Get PDF

Do Urban Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) Represent a Relevant Source of Zoonotic Diseases?

[EN] Urban fauna is defined as animal species that can live in urban environments. Several species, including the western-European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), have now been identified as part of this urban fauna, becoming permanent residents of parks and gardens in different cities across Europe. Due to the importance that this phenomenon represents for zoonotic disease surveillance, several authors have been conducting zoonotic agents’ surveys on hedgehog. The aim of this study is to compare zoonotic diseases’ prevalence in hedgehogs in urban environments with those from more rural areas. A systematic review with meta-analysis of twelve studied of zoonotic diseases’ (in urban and rural areas of Europe) was therefore conducted for this purpose. Fifteen different zoonoses have been assessed in urban environments and six in rural areas. Anaplasma phagocytophilum was the most prevalent zoonotic agent found in urban habitats (96%). Dermatophytosis shows statistically significant differences between locations (p-value < 0.001), with a higher prevalence in urban Poland (55%; n = 182). Our results suggest further research and a standardized monitoring of different hedgehog populations are essential to understanding the epidemiology of several zoonotic pathogens in different habitat types (urban, rural, natural, industrial, etc.) and preventing possible disease outbreaksSIThis work was supported by National Funds from FCT—Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under grant number 2021.04520.BD.

Synthesis of magnetic activated carbon from passion fruit seeds and its application in the adsorption of methylene blue dye / Síntese de carvão ativado magnético de sementes de maracujá e a sua aplicação na adsorção do corante azul de metileno

Brazil is a large producer of passion fruit, approximately 600 thousand tons of this fruit were produced in the year 2019, but about 70% of the mass is considered waste. The waste from this production could be aggregated in the synthesis of activated carbons for the treatment of textile effluents. However, the activated carbons need to be changed periodically and these can be removed from the inserted medium using magnetic fields by incrementing particles sensitive to this field on the surface of the adsorbent reducing the cost of the operation. The present work presents a comparison of 3 different carbons: (i) conventionally activated carbon with NaOH as an activating agent from dried passion fruit seeds at 500 °C, (ii) magnetic field sensitive activated carbon synthesized in the laboratory using FeCl3 6H2O as magnetizing agent at 700 °C and (iii) commercial activated carbon. The three types of carbons were characterized using the analyses of: FTIR, PZC, TGA and nitrogen physisorption. The adsorption tests were performed on the adsorption of methylene in batch. Four kinetic models were evaluated to predict the adsorption kinetics: pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich and Weber-Moris and four adsorption isotherm models: Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Redlich-Peterson. The characterization of the conventional activated carbon presented an adsorbent with a degradation curve by TGA that followed the dry seeds, presenting low concentration of non-volatile material, the FTIR showed in its surface ketone groups and CH2, with a pHPZC on the surface of approximately 5.46, with a microporous surface with 690 m² g-1 of type I for microporous surfaces and shows . The magnetization of this carbon significantly changed the properties on the surface, cation ionic surface; the TGA showed more non-volatile compounds, sensitivity of magnetic field, showing more acidic components on its surface such as hydroxyls and carboxyls and the surface pHPZC is 4.14 and a microporous surface with 501 m² g-1 specific surface area. The kinetic and isothermal tests showed promising, the conventional activated carbon showed a higher adsorption capacity than the commercial one and the magnetic activated carbon showed a similar adsorption capacity as the commercially available. All the adsorbents presented very similar behaviors among them, presenting a kinetics with characteristics of physisorption of a pseudo-first order adsorption and the adsorption isotherms presented a favorable behavior, endothermic and with Langmuir adsorption. Thus, the present work infers in the potential use of magnetic activated carbons in relation to the ones available in the market, with similar performance

