    Get PDF

    Get PDF
Publications on executive functions have increased in the last few years, reflecting the importance of this area of study. The scientific output on executive functions is now extremely diverse, comprising variations around terminology, assessment, and rehabilitation practices, and ranging in topics from neuroanatomical correlates of executive functions to effects of executive dysfunction. This review seeks to explore this diversity around executive functions in order to provide an integrative overview of the topic that systematizes the current knowledge in this area, and to point to trends and future directions for research and practice. The literature review was conducted in the ISI Web of Knowledge databases. The analysis was conducted in NVivo9. Two independent coders applied an inductive analysis to all relevant papers, building a hierarchical model with categories and subcategories of themes emerging from the literature. A confirmatory analysis followed, with the same independent coders applying the model to the papers. The process was validated by a third expert researcher. Out of 187 titles and abstracts, 91 were analyzed. The outcomes were structured in six main categories: central nervous system, diagnosis, population, assessment, intervention, and theoretical models. Key findings included promising trends in executive function assessment and rehabilitation as well as potential implications for current health approaches and future research.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

[Abstract] The new website of the city of Porto (www.visitporto.travel), that started development in early 2010 and was activated in May 2011, functions as a tourism marketplace combined with an integrated information system for tourism. This is achieved by combining a series of tools and technologies that provide information and advice and support the acquisition of goods and services. Starting from the early stage of trip planning and remote access (telephone, SMS, email and web), proceeding to the arrival into the city and face to face interactions in e.g. tourist shops, combined with other means of self-information and acquisition of goods and services (e.g. PortoCard), supporting the visit all the way up to eventually leaving the city to visit other destinations, such as the vineyards of the Douro Valley, and coming back to Porto for the return journey, and finishing with the process of feedback and follow-up. This paper describes the rationale behind the creation of this website that intends to be a tourism gateway to the Metropolitan Area of Porto and Northern Portugal with special emphasis on the Douro Valley, and the experience behind the process of designing, implementing and rolling out the new portal, and adapting it to user feedback. Although the website is still under active development some parts of it are already considered to be a success. The most important result seems to be that the website is working as a rally point for the tourism ecosystem, fostering the development of synergies between the different players.[Resumo] O novo portal de turismo da cidade do Porto (www.visitporto.travel), cujo desenvolvimento arrancou no início de 2010 sendo disponibilizado ao público em maio 2011, funciona como um mercado de turismo combinado com um sistema de informação integrado.

Acute and Chronic Effects of Endurance Running on Inflammatory Markers: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
[EN] In order to understand the effect of endurance running on inflammation, it is necessary to quantify the extent to which acute and chronic running affects inflammatory mediators. The aim of this study was to summarize the literature on the effects of endurance running on inflammation mediators. Electronic searches were conducted on PubMED and Science Direct with no limits of date and language of publication. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized controlled trials (NRCTs) investigating the acute and chronic effects of running on inflammation markers in runners were reviewed by two researchers for eligibility. The modified Downs and Black checklist for the assesssments of the methodological quality of studies was subsequently used. Fifty-one studies were finally included. There were no studies with elite athletes. Only two studies were chronic interventions. Results revealed that acute and chronic endurance running may affect anti- and pro-inflammatory markers but methodological differences between studies do not allow comparisons or generalization of the results. The information provided in this systematic review would help practitioners for better designing further studies while providing reference values for a better understanding of inflammatory responses after different running events. Further longitudinal studies are needed to identify the influence of training load parameters on inflammatory markers in runners of different levels and training background.DN enjoys a PROSUP grant from CAPES. Managing patients with dengue fever during an epidemic: the importance of a hydration tent and of a multidisciplinary approach

    Get PDF

Abstract

Background

Dengue fever is one of the most common tropical diseases worldwide. Early detection of the disease, followed by intravenous fluid therapy in patients with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or with warning signs of dengue has a major impact on the prognosis. The purpose of this study is to describe the care provided in a hydration tent, including early detection, treatment, and serial follow-up of patients with dengue fever.

Findings

The analysis included all patients treated in the hydration tent from April 8 to May 9, 2008. The tent was set up inside the premises of the 2nd Military Firemen Group, located in Meier, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The case form data were stored in a computerized database for subsequent assessment. Patients were referred to the tent from primary care units and from secondary city and state hospitals. The routine procedure consisted of an initial screening including vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate), tourniquet test and blood sampling for complete blood count. Over a 31-day period, 3,393 case recordings were seen at the hydration tent. The mean was 109 patients per day. A total of 2,102 initial visits and 1,291 return visits were conducted. Of the patients who returned to the hydration tent for reevaluation, 850 returned once, 230 returned twice, 114 returned three times, and 97 returned four times or more. Overall, 93 (5.3%) patients with DHF seen at the tent were transferred to a tertiary hospital. There were no deaths among these patients.

Discussion

As the epidemics were already widespread and there were no technical conditions for routine serology, all cases of suspected dengue fever were treated as such. Implementing hydration tents decrease the number of dengue fever hospitalizations.</p

OBJECTIVE: The Assessments of SpondyloArthritis international Society Health Index (ASAS HI), estimates the impact of Spondyloarthritis (SpA) on global functioning and health. This article assesses the construct validity, reliability and responsiveness of the Portuguese version of the ASAS HI. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients fulfilling ASAS classification criteria for axial (axSpA) or peripheral SpA (pSpA) were included. Construct validity was assessed through Spearman's correlation analysis with other health outcomes. Discriminant validity was tested comparing the ASAS HI across disease activity and functional states using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's α, and test-retest reliability by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Responsiveness was evaluated by the standardized response mean (SRM) in patients with active disease who required therapy escalation. RESULTS: Among the 91 patients included, 67% were male, mean (SD) age 47.2 (12.9) years, 63 patients with axSpA and 28 patients with pSpA. The hypothesis defined a priori to test construct validity were confirmed. The ASAS HI showed ability to discriminate between patients with different disease activity and functional states (p<0.001). Internal consistency (Cronbach's α: 0.88) and test-retest reliability [ICC=0.76 (95%CI 0.09-0.91)] were good. Responsiveness was moderate (SRM=-0.53). The smallest detectable change was 3.0. CONCLUSIONS: The Portuguese version of the ASAS HI is a comprehensible questionnaire that is valid, reliable and responsive. It can be used to assess the impact of SpA and its treatment on functioning and health, in clinical practice and for research purposes.publishersversionpublishe
