Pipelined Two-Operand Modular Adders

Pipelined two-operand modular adder (TOMA) is one of basic components used in digital signal processing (DSP) systems that use the residue number system (RNS). Such modular adders are used in binary/residue and residue/binary converters, residue multipliers and scalers as well as within residue processing channels. The design of pipelined TOMAs is usually obtained by inserting an appriopriate number of latch layers inside a nonpipelined TOMA structure. Hence their area is also determined by the number of latches and the delay by the number of latch layers. In this paper we propose a new pipelined TOMA that is based on a new TOMA, that has the smaller area and smaller delay than other known structures. Comparisons are made using data from the very large scale of integration (VLSI) standard cell library

Torque-operated gradient-index axicon

We describe a gradient-index axicon based on twisting of crystals. We demonstrate that the focal length of the axicon can be efficiently operated by the torsion moment. The working analytical relations describing the focal length of the axicon and its dependence on different geometrical parameters as well as the torsion moment has been derived.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

Sądownictwo administracyjne w europejskiej doktrynie prawa administracyjnego na przełomie XIX i XX w.

One of the fundamental assumptions of a constitutional and lawful state was recognizing the existence of an inviolable sphere of rights and freedom of individuals that restricted the freedom of administrative action. The guarantee for the protection of the sphere was seen in the statutory defining of the boundaries of the workings of the state apparatus and in the possibility of the external audit of the legality of the public administration. The duty was supposed to be fulfilled mainly by administrative judiciary which was considered to be one of the most significant institutions of administrative law in the 19th-century theory and practice. The term “administrative judiciary” was understood as the settlement of complaints against unlawful administrative decisions implemented by way of contentious proceeding before the authorities of the Member State. Such understanding of administrative judiciary did not decide upon the necessity for separating individual authorities, independent of Common Courts, that were established for administrative disputes resolution. It also did not define the material scope of its characteristics. Those issues were of special interest to the European Administrative Sciences, especially in the second half of the 19th century.Jednym z podstawowych założeń konstytucyjnego państwa prawnego było uznanie istnienia nienaruszalnej sfery praw i wolności jednostki, ograniczającej swobodę działania administracji. Gwarancji ochrony tej sfery upatrywano w ustawowym określeniu granic funkcjonowania aparatu państwowego oraz w możliwości zewnętrznej kontroli legalizmu działania administracji publicznej. Zadania te miało spełniać przede wszystkim sądownictwo administracyjne, które w dziewiętnastowiecznej teorii i praktyce uznawano za jedną z najistotniejszych instytucji prawa administracyjnego. Pod pojęciem sądownictwa administracyjnego powszechnie rozumiano rozstrzyganie skarg na niezgodne z prawem decyzje administracyjne realizowane w drodze postępowania spornego przed organami państwa niezależnymi od administracji. Takie pojmowanie sądownictwa administracyjnego nie przesądzało jeszcze o konieczności wyodrębnienia szczególnych organów powołanych do rozstrzygania sporów administracyjnych, niezależnych od sądów powszechnych oraz nie określało zakresu przedmiotowego jego właściwości. Zagadnienia te stały się przedmiotem szczególnego zainteresowania europejskich nauk administracyjnych, zwłaszcza w drugiej połowie XIX w

Functions of a Fairy Tale in the Auschwitz Camp Memories of Zofia Posmysz

The article gives a multifaceted interpretation of the functions of a concentration camp fairy tale from the perspective of folklore studies (i.e. its socio-integrative, aesthetic, didactic/educational, compensatory/cathartic and trauma management functions) and literary studies (strategies of women’s writing about the Holocaust and the war, and the camp testimony). The author analyses the novel Wakacje nad Adriatykiem (1970) and an extended interview Królestwo za mgłą (2017) by Zofia Posmysz, an inmate of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Ravensbrück and Neustadt-Glewe, who stylised her camp memories as a traditional folk tale, thus commemorating the fairy tales told by her camp friend Zofia Jachimczak, who did not survive Auschwitz. The author comes to the conclusion that a concentration camp fairy tale seems to be a complete genre and a comprehensive structure of meaning that makes it possible to express the inexpressible.Artykuł zarysowuje wieloaspektową interpretację funkcji bajki obozowej z perspektywy folklorystyki (funkcje społeczno-integracyjne, estetyczne, dydaktyczno-wychowawcze, kompensacyjno-katartyczne i opanowanie traumy) oraz literaturoznawstwa (strategie kobiecego pisania o Zagładzie i wojnie oraz kategoria świadectwa). Podstawę analizy stanowi powieść Wakacje nad Adriatykiem (1970) i wywiad-rzeka Królestwo za mgłą (2017) Zofii Posmysz – więźniarki obozów koncentracyjnych Auschwitz, Ravensbrück i Neustadt-Glewe. Swoje wspomnienia obozowe wystylizowała na tradycyjną bajkę ludową, upamiętniając bajki opowiadane przez jej obozową przyjaciółkę Zofię Jachimczak, która nie przeżyła Auschwitz. Autorka dochodzi do wniosku, że bajka obozowa jawi się jako gatunek totalny i całościowa struktura sensu, pozwalająca wypowiedzieć niewypowiedziane

A rite in the light of the Actor-Network Theory – the research perspectives (as exemplified by the feast of Corpus Christi in Spycimierz)

The author begins with the research on annual rituals in the current of structural semiotics, on the basis of which it is possible to define a ritual as a text of culture. Then, the author proceeds to demonstrate that the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) can be a natural continuation of the structural-functional research on rituals, because these two approaches meet in four methodological areas: anthropology and ethnology, structuralism, semiotics (of a text) and ethnomethodology, and are inspired by them. In the second part, the authors outlines two basic “methodological benefits” which the research on rituals may derive from the application of ANT: a new look on elements of structure of a ritual culture text and the use of translation as an in spe tool of ritual semiotics. In the conclusions, the author opens new research perspectives, in particular by presenting ANT as a natural bridge between the structural-functional-semiotic description of a ritual and constructivism, and as a chance to interpret the way in which texts of post-traditional culture build a community.Autorka wychodzi od badań obrzędowości dorocznej w nurcie semiotyki strukturalnej, które pozwoliły określić obrzęd jako tekst kultury. Wykazuje następnie, że Teoria Aktora-Sieci (ANT) może być naturalną kontynuacją strukturalno-funkcjonalnych badań obrzędowości, gdyż te dwa podejścia spotykają się w czterech przestrzeniach metodologicznych, które je inspirują: antropologii i etnologii, strukturalizmu, semiotyki (tekstu) oraz etnometodologii W drugiej części autorka nakreśla dwa zasadnicze „zyski metodologiczne”, jakie może przynieść badaniom obrzędów zastosowanie ANT: nowe spojrzenie na elementy struktury obrzędowego tekstu kultury oraz wykorzystanie translacji jako in spe narzędzia semiotyki obrzędowej. W podsumowaniu otwiera nowe perspektywy badawcze, szczególnie pokazując ANT jako naturalny pomost między strukturalno-funkcjonalno-semiotycznym opisem obrzędu a konstruktywizmem i jako szansę na interpretację sposobu, w jaki teksty kultury posttradycyjnej budują wspólnotę