The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is a wild ungulate and game species with a broad distribution in Portugal. In Idanha-a-Nova (Castelo Branco) there is a particular interest in studying these populations due to the importance of the hunting industry to the regional economy, and the recognised role of ungulates as reservoirs of infectious agents to livestock and humans. This histopathology survey aimed to compare deer lesions from Idanha-a-Nova (n=16) and Lousã (n=4). Samples from the lung, liver and kidney of animals were collected during the hunting season. The results reveal a high prevalence of parasitic bronchitis (13/20; 65%), especially in Idanha-a-Nova (11/16; 68.8%). Moreover, many animals presented non-purulent nephritis (8/20; 40%). No statistically significant differences were found between regions or genders for any lesion. This survey provides an overview of the health status of the red deer populations in these regions. Further studies are crucial to better know the sanitary situation of these populations and under the One Health perspective, to apply protective measures for animal, hunter and consumer health.

Proliferative Endometrial Lesions Hidden behind the Feline Pyometra

Get PDF
The literature refers to pyometra as the most important pathology in the feline uterus, which is often associated with cystic endometrial disease (cystic endometrial hyperplasia/pyometra complex or CEH-Pyo). The etiology of pyometra is complex and probably multifactorial, but hormonal influences are suggested to play an important role in the pathogenesis. Progestagen-based contraceptives may be risk factors for the CEH-Pyo syndrome, for endometrial adenocarcinoma and also to mammary tumors in this species

AS CARREIRAS NA CONTEMPORANEIDADE: O DISCURSO DE TEÓRICOS SOCIAIS E O QUE PENSAM OS SUJEITOS CONTEMPORÂNEOS

Get PDF
&nbsp

Get PDF
[EN] Wild boars are wild ungulates with a wide distribution in Europe, with a relevant role in wildlife and public health. In Spain, high (and sometimes artificial) densities of wild boars are responsible for several health problems. Regular surveys, with hunters’ collaboration, are crucial to monitor these diseases. Histological analyses were performed for lung, liver, and kidneys from 72 wild boars (58 from Zamora, 16 from Palencia). Lungs were the most affected organs, mainly revealing parasitic pneumonia (34.7%). Hydropic, vacuolar, and other cellular changes (33.3%) and congestion (16.7%) were found in the liver, and only 30.6% of the wild boars presented no alterations in this organ. Regarding the kidney, non-purulent nephritis (22.2%) was the most common lesion. This study gives an overview of the health status of wild boar populations in Castile and León. Other laboratory analyses are needed to obtain definitive diagnoses of these lesions, reach other conclusions, or apply any mitigation strategies to protect animals’ or consumers’ healthSIThis work was supported by National Funds by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the grant 2021.04520.BD. Introduction: Nowadays intestinal parasitic infection remains an important public health trouble in Latin and South America, emphasizing the Amazon region. Furthermore, intestinal parasites have been considered important factors in etiology of nutritional anemia and malnutrition. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the intestinal parasitic infection and its possible association with anemia in people from Amazon communities. Methods: The study was a research in documentary records, descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional, with confirmed cases of parasites infection found in State Hospital of Cacoal-Rondônia, Brazilian Western Amazon. The parameters evaluated were gender, age, race, parasites, hematocrit and hemoglobin. Results: Females where slight higher for the number of cases of parasites occurrence (51%) compared to males (49%) and children had higher parasitic index (43%) followed by adults (37%), teenagers (11%) and seniors (9%). With regards to race, pardos (brown skin color) group was the most affected by the parasites with 69% of cases, followed by caucasians (17%), indians (11%) and blacks (3%). The major parasites diagnosed were Endolimax nana (55%), Giardia lamblia (28%), Entamoeba coli (14%) and Iodamoeba bütschlii (3%). In relation to the association of intestinal parasites and anemia, children had a 60% anemia increase when compared to adults (p <0.05) and the indians increased by 100% anemia when paired against caucasians (p <0.05).Conclusion: Thus, it is suggested that attention should be given to the increase in protozoa parasitic infection prevalence in Amazonian communities and expedite the emergency of improvements in political and sanitation programs of water treatment and waste and sewer management
