CP-Violation in the Production of Tau-Leptons at TESLA with Beam Polarization
We study the prospects of discovering CP-violation in the production of
tau-leptons in the reaction {e+e- --> tau+tau- at TESLA, an e+e- linear
collider with center-of-mass energies of 500 or even 800 GeV. Non-vanishing
expectation values of certain correlations between the momenta of the decay
products of the two tau leptons would signalthe presence of CP-violation beyond
the standard model. We study how longitudinal beam polarization of the electron
and positron beams will enhance these correlations. We find that T-odd and
T-even vector correlations are well suited for the measurements of the real and
imaginary parts of the electric dipole form factors. We expect measurements of
the real part with a precision of roughly 10^-20 ecm and of the imaginary part
of 10^-17 ecm. This compares well with the size of the expected effects in many
extensions of the standard model
Afterpulse Measurements of R7081 Photomultipliers for the Double Chooz Experiment
We present the results of afterpulse measurements performed as qualification
test for 473 inner detector photomultipliers of the Double Chooz experiment.
The measurements include the determination of a total afterpulse occurrence
probability as well as an average time distribution of these pulses.
Additionally, more detailed measurements with different light sources and
simultaneous charge and timing measurements were performed with a few
photomultipliers to allow a more detailed understanding of the effect. The
results of all measurements are presented and discussed

Long-Term Stability of Polymer-Coated Surface Transverse Wave Sensors for the Detection of Organic Solvent Vapors
Arrays with polymer-coated acoustic sensors, such as surface acoustic wave (SAW) and surface transverse wave (STW) sensors, have successfully been applied for a variety of gas sensing applications. However, the stability of the sensors’ polymer coatings over a longer period of use has hardly been investigated. We used an array of eight STW resonator sensors coated with different polymers. This sensor array was used at semi-annual intervals for a three-year period to detect organic solvent vapors of three different chemical classes: a halogenated hydrocarbon (chloroform), an aliphatic hydrocarbon (octane), and an aromatic hydrocarbon (xylene). The sensor signals were evaluated with regard to absolute signal shifts and normalized signal shifts leading to signal patterns characteristic of the respective solvent vapors. No significant time-related changes of sensor signals or signal patterns were observed, i.e., the polymer coatings kept their performance during the course of the study. Therefore, the polymer-coated STW sensors proved to be robust devices which can be used for detecting organic solvent vapors both qualitatively and quantitatively for several years
Routine implementation costs of larviciding with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis against malaria vectors in a district in rural Burkina Faso
Background: The key tools in malaria control are early diagnosis and treatment of cases as well as vector control. Current strategies for malaria vector control in sub-Saharan Africa are largely based on long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and to a much smaller extent on indoor residual spraying (IRS). An additional tool in the fight against malaria vectors, larval source management (LSM), has not been used in sub-Saharan Africa on a wider scale since the abandonment of environmental spraying of DDT. Increasing concerns about limitations of LLINs and IRS and encouraging results from large larvicide-based LSM trials make a strong case for using biological larviciding as a complementary tool to existing control measures. Arguments that are often quoted against such a combined approach are the alleged high implementation costs of LSM. This study makes the first step to test this argument. The implementation costs of larval source management based on Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) (strain AM65-52) spraying under different implementation scenarios were analysed in a rural health district in Burkina Faso. Methods: The analysis draws on detailed cost data gathered during a large-scale LSM intervention between 2013 and 2015. All 127 villages in the study setup were assigned to two treatment arms and one control group. Treatment either implied exhaustive spraying of all available water collections or targeted spraying of the 50 % most productive larval sources via remote-sensing derived and entomologically validated risk maps. Based on the cost reports from both intervention arms, the per capita programme costs were calculated under the assumption of covering the whole district with either intervention scenario. Cost calculations have been generalized by providing an adaptable cost formula. In addition, this study assesses the sensitivity of per capita programme costs with respect to changes in the underlying cost components. Results: The average annual per capita costs of exhaustive larviciding with Bti during the main malaria transmission period (June–October) in the Nouna health district were calculated to be US 0.77. Additionally, a high sensitivity of per capita programme costs against changes in total surface of potential larval sources and the number of spraying repetitions was found. Discussion: The per capita costs for larval source management interventions with Bti are roughly a third of the annual per capita expenditures for anti-malarial drugs and those for LLINs in Burkina Faso which are US$ 3.80 and 3.00, respectively. The average LSM costs compare to those of IRS and LLINs for sub-Saharan Africa. The authors argue that in such a setting LSM based on Bti spraying is within the range of affordable anti-malarial strategies and, consequently, should deserve more attention in practice. Future research includes a cost-benefit calculation, based on entomological and epidemiological data collected during the research project
