    Development of an ultrasonic dry-coupling inspection wheel for Online NDI composite application

Although several solutions have been designed to integrate the use of these couplants and the NDT operations in different stages of component life (from production to in-service operation) its use incre ases the complexity of the process and the cost of the inspection because in some cases special infrastr uctures may become necessary. Some of the research effort developed in the last decades has been a ddressed to reduce the necessity of couplant gel or fluids. In this sense, the development of ultrasonic inspection w heels based on special rubbers with a high degree of humidity has been proposed and is being commercialized nowadays. How ever, its use is not allowed in applications where the condition of completely dry coupling is imperative. Other tools based on air-coupling have been also developed but they mainly operate in through transmission arrange ments and its use is limited to low frequencies. T his work examines a new wheel-based tool which can operate in dry condit ion . It has been developed in the context of the ICARO Project (Innovación en Composites Avanzados y Rear- End Optimizado) to provide a nondestructive inspection solution to be integrated into an Out of Autoclave ( OoA) composite manufacturing process based on electron beam curing technology layer by layer. T he solution requires be able to inspect very thin composite specimens (from 0.5mm) in clean and dry conditions compatibl e with the manufacturing process. T o overcome these conditions, a special inspection wheel prototype has bee n developed that integrates a 5MHz ultrasonic array transducer composed by 128 elements mounted in a particula r wedge. T his aperture operates in pulse-echo and generates an ultrasonic image based on linear scanning beam forming process and a synthetic aperture acquisition procedure known as 2R-SAFT . Inspection results obtained from reference standard of different thic kness are presented. T hese results are compared with conventional immersion UT inspections and show the high potentia l of this inspection wheel for this special applications.Peer reviewe

    La presente tesis recopila y analiza los conocimientos recibidos a lo largo del programa de Maestría en Dirección de Empresa (MBA), mediante su aplicación en una empresa de la ciudad de Arequipa; con el propósito de identificar el problema clave de la empresa, comprender y analizar la información externa e interna de la organización y sostener una propuesta que busque solucionar esta problemática. En tal sentido, el documento toma como fuente de información los datos de la empresa Pro avance. Pro avance es una organización con más de 16 años de trayectoria operando en la ciudad de Arequipa desde el 2003, fundada por sus socios, Sres. Edith Choque y Armando Romero, como un Centro de Educación Técnica Productiva (CETPRO), que brinda los servicios de capacitación y consultoría. Asimismo, la organización cuenta con una inmueble moderno, ubicada en el distrito de Yanahuara y que cumple con los principales protocolos de seguridad que le ha permitido ser reconocida y certificada bajo esta calificación. Del mismo modo, a lo largo de los años, Pro avance ha tratado de adaptarse a la vanguardia de un buen servicio educativo, mediante el uso de la tecnología; sin embargo, como toda pequeña empresa, tiene grandes retos por delante para seguir incrementando su presencia y su crecimiento. Pro avance entiende como desarrollo sostenible el tener un crecimiento económico, social y ambiental, con un nivel de confianza y compromiso con los grupos de interés. Por tal motivo, la compañía monitorea, de manera continua, las directrices de su reporte de sostenibilidad, a fin de identificar sus impactos y encontrar las soluciones o planes de acción para su mitigación. Pro avance participa del programa de negocios competitivos de Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) desarrollando sus reportes conforme a dichos estándares. Por este motivo, este trabajo presenta un nuevo modelo basado en un clúster de servidores con sistema de ficheros distribuido en red y virtualización de sistemas operativos que mejora la utilización de los recursos disponibles.     Two independent epigenetic biomarkers predict survival in neuroblastoma

