550 and consistent with a nonthermal-emitting
model with a thermal absorbing CSM. The presence of synchrotron-self absorption
(SSA) at early times is implied by the data, but determination of the exact
relationship between the SSA component from the emitting region and the
free-free absorption component from the CSM is not possible as there are
insufficient early measurements to distinguish between models. After day ~550,
the radio emission exhibits a dramatically steeper decline rate which, assuming
similarity to SN 1993J, can be described as an exponential decrease with an
e-folding time of 500 days. We interpret this abrupt change in the radio flux
density decline rate as implying a transition of the shock front into a more
tenuous region of circumstellar material. A similar change in radio evolution

Drug resistance outcomes of long-term ART with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in the absence of virological monitoring
Objectives: The resistance profiles of patients receiving long-term ART in sub-Saharan Africa have been poorly described. This study obtained a sensitive assessment of the resistance patterns associated with long-term tenofovir-based ART in a programmatic setting where virological monitoring is yet to become part of routine care.
Methods: We studied subjects who, after a median of 4.2 years of ART, replaced zidovudine or stavudine with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate while continuing lamivudine and an NNRTI. Using deep sequencing, resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) were detected in stored samples collected at tenofovir introduction (T0) and after a median of 4.0 years (T1).
Results: At T0, 19/87 (21.8%) subjects showed a detectable viral load and 8/87 (9.2%) had one or more major NNRTI RAMs, whereas 82/87 (94.3%) retained full tenofovir susceptibility. At T1, 79/87 (90.8%) subjects remained on NNRTI-based ART, 5/87 (5.7%) had introduced lopinavir/ritonavir due to immunological failure, and 3/87 (3.4%) had interrupted ART. Whilst 68/87 (78.2%) subjects maintained or achieved virological suppression between T0 and T1, a detectable viral load with NNRTI RAMs at T0 predicted lack of virological suppression at T1. Each treatment interruption, usually reflecting unavailability of the dispensary, doubled the risk of T1 viraemia. Tenofovir, lamivudine and efavirenz selected for K65R, K70E/T, L74I/V and Y115F, alongside M184V and multiple NNRTI RAMs; this resistance profile was accompanied by high viral loads and low CD4 cell counts.
Conclusions: Viraemia on tenofovir, lamivudine and efavirenz led to complex resistance patterns with implications for continued drug activity and risk of onward transmission
