The Cosmic Radio Dipole: Estimators and Frequency Dependence
The Cosmic Radio Dipole is of fundamental interest to cosmology. Recent
studies revealed open questions about the nature of the observed Cosmic Radio
Dipole. We use simulated source count maps to test a linear and a quadratic
estimator for its possible biases in the estimated dipole amplitude with
respect to the masking procedure. We find a superiority of the quadratic
estimator, which is then used to analyse the TGSS-ADR1, WENSS, SUMSS, and NVSS
radio source catalogues, spreading over a decade of frequencies. The same
masking strategy is applied to all four surveys to produce comparable results.
In order to address the differences in the observed dipole amplitudes, we
cross-match the two surveys located at both ends of the analysed frequency
range. For the linear estimator, we identify a general bias in the estimated
dipole directions. The positional offsets of the quadratic estimator to the CMB
dipole for skies with simulated sources is found to be below one degree
and the absolute accuracy of the estimated dipole amplitudes is better than
. For the four radio source catalogues, we find an increasing dipole
amplitude with decreasing frequency, which is consistent with results from the
literature and results of the cross-matched catalogue. We conclude that for all
analysed surveys, the observed Cosmic Radio Dipole amplitudes exceed the
expectation, derived from the CMB dipole, which can not be explained by a
kinematic dipole alone.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures; version accepted by A&

Bound entangled states fit for robust experimental verification
Preparing and certifying bound entangled states in the laboratory is an
intrinsically hard task, due to both the fact that they typically form narrow
regions in the state space, and that a certificate requires a tomographic
reconstruction of the density matrix. Indeed, the previous experiments that
have reported the preparation of a bound entangled state relied on such
tomographic reconstruction techniques. However, the reliability of these
results crucially depends on the extra assumption of an unbiased
reconstruction. We propose an alternative method for certifying the bound
entangled character of a quantum state that leads to a rigorous claim within a
desired statistical significance, while bypassing a full reconstruction of the
state. The method is comprised by a search for bound entangled states that are
robust for experimental verification, and a hypothesis test tailored for the
detection of bound entanglement that is naturally equipped with a measure of
statistical significance. We apply our method to families of states of and systems, and find that the experimental certification of
bound entangled states is well within reach.Comment: Accepted version in Quantu
Perspective: A stirring role for metabolism in cells
Based on recent findings indicating that metabolism might be governed by a limit on the rate at which cells can dissipate Gibbs energy, in this Perspective, we propose a new mechanism of how metabolic activity could globally regulate biomolecular processes in a cell. Specifically, we postulate that Gibbs energy released in metabolic reactions is used to perform work, allowing enzymes to selfâpropel or to break free from supramolecular structures. This catalysisâinduced enzyme movement will result in increased intracellular motion, which in turn can compromise biomolecular functions. Once the increased intracellular motion has a detrimental effect on regulatory mechanisms, this will establish a feedback mechanism on metabolic activity, and result in the observed thermodynamic limit. While this proposed explanation for the identified upper rate limit on cellular Gibbs energy dissipation rate awaits experimental validation, it offers an intriguing perspective of how metabolic activity can globally affect biomolecular functions and will hopefully spark new research
Predicting Soil Respiration from Plant Productivity (NDVI) in a Sub-Arctic Tundra Ecosystem
Soils represent the largest store of carbon in the biosphere with soils at high latitudes containing twice as much carbon (C) than the atmosphere. High latitude tundra vegetation communities show increases in the relative abundance and cover of deciduous shrubs which may influence net ecosystem exchange of CO2 from this C-rich ecosystem. Monitoring soil respiration (Rs) as a crucial component of the ecosystem carbon balance at regional scales is difficult given the remoteness of these ecosystems and the intensiveness of measurements that is required. Here we use direct measurements of Rs from contrasting tundra plant communities combined with direct measurements of aboveground plant productivity via Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to predict soil respiration across four key vegetation communities in a tundra ecosystem. Soil respiration exhibited a nonlinear relationship with NDVI (y = 0.202e 3.508 x , p < 0.001). Our results further suggest that NDVI and soil temperature can help predict Rs if vegetation type is taken into consideration. We observed, however, that NDVI is not a relevant explanatory variable in the estimation of SOC in a single-study analysis
Circumpolar dataset of Soil Organic Carbon north of treeline derived from ENVISAT ASAR GM, link to GeoTIFF
A new approach for the estimation of soil organic carbon (SOC) pools north of the tree line has been developed based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR; ENVISAT Advanced SAR Global Monitoring mode) data. SOC values are directly determined from backscatter values instead of upscaling using land cover or soil classes. The multi-mode capability of SAR allows application across scales. It can be shown that measurements in C band under frozen conditions represent vegetation and surface structure properties which relate to soil properties, specifically SOC. It is estimated that at least 29 Pg C is stored in the upper 30 cm of soils north of the tree line. This is approximately 25 % less than stocks derived from the soil-map-based Northern Circumpolar Soil Carbon Database (NCSCD). The total stored carbon is underestimated since the established empirical relationship is not valid for peatlands or strongly cryoturbated soils. The approach does, however, provide the first spatially consistent account of soil organic carbon across the Arctic. Furthermore, it could be shown that values obtained from 1 km resolution SAR correspond to accounts based on a high spatial resolution (2 m) land cover map over a study area of about 7 Ă 7 km in NE Siberia. The approach can be also potentially transferred to medium-resolution C-band SAR data such as ENVISAT ASAR Wide Swath with ~120 m resolution but it is in general limited to regions without woody vegetation. Global Monitoring-mode-derived SOC increases with unfrozen period length. This indicates the importance of this parameter for modelling of the spatial distribution of soil organic carbon storage