    Background: Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial pediatric solid tumor with a highly variable clinical course, ranging from spontaneous regression to life-threatening disease. Survival rates for high-risk NB patients remain disappointingly low despite multimodal treatment. Thus, there is an urgent clinical need for additional biomarkers to improve risk stratification, treatment management, and survival rates in children with aggressive NB. Results: Using gene promoter methylation analysis in 48 neuroblastoma tumors with microarray technology, we found a strong association between survival and gene promoter hypermethylation (P = 0.036). Hypermethylation of 70 genes significantly differentiated high-risk survivor patients from those who died during follow-up time. Sixteen genes with relevant roles in cancer biology were further validated in an additional cohort of 83 neuroblastoma tumors by bisulfite pyrosequencing. High promoter methylation rates of these genes were found in patients with metastatic tumors (either stage metastatic (M) or metastatic special (MS)), 18 months or older at first diagnosis, MYCN amplification, relapsed, and dead. Notably, the degree of methylation of retinoblastoma 1 (RB1) and teratocarcinoma-derived growth factor 1 (TDGF1) predicts event-free and overall survival independently of the established risk factors. In addition, low RB1 mRNA expression levels associate with poor prognosis suggesting that promoter methylation could contribute to the transcriptional silencing of this gene in NB. Conclusions: We found a new epigenetic signature predictive for NB patients' outcome: the methylation status of RB1 and TDGF1 associate with poorer survival.     Molecular epidemiology of Giardia, Blastocystis and Cryptosporidium among Indigenous children from the Colombian Amazon basin

    The incidence and prevalence of intestinal parasites in children is most likely due to lack of natural or acquired resistance and differences in behavior and habits closely related to environmental and socioeconomic determinants. The most important protozoa that parasitize humans are Giardia, Entamoeba, Blastocystis, and Cryptosporidium. These parasites present wide intraspecific genetic diversity and subsequently classified into assemblages and subtypes. The Amazon basin is the largest in the world and is the fifth freshwater reserve on the planet. Contradictorily, people living in these areas (Indigenous populations) have poor quality of life, which favors the infection of diseases of fecal-oral transmission. The aim of this work was to unravel the molecular epidemiology of Giardia, Blastocystis and Cryptosporidium across four communities (Puerto Nariño, San Juan del Soco, Villa Andrea and Nuevo Paraíso). We obtained 284 fecal samples from children under 15 years old that were analyzed by direct microscopy (261 samples) and Real Time PCR (qPCR) (284 samples). The positive samples for these protozoa were further characterized by several molecular markers to depict assemblages and subtypes. We observed a frequency of Giardia infection by microscopy of 23.7% (62 samples) and by qPCR of 64.8% (184 samples); for Blastocystis by microscopy of 35.2% (92 samples) and by qPCR of 88.7% (252 samples) and for Cryptosporidium only 1.9% (5 samples) were positive by microscopy and qPCR 1.8% (5 samples). Regarding the Giardia assemblages, using the glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) marker we observed AI, BIII and BIV assemblages and when using triose phosphate isomerase (tpi) we observed assemblages AI, AII, BIII and BIV. In contrast, Blastocystis STs detected were 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. Lastly, the species C. viatorum, C. hominis (with the subtypes IdA19 and IaA12R8) and C. parvum (with the subtype IIcA5G3c) were identified. We observed a high profile of zoonotic transmission regarding the Giardia assemblages and Blastocystis STs/alleles. Also, we highlight the elevated frequency of infection by these two protozoans suggesting an active transmission in the area.     Trends in asthma hospitalizations among adults in Spain: Analysis of hospital discharge data from 2011 to 2020

    Aims: To analyze trends in asthma hospitalizations in patients over 15 years of age in Spain. To identify possible changes in incidence, demographic characteristics, clinical conditions, and outcomes. Methods: We conducted an observational retrospective epidemiological study using the Spanish National Hospital Discharge Database and included all patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of asthma from 2011 to 2020. Results: A total of 1,102,923 patients were hospitalized with a code for asthma in any diagnostic position; of these, 153,749 (13.94%) had asthma coded as the primary diagnosis (asthma exacerbation). The number of patients with an asthma exacerbation decreased over time, from 15,356 in 2011 to 8804 in 2020. In-hospital mortality (IHM) remained low (around 1.5%) and stable in this subgroup of patients. When the diagnosis of asthma appeared in any diagnostic position, hospitalizations increased for all ages and sexes. In this case, a significant change was observed for IHM, which increased from 3.27% in 2011–12 to 4.36% in 2019–20 (p < 0.001). The main risk factors for IHM in both cases were age over 65 years, need for mechanical ventilation, and associated diagnoses of pneumonia, heart disease, or atrial fibrillation. In contrast, obesity was a predictor of lower mortality. Conclusion: Our results suggest a decline in the incidence of hospitalizations for asthma exacerbations from 2011 to 2020. In contrast, the number of patients with asthma in any diagnostic position increased progressively, as did mortality, probably owing to an increase in comorbidities in a gradually ageing population
