Ground Improvement Methods Using Column-Type Techniques
Ground improvement methods using column-type techniques are employed on an increasing scale for the construction of road and railway embankments in Indiana. In this presentation the main emphasis will be on methods for the improvement of soft soils using column-type techniques: stone columns, aggregate columns, sand compaction piles, grout-injected stone columns with load transfer mats constructed with geosynthetic reinforcements, geotextile-encased sand columns, lime and lime cement columns, and friction piles in soft soils. The current state-of-the-art for these techniques, some research results, and the experiences gained from two important projects will be presented
Design and Construction of Auger Cast Piles
New technologies have been developed recently that add to the QC option available for auger cast piles. Four transportation applications will be discussed: bridge foundation including abutments, retaining structures (secant or tangent pile walls), column-supported embankments over soft ground, and sound walls. Emphasis will be placed on the installation process, QC during installation, quality assurance after installation, and the common misperceptions. The presentation will include one case history for a 12-floor building in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana, showing the design for 47 auger cast piles as one group
Design and Construction of Drilled Shafts for Landslides
In general, weathered shale underlain by shale interbedded with limestone is the main forma-tion that underlies many of the slopes adjacent to the Ohio River in southern Indiana. During wet periods the weathered shale exhibits a sig-nificant decrease in strength, which has led to a number of landslides. In this session several case histories will be presented where drilled shafts have been used to repair and improve the safety of homes and roadways
The Effect of an Instructional Reading Program Based on the Successful Readers’ Strategies on Jordanian EFL Eleventh Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension
The study investigated the effect of a reading instructional program based on the strategies of successful readers on Jordanian secondary stage students’ reading comprehension in English. The participants of the study were 50 first secondary stage male students who were chosen purposefully from the northwestern badia directorate of education. Based on the results of the pretest, two groups were used: An experimental group which consisted of 26 less successful readers who were taught through the instructional program which was designed by the researchers, and a control group of 24 students who were taught the textbook material. The training lasted for two months during the first semester of the academic year 2013-2014.The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference at 14/m:t>">  = 0.05 between the two mean scores of the experimental and control groups in the post reading test in favor of the experimental group due to the teaching strategy. In light of the findings, the researchers presented some recommendations to English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers and the Jordanian Ministry of Education. Key words: English as a foreign language, Reading comprehension, Reading strategies, Successful reader
Case History S.R. 237 in Perry County, Indiana
Four generalized types of landslides will be discussed during this presentation: high bluff peeloff, groundwater blowout, deep-seated, and shallow colluvial. The presentation will include case histories that describe approaches for repairing slopes of these types and combinations of these types of landslides, for improving the stability of slopes that could be affected by landslides, and for reducing the hazard from debris flows to highways and properties below landslides
MSE Retaining Walls Design and Construction Issues
MSE walls are robust with redundancy in terms of con- nection, reinforcement strength, length requirements, and external stability requirements. However, a host of performance issues can occur when they are not de- signed or built properly. This presentation will highlight certain issues that should be considered during the design and construction of MSE walls
Lateral Deformation and Associated Settlement Resulting From Embankment Loading of Soft Clay and Silt Deposits

MSE Walls Retrofit Design and Construction
Presenters will share the INDOT MSE wall retrofit contracting approach, design, and construction for existing MSE walls that showed signs of significant premature distresses
Mechanisms and Mitigation of Highway Landslide Collapse in Indiana
Four generalized types of landslides will be discussed during this presentation: high bluff peeloff, groundwater blowout, deep-seated, and shallow colluvial. The presentation will include case histories that describe approaches for repairing slopes of these types and combinations of these types of landslides, for improving the stability of slopes that could be affected by landslides, and for reducing the hazard from debris flows to highways and properties below landslides