Near-field coded-mask technique and its potential for proton therapy monitoring
Objective. Prompt-gamma imaging encompasses several approaches to the online monitoring of the beam range or deposited dose distribution in proton therapy. We test one of the imaging techniques - a coded mask approach - both experimentally and via simulations. Approach. Two imaging setups have been investigated experimentally. Each of them comprised a structured tungsten collimator in the form of a modified uniformly redundant array mask and a LYSO:Ce scintillation detector of fine granularity. The setups differed in detector dimensions and operation mode (1D or 2D imaging). A series of measurements with radioactive sources have been conducted, testing the performance of the setups for near-field gamma imaging. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations of a larger setup of the same type were conducted, investigating its performance with a realistic gamma source distribution occurring during proton therapy. Main results. The images of point-like sources reconstructed from two small-scale prototypes' data using the maximum-likelihood expectation maximisation algorithm constitute the experimental proof of principle for the near-field coded-mask imaging modality, both in the 1D and the 2D mode. Their precision allowed us to calibrate out certain systematic offsets appearing due to the limited alignment accuracy of setup elements. The simulation of the full-scale setup yielded a mean distal falloff retrieval precision of 0.72 mm in the studies for beam energy range 89.5–107.9 MeV and with 1 × 10 protons (a typical number for distal spots). The implemented algorithm of image reconstruction is relatively fast—a typical procedure needs several seconds. Significance. Coded-mask imaging appears a valid option for proton therapy monitoring. The results of simulations let us conclude that the proposed full-scale setup is competitive with the knife-edge-shaped and the multi-parallel slit cameras investigated by other groups
Phase locking the spin precession in a storage ring
This letter reports the successful use of feedback from a spin polarization
measurement to the revolution frequency of a 0.97 GeV/ bunched and polarized
deuteron beam in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) storage ring in order to control
both the precession rate ( kHz) and the phase of the horizontal
polarization component. Real time synchronization with a radio frequency (rf)
solenoid made possible the rotation of the polarization out of the horizontal
plane, yielding a demonstration of the feedback method to manipulate the
polarization. In particular, the rotation rate shows a sinusoidal function of
the horizontal polarization phase (relative to the rf solenoid), which was
controlled to within a one standard deviation range of rad. The
minimum possible adjustment was 3.7 mHz out of a revolution frequency of 753
kHz, which changes the precession rate by 26 mrad/s. Such a capability meets a
requirement for the use of storage rings to look for an intrinsic electric
dipole moment of charged particles
European Strategy for Accelerator-Based Neutrino Physics
Massive neutrinos reveal physics beyond the Standard Model, which could have
deep consequences for our understanding of the Universe. Their study should
therefore receive the highest level of priority in the European Strategy. The
discovery and study of leptonic CP violation and precision studies of the
transitions between neutrino flavours require high intensity, high precision,
long baseline accelerator neutrino experiments. The community of European
neutrino physicists involved in oscillation experiments is strong enough to
support a major neutrino long baseline project in Europe, and has an ambitious,
competitive and coherent vision to propose. Following the 2006 European
Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) recommendations, two complementary design
studies have been carried out: LAGUNA/LBNO, focused on deep underground
detector sites, and EUROnu, focused on high intensity neutrino facilities.
LAGUNA LBNO recommends, as first step, a conventional neutrino beam CN2PY from
a CERN SPS North Area Neutrino Facility (NANF) aimed at the Pyhasalmi mine in
Finland. A sterile neutrino search experiment which could also be situated in
the CERN north area has been proposed (ICARUS-NESSIE) using a two detector
set-up, allowing a definitive answer to the 20 year old question open by the
LSND experiment. EUROnu concluded that a 10 GeV Neutrino Factory, aimed at a
magnetized neutrino detector situated, also, at a baseline of around 2200 km
(+-30%), would constitute the ultimate neutrino facility; it recommends that
the next 5 years be devoted to the R&D, preparatory experiments and
implementation study, in view of a proposal before the next ESPP update. The
coherence and quality of this program calls for the continuation of neutrino
beams at CERN after the CNGS, and for a high priority support from CERN and the
member states to the experiments and R&D program.Comment: Prepared by the program committee of the Neutrino `town meeting',
