    Electoral Competitiveness and Turnout in British Elections, 1964-2010

The final version is forthcoming and will be available on the Publisher's website via http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayJournal?jid=RAMAnalyzing the British Election Study from 1964 to 2010, we examine the influence of electoral context on turnout, focusing on the closeness of elections in terms of lagged seat and constituency-level winning margins. Using cross-classified multilevel models to account for individual and contextual factors and disentangle life-cycle, cohort- and election-specific effects, we find that closeness strongly affects voting behavior, particularly among new electors. Widening seat margins in British elections over the last decades have had a persistent impact on turnout. Respondents who faced less competitive environments when young are more likely to abstain in subsequent elections than those reaching voting age after close-fought races. We conclude that variations in competitiveness have had both short- and long-term effects on turnout

    Mutagenesis of a cAMP Response Element within the Latency-Associated Transcript Promoter of HSV-1 Reduces Adrenergic Reactivation

    AbstractMutagenesis of a cyclic AMP response element (CRE) within the LAT promoter of HSV-1 reduces the ability of LAT expression to be induced in transient assays, but has only a minimal impact on reactivation of the virus inin vitrosystems. Here we show that a CRE mutation results in a significant reduction of adrenergically induced reactivationin vivoin the rabbit eye model. Spontaneous reactivation frequencies were also reduced. In addition, we demonstrate that this mutation has no effect on the amount of LAT expressed during latency when compared with the parent, 17syn+, and the rescuant. These results indicate a greater effect of CRE on induced reactivationin vivothan inin vitrosystems, but also suggest that the CRE in the LAT promoter is not autonomous in conducting the reactivation signal

    Cratonic Basins as Effective Sediment Barriers in Continent‑Scale Sediment Routing Systems of Paleozoic North America

    Provenance studies demonstrate the important control of plate boundary mountain building on continental sediment routing systems. Less well understood is if subsidence and uplift in cratons also has the potential to affect the organization of sediment routing systems on continental scales. New detrital zircon provenance data from the Michigan Basin in the Midcontinent of North America preserve evidence of intrabasin provenance heterogeneity in Cambrian, Ordovician, and middle Devonian strata. These results suggest that cratonic basins serve as effective sediment barriers that prevent mixing within and across basins from 10 to 100 s of millions of years. Internal sediment mixing, sorting, and dispersal may be achieved by a combination of sedimentary processes and inherited low relief topography. These observations are consistent with provenance data sets from eastern Laurentian Midcontinent basins that show locally and regionally variable provenance signatures during the early Paleozoic. By the late Devonian, provenance signatures throughout the basins homogenized, consistent with the emergence of transcontinental sediment transport systems associated with Appalachian orogenesis at the plate margin. These results demonstrate the importance of cratonic basins on local and regional sediment routing systems suggesting that these features may impede the integration of continental-scale sediment routings systems, particularly during periods of plate margin quiescence
